    The ACTIVE, or Advanced Control Technology for Integrated Vehicles program was NASA's effort to built even advanced F-15, and the outcome was the F-15 STOL/MTD, it was a modified F-15 designed to take off from short and damaged runways, because in the event of a war with Soviet Union, airstrips would be among the first military targets, so the U.S. Air Force wanted to ensure they could still get fighters in the air. These efforts were further reinforced by the introduction of thrust vectoring technology, and then canards were added in front of F-15's traditional wings in 1988. This Program was a huge success, while a standard F-15 Eagle needed more than 7,500 feet of clear runway to land, the F-15 STOL/MTD could do it in just 1,650 feet, 78% less than standard runway. In 1993, a new F-15 active program was hoping to use the fighter as a testbed to see what capabilities the United States could develop for further generations of fighter jets. NASA also introduced the Pratt & Whitney pitch yaw balance beam nozzles, with a full 360-degree arc in which the nozzles could redirect outflow. The F-15 used for these programs was ultimately retired in January of 2009.

    This F-15 was a supermaneuverability project, the short takeoff was more of a bonus. But after that they realized that supermaneuverability in high aoa maneuvers would leave the aircraft at very low to no speed so they canceled it and especially because most fights now happen in bvr so they focused on that.

    • @CS_Mango
      @CS_Mango 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I mean sure. Bvr was the main focus. But having the option to perform such maneuvers may prove life saving. After all airplanes that are very agile but loose speed quickly have been used before like the mirage or the kfir, or as it is now the eurofighter rafale and gripen.

      It was really nothing more than a test bed for technologies featured on 5th gen fighters, and with 5th gen fighters replacing aging 4th gens, there is no need to develop this further as opposed to developing the 5th gen fighters further.

    Not to replace the F 22 but to supplement the F 22 because of its price tag
