Shergar was going quite well with four furlongs to go but found nothing when asked to pick up, quite a sad ending both on the racecourse and of the racecourse for such a talented and lovely horse.
@@beverleymorris167 He was, a true reminder that horse aren't machines and no such thing as a certainty, no matter how good they are they are always capable of running pounds (stones in this case) below their best.
Commentator, didnt notice Shergars poor start coming out of the stalls. Tbf Michael stoute has always maintained it was his worst mistake running Shergar in the st. Leger , he wanted a prep race for the Arc de Triomphe, and the agha Khan suggested the Leger as another classic to win. They watered the course all week, stoute felt very ominous and wished he could have pulled Shergar out but it was just too late. There had been rumours before Hand that Shergar wasnt working well on the gallops at home, altho stoute denied that . I think the layers would have won a lot betting against Shergar if they could have, the whole scenario just felt wrong that day. I doubt Shergar would have won any race by that stage of the Season, obviously way past his best, because they could find nothing wrong with the horse after many tests following his heavy defeat, he wasnt entered in the Arc, instead being sent to stud, where shares were held over his stud fees, what followed is so horrendous it's still makes people upset and angry after four decades......Shergar a true racing legend ❤
@@KevinMunday-oh6xq I just don't think that Stoute would have chanced Shergar if he had been pleasing them on the gallops, I think he had just peaked and even in the King George there were signs that he was slightly regressing.
@@kevinmunday5782 Maybe a mistake in not detecting all was not well with the horse, but don't believe it was the distance that was the mistake. The horse was beaten 3f from the post. The horse was not the same as he was at Epsom in June, that's for sure. Whatever the reason, and we shall never know, but the poor creature never deserved what lay in store for him next. Awful ending, so very sad.

Beautiful horse. Stunning visual wins but yes he beat nothing, like Frankel who beat nothing in most races and barely managed to beat the good ones in Nathaniel and Cirrus. His best win was v St Nicholas Abbey, but that's 1 good performance. Frankels rating is the biggest joke ever based on beating noone, guineas display was most overrated race in history where he barely beat horses that were closing quick at the line who never won races again.
Great ride by Joe Mercer

Beat too far out to be true form

Michael stoute knew shergar could run 1mile6 it wasn't the ground

Shergar was obviously over the top by the st. Leger, he was beaten a long way out
True
He has always said Running Shergar in the St leger; was the biggest mistake he ever made in his training career tho.
