Hey Guys I love the way you guy broke down "The Diary" I'm N.O. Joe. I also produced and mixed the entire Ridin Dirty UGK with Pimp C Album and several other southern classics The entire Geto Boys "Til death do us part" album where I introduced the b3 Organs and live instrumentation southern hip hop and created a unique sound. Devin The Dude is the guy singing on the the hook of "Hand of the Dead Body" with Ice Cube. One of the most talented artist to come out of Rap A Lot started out in the group The Odd Squad then became a member of Facemob. One of the most underrated rappers of all time, his music is more comedic and blues oriented as far as content goes.

I always enjoy your reactions but this was probably the greatest one of them all. To see how you both found out about the genius of Scarface with all his facetts plus the fantastic productions by the legends Mike Dean, N.O. Joe and Uncle Eddie, your enthusiasm for nearly every song...the sharp analysis of the tracks by Pops + his honest opinions and the love for details by Kay. Like someone else said...enjoy your Rap-ALot Records journey, cause there's so many fantastic albums released on that label. You will like it for sure...even though Scarface might be untopable, but the label roster had such a variety and always backed up by the greatest productions by Mike Dean, N.O. Joe and more. Check out 5th Ward Boyz, Blac Monks & Mr. 3-2, 5th Ward Juvenilez, Ganksta Nip, Devin The Dude & Oddsquad, DMG, A-G-2-A-Kee, Menace Clan, Seagram, Facemob, Too Much Trouble's 2nd album (the first one will be too rough & brutal for you I guess), Big Mike, Poppa LQ, the Do or Die debut album and of course Bushwick Bill "The Phantom Of The Rapra" 58:36

I’m extremely curious to see how your father reacted to this!!
Your father’s appreciation for hip hop leaves me speechless. I don’t think a lot of people realize hip hop is a newer form of music that was not accepted when it first came out especially gangster rap like Scarface. CD’s of artists like Scarface, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, NWA, etc. were openly destroyed in the streets, banned from radio stations, with politicians even speaking out against these artists.
White Sheet is one of my favorites. Only problem with this album is it’s to short.

    Hello!
I have been watching you two for awhile and truly enjoy your reactions and discussion. I wanted to weigh in on the discussion around 12:40 when you start analyzing the last part of the song. This is one of my favorite songs! In my circle (limited, I know) and interpretation, the song is a pretty directly a revenge song for someone who killed his best friend. I do agree that he is grappling with a bit of guilt about what has to happen, but the emotion is pure rage. They don't trust to the police to care or follow up so he is doing it himself. Street justice. ("Since you like to kill, then your ass has got fry, but ain't no police, therefore your ass has to die...") He can't sleep at night because he can't rest until he has completed his mission to avenge this friend. That is what haunts him. ("I see your picture in my mind and my hand shakes.") Shakes with sadness at the memory of his friend. It also shakes at the image of the man who killed his friend still in the land of the living. He has anger and anticipation to finish the job. That the expectations of his crew and what his OGs (elders) told him to do. ("And we real with this shit, so we stay true, since we bang, then we do what OGs say do."
That is the interpretation I know from conversations I have had about this song. I've also heard it MANY times! Fun fact this will be mentioned 90,000x but this is heavily featured in cult classic movie Office Space!
Happy Friday and keep it going 🙂

Great interpretation of the song, I always thought his albums were therapeutic in a sense. Having to deal with living in those types of neighborhoods and what all comes with it. The way he's always talking about his mental state, I'm sure he opened a few eyes with his lyrics.

Since you seem to know what you’re talking about, do you think No Tears and Jesse James are part of the same story? Because in No Tears he talks about what he wants to do to his target, and in the song after that he IMMEDIATELY talks about how he snuck up on his target

I recommend all albums. And Geto boy albums. I been a fan since the 8th grade. I'm 47 now. But the made album and the fix and the last two deeply rooted and the lost files. And a album called work ethic and he put a group out called the product he's all over it and they are lyricsly just as good as he. Please have a Scarface month any questions about Scarface or Houston rap trust me I'm the go to guy. I listen to Scarface daily since 1987. And pos right about hearing ice cube in his delivery he said himself he gets a from ice cube he said he cheated and got some from every MC and packaged it up. He is legally marked manic depressive

  • @JamilynParks
    @JamilynParks 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Great reaction to a great classic album. There are just a few little things I wanted to point out.
I always felt like there was a subtle narrative to this album. Notice how continuous it is? Each song sort of goes right into the next one, even if connected by an interlude or skit... they often feel like a continuation of the "scene" before. Some almost feel like the next moment, while others are the next day or week. Y'know, like diary entries.
Also, on "Never Seen A Man Cry", I always interpreted that chorus to mean, similarly to your interpretation, that as a product of a tough environment filled with machismo, that he had never witness a man shedding tears until he saw a man die, possibly by his own hand. However, I take it as though HE is the one crying. He never knew such grief and remorse until he witnessed, or possibly committed murder. Also, if you go back to the Tiny Desk, he shares a little anecdote about how he and Mike Dean were working on the song, and his cousin had come to visit the studio. I think the voices at the beginning are from them talking in the studio.
I'm looking forward to you guys doing Isaac Hayes, and PLEASE do some Devin The Dude. You loved him on this album, and I think you'd like some of his other work. He is a brilliant, yet largely unsung rapper/singer who has collaborated with many of the greats from the South and West.

I could swear that the sound pattern of "Goin Down" is inspired by the song "99 Luftballons" by the german singer Nena

Mystikal Murder 2… your dad would love that production! It’s a song about the night his sister was murdered. You’ll need the lyrics available for sure lol

The Intro and Outro are almost like his interpretation of some of the instrumentals from the movie Scarface with Al Pacino

I seen a man die is one of the best rap acts ever. Listened to it when I was young and when i saw my Uncle die in Hospice, later I left and put random spotify up and this song came up first. Chillin!

Great album to review. If you are going to do scarface album reviews then Mr Scarface Is Back is by far his best album and worth the review.

Ice Cube and Scarface are my numbers 1 and 2 of my top five MCs, so yes, their collaboration on this album is legendary to me. Hand of the Dead Body is a staple of any Hip Hop playlist, mix CD, etc that I make, for myself or others. Absolutely classic album. Y'all should check out the album just before this one "The World is Yours". It's a little more light hearted (as much as a Scarface album could be considered light hearted, so, not as dark). Another classic, in my opinion, and it has another song that is a staple on my playlists "Let Me Roll".

This album is the story of a murder told from the act itself, then explains every stage like the funeral of the deceased, the arrest and trial of the perpetrator, him getting out and living the rest of his life and so on. It's pretty much explaining the cycle of gang violence.
