- Thomas and Friends Take N Play die cast toys have had a makeover. This video examines the differences between a 2009 Thomas Tank Vs a 2012 Thomas Tank.
What I discovered is amazing, so many design differences going on under the boiler. What's most important is by pulling apart both these Thomas toys we see why they are so safe for children to play with. The new 2012 model is almost impossible to disassemble due to some very clever toy design work. Its something you will not find in the knock off Dark Side fail toys I often examine on my channel.

Totally agree with you. The Tomy build is so much better and more reliable than Fisher Price. When you have such a large collection, like we both do, the difference really shows itself.
I'm hoping the series gets back to the core of good and evil characters, with everyone being friendly it's a tad too sweet to take in. Get Cranky back to being really Cranky, Diesel 10 back to being a evil steamies chaser and get Thomas off the I'm a really useful engine line and have him causing trouble again.
It's interesting to note that the 2012 versions (with those holed in axles and whatnot), when they roll on a flat surface, they still feel smooth and even if you leave them in the dust for months or years, they still roll finely in comparison to the earlier models.
I will be doing a video about the new TnP Devious Diesel, in fact I have quite a few of that character in my collection. The changes to him are very curious indeed, seems the dark edge to characters is being washed away. The other very curious one is the new Hector, it's also a very different beast in a very different way.
I feel the new 2012 toy is a safer toy but the Hot Wheels styled axles and wheels is I feel a backward step...but hey I'm only a video guy...what would I know
I'm hearing you and agree. The change which has me wondering is the axle's..Your basically got Hot Wheels there now. The older design seemed so tough and robust.
I'm pretty sure no one would expect so many changes in such a small toy. Has the sniff of a brand new factory in Thailand pumping out the little blue guy in massive numbers.

Sadly you have totally missed the point of this video, I illustrate that these toys are basically impossible for children to pull apart and thats a big part of toy safety. My core curiosity is why is there so many changes going on and are we better off for it.
There is no law against curiosity, unless you have a problem with that as well.
Yes, I agree it does look very machine made... maybe it's time for a Thomas / Matrix cross over
There is one vote for the non botox look, the thing I found amazing was the amount of change which has gone on. That 2012 Thomas is like a battle tank to pull apart.
It will be interesting to see which face pulls the votes, much of the changes are hidden away inside where you can no longer go.

Thats not a problem at all. I know there are some really special Thomas fans out there and I do my best to be as polite to them as I can. If I don't have the time to do that, well I'm not worthy of being here.
I prefer the 2009 version... Just like the design and face better, not to mention the axels which were far more superior to the 2012 version. I was amazed at how many changes there were. I wonder what causes a toy company to change production techniques on a specific toy. Especially changes that are so drastic such as these. Excellent video Leo, I felt like I learned something from this disassembling video.
Excellent video, Leo! Personally I like the 2009 model better, not only because it comes apart easier, but because it doesn't have that unsightly red bit of plastic that sticks out of the back to hold on the chasis like on the 2012 model. Also, the 2012 model's face is flatter and it looks strange from the side, but the 2009 model's face is more livley and much cheerier.

It took me a long time to come around to liking the Take N Play's, it wasn't until I saw how much my son enjoys them I realized what a classic and robust toy train it was. He's very happy with it and thats possibly all that matters

What I should do is expose how different the old 2002 Take Along design is. It's really easy to open up and pull apart. The main thing I had to remove was the large die cast spike inside the model. Considering thats not there in the new 2012 design that aspect of a gandy dancer conversion is easier. The main thing to get right is the hole in the running plate plastic and the wheel assembly area.

correct, the line artwork is also different sizes, sometimes 0.5mm different widths
I almost walked away from youtube, i'll give it a few more months but the problems I have are many. If it's not copyright, it's personal attacks or someone telling me I'm ripping off toy brands. When I started here on youtube it was a much nicer place, well before the hate trolls started to control the fate of those trying to making good content..maybe I should sell out and accept paid placement in my videos like all the mega tubers do..it seems thats the golden path these days
I personally prefer the 2012 one. The face seems to suit its era and those ERTL style wheels look brilliant. However, I can definitely see the appeal in the 2009 version, especially for those who customise their toys

Yes, the wheels and axle design is very different, I wonder how much punishment those little axles can take
I still like the 2009 versions, but I like the designs on the wheels on the 2012 versions. I only have Luke and Stafford for the 2012 versions so far, hopefully looking forward to the others as well.
I agree with you that this new design is for a speed build almost snap together style in the factory, the plastic dome is a mystery...why?
Maybe now we have ERTL's axles the next change will bring back the classic ERTL body...now that would be an improvement...I'm thinking of calling the 2012 Thomas Hot Wheels Thomas due to the axle design.
I prefer the old face personally. It reminds me of the show back when they had the models, what with the wider grin and the full, rounded eyes. The new one conforms to the rest of the CG stuff, and feels a bit more natural as far as the shape goes, but it doesn't share the same appeal for me.
Also, when you were taking out the screws for the '09 Thomas, I got a strange image of Top Hat from Tugs, with the head bobbing up and down. :P

To gain access to the 2009 running board is only a two screw job if you were to do a really nice paint job, the 2012 model required you to drill out the plastic rivets, not sure how you could hold it all together again unless you pumped Thomas with glue

Lets all hope that some time in the future TOMY have another chance to do the main Thomas toys...I now see from my collection these are the best Thomas toys in so many ways.

Don't you see loads of these knock off's in Singapore?..that place used to be copy watch capital of the world. Boy I miss the street food there. I used to go there to help out with the Singapore National Day shows back in the 90's
I too have to say I love the older face since I loved watching the old Thomas series as a kid (When they had the models instead of CG). Not sure what happened to all of my Thomases I had growing up, but I had a fair amount of the Thomas wooden trains.

I am so split on these 2 Thomas'. the new one's face has a real shabby paint job on it were as the old one has a nice clean look. i don't like the new wheels and I am one who like to take toys apart only if they can be put back together, so for me - 2009 TnP. BTW i just bought the Thomas pillow pet :D, $50, :O, but i feel it was worth it. great video Leo, it's great to have you making videos again

Look after those ERTL's they are the Thomas toys which in time will pull the big money

I really like the 2009 model better, kids can't take it apart because it' needs the proper tools, but also when you DO need to take it apart, you can still take it apart
On the weekend I saw some classic old USA spud guns in the toy store..I bought a few just in case these guns are banned here in no guns Oz
Now I can keep a spud gun beside my bed at night to keep my family safe....thats all I have

The artwork line dimensions on both models is also different. It's a completely new Thomas in every way.
I'm not sure, but I have enough toys to make another 4 episodes. Over the last few months there seems to have been a flood of new rip off products I'm sad to report

Yes I agree with you on he painted face on the 2012, the more I think about it the 2012 model might come from a totally robotic assembly line, there is not a screw to do up on it. The axle change is really curious indeed, thats almost a total step back in time to ERTL designs

Sometimes it takes time to understand whats good or bad about a change, maybe in a few years we will see how those axles hold up against some tough play. As far as I knew the 2009 Thomas was virtually indestructable

I removed the 4 jars which held my Kinder Surprise collection from the 80's and added a whole new bunch of stuff.
Those Toy Story toys were collected via the Newspapers here, not sure if the rest of the world ever saw them

I like the newer thomas, the face is more modest and suits the character a bit more for me.. I dont know why it just buys it for me.
All in all Leo, I much prefer the 2009 design, purely because of the customisation you get with it.
Every Take N Play I'm getting in the future will all be converted to 00/HO gauge and the faces will be removed and replaced. To put it simply the 2009 one allows me to do that, but the 2012 one doesn't.
Also to me the 2009 one just looks more appealing, there's something about the 2012 one that looks a bit cheap. Probably just the wheels and the paint job.

I was in a polite was asked to change...long story. For those who had wallpaper backgrounds they will not like it. Possibly having a site which scales across all viewing devices is clever but I feel the largest scale of this is does not work as all you see is a sea of thumbnails. The split subscriber / non subscriber view is also interesting.
Put it this way it will be a forced move for all so we all have to suck it and see

I grew up with the older ones. They are works of art on what Thomas The Tank Engine used to be, along with a Percy or Thomas eral.

I like the 2009 model more. The only thing I prefer from the 2012 model is the more TV series accurate face which is a thing that got dropped somewhere along the line (no pun intended) Of course neither has the white running board though ^^

In the step by step changeover process I had youtube have a download of a template banner. Once you see that and how certain sections are for different viewing devices it makes sense, you need some mild photoshop skills to pull it off
I hear many people are pissed off the wall paper is gone and they feel their channel no longer feels personalized anymore yet youtube tell you this new UI is gives a more personalized feel...hmmmm, it all sounds like spin to me to sell potatoes to potato farmers

Gotta say I think that overall, the older model is vastly superior in all but the face. I see why they've changed it (Mattel like to do things in house) but I think it's daft myself.
The track that was originally created by Learning Curve was more like the wooden train tracks or large puzzle pieces. They then created adapters to make it fit the thinner more detailed looking rails. However the thicker puzzle piece track was more versatile and could also be used with wooden Thomas trains as well. It was also easier to use on carpet and stayed together better. FP took the track to a more fold away system that seems to take away from being able to customize the track layout.

Interesting, I think the main reason for the change is the way the 2012 one is put together looks more simple so the new factory gets an easier time of it. I do however hate the way the dome doesn't seem to be attach to the engine. Here's a question leo does the new design have any impact on how it performs on play sets maybe you can do another video about that?

besides when i was 3 years old I had some good times with the take along thomas
As someone who grew up with ertl thomas (and took them apart as I got older) I can honestly say I NEVER had a problem with what I called the "pinhead axle" even though the wheels are floating and the axels are spindly they never snapped or the wheels broke off

For my customs I need to take apart some of my trains but the 2009 and the cgi models just decide to walk all over me because their too difficult to come apart

well,those knock off"s are very expensive.And times have changed we have only 2 food streets.One located at Chinatown and one near Raffles Place MRT(Mass Rapid Transit=6/3 car eletric train which does not run on overhead wires but eletricity come from the third rail).Now we have Food Centers everywhere here.
It is also very rare to find Hornby trains here too.
We have a shop which sells all items for SGD$2 called daiso,it is japanese store and this is where I always get my toys and stuffs.
