    I’m a former US Navy P-3 ground pounder. Lots of times I’d help send a plane off towards the end of my shift and come back 12 hours later and see the same plane arrive back (with a list of pilot write ups!).
    Great plane but could be a maintenance hog at times.
    Got to fly across the Pacific three times as a passenger on P-3’s. Also several other shorter flights. Shutting down an engine was standard operating procedure. The good pilots could shut an engine down and no one would notice.
    Flying on a turboprop across the Pacific isn’t something I want to experience again. It took forever!
    Also flew from Moffett Field to Hawaii on one for a “good deal” trip. A jet takes four and a half to five hours. A P-3, eight hours!

      @@DardanellesBy108 Thank you for your service! I was a former P-3 Flight Engineer. We would shut down the #1 to save gas because it was the only engine without an electrical generator. The P-3 actually could be configured to have enough fuel range to fly non-stop across the pacific but only if you flew it below the amount of fuel required to return safely home. IF you attempted to take that bird across the pond non-stop, you could end up with a mechanical failure mid way that resulted in not having enough fuel make it home or to your destination. It's not that it couldn't be done, but that it wasn't worth the risk of ditching at sea.

    I was an AE (aircraft electrician) on the P3 Orion for over 10 years. Flying P3's on station with two engines shut down is normal and is called loiter configuration. Those big T-56 Alison engines are overpowered for the airframe and the aircraft can get by with only one if need be. Before being configured for Naval anti submarine warfare, they were the Lokheed Electra passenger aircraft. First flight was December 6, 1956. Two Electras crashed ending their use in civil aviation but they had a long and proud life in the U.S. Navy.

    The shutting down of engines for loiter operations was all determined by several factors, gross weight, outside air temperature, operating altitude, icing conditions and mission requirements. It was getting paid to travel the world and have the time of one's life. I travelled everywhere and stayed mostly in 4 to 5 star hotels and was treated like a king.
      Prior to that I was an ENLISTED Marine. So I know how tough and shitty military life can be. But I always claim the Marine Corps even though flying for USAF was a picnic once I was operational and flying the line and knew what I was doing. Ah shit, relative to being a Marine, it was a picnic during Air Force OTS and flight training. Survival School was no picnic, but compared to Marine Corps Recruit Training, anything, even SERE Training was a picnic.
      When people say, "Thank you for your service", I tell them I had the time of my life. My uncle went war in in WWII. I went to "Whore" around the world and the Herky Bird was my coach.

    I had the pleasure at the Moffet Field Naval Airstation Air show. Watching as an F-16 and a P-3 Orion performed a simultaneous climb out from a full stop to 10,000 feet. Both aircraft reached 10,000 at the same time. I am still impressed with this performance. This was a fantastic aircraft for the U.S. Navy.
    I worked next door at the Frank Azuna AFB for IBM as a Series 1 Engineer.

      This brings to mind a story seen in 1990s book about Air National Guard: Atlantic Coast F-16s would intercept Soviet Tu-something Bears just idling up and down the US East Coast and after some time flying in formation taking photos and exchanging gestures the Bear pilots would firewall their throttles, the turbines would belch smoke, and those big props would bite enough air to accelerate at such a rate the jets had to select afterburner for a bit to catch up.

    My dad said most of the time they would run on 2 props when they got to their AO. When the Navy decided to go with the P-8 jet engine aircraft for sub hunting he would tell me, "Yeah you can get there faster but how are you supposed to conserve fuel while dropping buoys looking for Russians?" That's the advantage of turbo-props to jet engines, staying on target longer at lower speeds. VP-69 West Coast boys didn't run away in desert storm like East coast crews when the computer went out. They could navigate at night with a sexton. Whoever is still flying the Orion over the Tri-Cities, WA you make me smile every time I watch you do the low and slow circles

      You actually can fly reasonable distances without engines even in non-gliding airplanes, granted for a shorter time than gliders. Small planes often entirely shut off their engines when landing because there just isn’t enough drag to slow down the plane enough without it. Since this particular plane is designed for low power flights I wouldn’t be surprised if they could get a very long glide time out of it.

      @@oakleyswoodworking5748 I mean, they land with them. Not fly. My Cessna’s prop often isn’t even spinning if I land in a headwind. But glide distance IS a thing, it’s one of the specs you specify when coming up with a new plane design. Often the FAA won’t cert your experimental if it can’t glide without power for x distance from y height, it’s why there are no private VTOL planes. They drop outta the sky like rocks, even helicopters autorotate when the engine goes off so you can still crash land em with some degree of safety.
      Are they meant to glide indefinitely off thermals like a glider? No. Are they meant to be able to controlled land 5 miles away on a runway with no engine power from 3k ft? Yeah. They are.

    The Fairey Gannet was a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm anti-sub warfare plane that flew from carriers. It had two turboprop engines connected to a gear box with a single shaft double prop. It would use both props for taking off and then when airborne and cruising would shut down one engine and prop. It could thus stay in the air for a good 6 hours

    • @jeanpotato7532
      @jeanpotato7532 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They rotate the blades so that they face the direction of the flight and therefore dont rotate. The might also lock the propeller axis so that it just stands still (I'm not sure though)

    • @taktuscat4250
      @taktuscat4250 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Because that would be drag. A spinning propeller has a surface area the same of a flat disc similar to propeller's radius. So if you're conserving fuel you don't want to create unnecessary drag slowing you down and drag ofc increases fuel consumption so since most props are variable pitch they just do that. Side note: if your multi engine aircraft engine failed you need to stop it from windmilling for the same reason

Which we had to did in a similar situation one time. But we climbed up to 10,000 feet AGL and lit off the APU so we could restart one of the other engines if that last engine craps out, we could restart another engine before we reached ground level. the P3 has the glide ratio only slightly getter than a brick!
    We only did 18 hours airborne. And we had to stop at Iwakuni for JP5 to get back home.

    This is the same reason SOCOM is running trials for a new turboprop overwatch aircraft instead of relying on jet tech. You can make decisions on the fuel flow rate and engine operations for a prop that you simply can't with a jet, which needs a constant, precise amount of fuel. These new overwatch aircraft (which I think will be the Wily, I've seen so many Wily flights out of Eglin the last couple months) will need the ability to deploy troops, munitions, and provide ISR support as well as general overwatch, which means they need to be able to linger far longer than their initial flight plan called for.

    And another fun fact - Even though the Electra no longer serves passenger flights, it's still used as a cargo hauler. The last few airworthy examples can be found in Canada, where Buffalo Airlines still operates the type for cargo that their DC3 and C46 fleets can't carry.
