Indeed. You have to take the time into context. There are some incredibly talented guitarists out now and tech has come an unbelievable way, but at the time this was unheard of and blew my fuggin mind. Rip Eddie, hope you're enjoying yourself wherever you are
He was the level. The level that any man or woman wishes that they were at. I do not see it being surpassed in the near or distant future. Eddie was definitely one of a kind.
In reality he’s not as good as Hendrix or Wes Montgomery as a guitarist but he did change guitar forever and to me that is a task that only happens very few times. Just as violin changed with Paganini and piano with Lzist guitar was changed by Eddie Van Halen.
You picked up on what makes Eddie's solos so attractive: unlike other "rock god" types who seem to take themselves so seriously, Eddie always seems to have so much fun...he looks to the audience and seems to say, "Hey, check this out," rips a lick, and then laughs like a little kid at what he's done. So awesome.
He also plainly put a lot of thought into the composition -- there is a variety of styles artfully and theatrically compiled into a fifteen minute musical journey. Truly remarkable.
VH prime time sure wish brothers didn’t ruined their legacy by being control freaks and booted the red rocker diamond dave and picked Gary for lead ooh then there’s Wolfe who maybe son but ain’t micheal Anthony a shame they couldn’t keep making music together
I have been a VH fan since the first album in 78' and you are so right. He really loves what he does and it sure seems like he likes to watch all our faces while he drops these insane licks on his guitar. I dont think we will see another guitarist like Eddie for a long time. He built his own guitar to make the sounds that he wanted. Oh and I am a Van Halen and Van Hagar FAN!! Not a fan of Cherone Album nor was I impressed when Dave came back. His voice is shot and Eddie tuned back down a 1/2 step for him as he did in the early days.
It's difficult to find anything on the internet where Eddie isn't laughing and smiling. He was truly a King with an exceptional character. I've been listening to VH since 1979 and it was never dull. Eddie also made his own guitars as well. It's been said before Eric Clapton made his guitar gently weep, but Eddie made his scream bloody murder! R.I.P. EVH you are sorely missed.
I read a quote"this weekend that said Eddie wanted his guitar to sound like it was dying and he was bringing it back to life lol I'm a long time fan but Ive never thought of it that way
"It's common knowledge that Eddie made a deal with the devil. Nobody knows what Eddie got, but the devil got guitar lessons." I saw this on another reaction video and it's the best thing I've ever read about Eddie.

Tacobell5150, correct. He picked out the parts of the guitar himself and put it together himself if memory serves me right. He also, I believe, pioneered "potting" of pick-ups.
that's because "designers" didn't construct his guitar (5150, which is now in the Smithsonian)...HE built it! BTW...5150 is the police code for "criminally insane"...yep, that explains it!
r.i.p. Eddie Van Halen. On the Mt. Rushmore of guitar legends. Seeing reaction videos makes me relive the first time hearing Van Halen. One of a kind, now and forever. You will be missed.
Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Prince, Slash, Yngwie Malmsteen, David Gilmore, all great guitar players...then over here in a different category, you have Eddie Van Halen, cause there's not a word in the English fuckin dictionary that describes what he could do with a guitar. RIP Eddie., you were one of a kind
This whole album needs a review. One of the best debut albums in rock. "Ain't talkin' bout love" "Running with Devil" Every tune to be honest...lol. And who are the 257 people that gave a thumbs down??? Some Purist that have to have it all clean? I'd love to see anyone of you even hold a candle to Eddie or this AMAZING piece of music genius. He invented those pull offs and hammer ons. "Guitar God"
Like so many others I found this after learning that Eddie Van Halen has passed. I truly appreciate your awesome take on his incredible, godlike talent. Seeing him play was marvelous and hearing you appreciate it was somehow even better. Thank you.
Except for Vito Bratta from White lion. And oddly enough, Vito could pass for Eddie's twin brother. Must be a genetic component to that level of play! Watch enough Vito Bratta and you might even say that he pulled off EVH play cleaner and more melodically.
RIP Ed . . . . never will there be another creative & innovative, talented humble soul like EVH . . . . Thank You Jamal . . . all the best & stay well . . .
I admit Eddie is technically the best ever but David Gilmour makes a guitar sing which makes him my favorite. But Eddie's technique is better then Gilmour's. Eddie works a guitar but Gilmour makes it sing.
You know, you made me realize something. I was analyzing the solo the entire time, thinking about how much I liked it or not, then you were talking about how much fun he was having. Then I was like, yeah, isn’t that what music is all about?
One of my favorite reactions you have ever done Jamel... it was the first I viewed and have been watching for almost a year now. The joy Eddie brought on stage and watching you embrace the ensuing insanity was enough for me to watch again. RIP Eddie Stank face 2000!
When Can Halen first started, Eddie shattered many ear drums and teeth. Jaws everywhere dropped. And air guitarists were so blown away, that they didn't know what to do. Phenomenal guitarist. Self taught. Most back in the day practiced their asses off to hone their skills. That's why all the greatest guitarists were from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Most modern guitarists nowadays don't even come close.
Man, I LOVE THIS CHANNEL! One of the great things about music: Differences, judgment and assumptions that are force-fed to so many by our upbringing and/or especially the media, all disappear. And even if only for a moment, all who are willing to listen share a common universal appreciation for what they're listening to and in turn, for each other!
I was privileged (fortunate) enough to see EVH perform for the first time EVER with Sammy Hagar at Farm Aid (1) in Champaign, Illinois on September 15, 1985. He walked out on stage and performed his "cathedral" solo for the first time. A fantastic way to end a rainy, cold day!
R.I.P to a giant! There is every single guitar player in the history of music, then there's eddy van halen, he really was way way out there in his own league, a grand master of guitar, basically eddy invented modern day guitar hero style. All the top guitar players on the planet tried to emulate him, and that alone is the greatest level of respect from the biggest names in music. Love and respect to eddy and his family, you are irreplaceable and the world will miss you. ❤❤👏👏👏👏
My dad introduced me and my brothers to VH at ages 6 and 4. Every Van Halen song is a reach back into my childhood. We were lucky enough to see VH in 2007 at the Greensboro Coliseum. My face was as melted as yours is in this vid. The world lost a true visionary in the last month. God rest Eddie. He brought more joy to at least two generations of our family. God bless you for featuring Eddie on your channel.
Think about the fact that 1, this man started a band with his brother and gave it their last name. 2, neither of them is the lead singer 3, the lead singer said he it’s favorite part of the show because he gets to chill. How many frontmen you know that like to chill to the tune of their guitarist outshining them for 16 whole ass minutes?! This man will always be a legend! RIP Eddie and thank you so very much for sharing your gift and humility with us 💕💕💕
The GOAT of Rock and Roll, there will never be another, we will never see another Michael Jordan or another Stevie Ray Vaughn or Jimi Hendrix and we will certainly never see another EVH!! He did things nobody could have imagined

"Is he about to melt my face off"... well, he just might! You must remember though, this song is from the mid-late 70's... if you listened to it then... than, YES! This established Eddie as a ROCK GOD!
Today's generation doesn't know. There was nothing back then. No cells, no pc's. Most everyone only had three channels on the TV. Eddie rocked the world. It was amazing. When you went to bed you saw his face and dreamt that you yourself would be like Eddie someday, if you could just motivate yourself hard enough to practice.
I love that you appreciate this. This came out when I was 16, and I watched this VHS a hundred times. I thought I was a decent guitarist, but I heard Eddie and thought, Okay study...because I aint never gonna be like Eddie.
He was speechless. It's very hard to describe how good Eddie is. Seeing them live is an incredible experience. Eddie was an innovator who was in a league of his own. Rest In Peace, Eddie Van Halen.
So glad you got a taste of the legend, EVH, Jamel! Thanks for your stunned reaction, cause that's what his playing did, leave many pf us stunned! RIP Eddie!
I agree. The guitar world pushed him aside for his unique style. But guess what? Here we are, 30-40 years later. Where are the other guitarists? Crickets. Yet Eddie is still talked about. He was huge in the 80's. As time goes by this man will take his rightful place as the guitar god that he was.
The techniques, fret tapping etc, had been around a very long time. Django, Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, many more, but it was on acoustic guitar. Spanish and Classical guitar used the sweep picking and fret tapping. Eddie, a classically trained musician, took it and applied to electric guitar, right when so many great effects were being added to get the rock sound. His genius is creative composition and how he used those techniques, along with his own new techniques is what changed everything.
@@wolf762x51 absolutely!! Eddie added a ferocious side that really fueled today's rock / metal. Those 1st several albums with DLR. That band was the total unique package back then... so many "stink face" moments! ;)

There is one word though, paradigm. He was the model(paradigm) every guitarist wanted to be!
The crazy thing is that's not even trying for him - he's just out there having fun!!!
He was the last of great "feeling " players. He wasn't a Juilliard virtuoso. He was ALL FEELING
@@dionysusincarnate5713 Hold on, David Gilmour is still alive.
EVH RIP. Yes, besides the guitar making you smile, his smile and joy playing it makes you smile.
Man I am so so sorry I missed this guy live!! R.I.P. Mr Edward Van Halen!! ❤
Sad news to report. Eddie Van Halen died today at 65. lost his battle with cancer! Such a nice person too. He will be missed
You've got it exactly right, Jamel -- this guy reinvented how an electric guitar can be played. Great vid, great reaction!
wrong, Hendrix did that, he brought it along.
Ed always had that 'boyish' smile on his face like he's just having fun.
Having fun and getting paid! Best gig in the world!
This whole album needs a review. One of the best debut albums in rock.
"Ain't talkin' bout love"
"Running with Devil"
Every tune to be honest...lol.
And who are the 257 people that gave a thumbs down??? Some Purist that have to have it all clean?
I'd love to see anyone of you even hold a candle to Eddie or this AMAZING piece of music genius.
He invented those pull offs and hammer ons.
"Guitar God"
We lost Eddie Van Halen this morning. Reinvented rock guitar. We won't see another musician like him again.
Seen them in 82 and 84 when David Lee Roth was still with them, they were fantastic. Eddie was and is Unbelieveable. Great Live Shows!!!
Like so many others I found this after learning that Eddie Van Halen has passed. I truly appreciate your awesome take on his incredible, godlike talent. Seeing him play was marvelous and hearing you appreciate it was somehow even better. Thank you.
Eddie ruined an entire generation of rock guitarists who tried to emulate his style and couldn't pull it off.
I know I'm 2 months out...BUT the same can be said about Cliff Burton. Greatest bassist in my mind EVER.
@@twobitbandit7603 I cannot disagree. Cliff set a high bar for every bassist to come after him.
Can't blame him for that.
I was wondering Robert burns if you were one of those guitarist? I too tried to emulate lol but failed miserably
Except for Vito Bratta from White lion. And oddly enough, Vito could pass for Eddie's twin brother. Must be a genetic component to that level of play! Watch enough Vito Bratta and you might even say that he pulled off EVH play cleaner and more melodically.
RIP Ed . . . . never will there be another creative & innovative, talented humble soul like EVH . . . . Thank You Jamal . . . all the best & stay well . . .
What makes this solo of Eddie's epic is he's mixed in Classical composers into guitar lics and riffs. It's not just random lics.
I admit Eddie is technically the best ever but David Gilmour makes a guitar sing which makes him my favorite. But Eddie's technique is better then Gilmour's. Eddie works a guitar but Gilmour makes it sing.
As an old man I love watching your reactions to the music I love
You know, you made me realize something. I was analyzing the solo the entire time, thinking about how much I liked it or not, then you were talking about how much fun he was having. Then I was like, yeah, isn’t that what music is all about?
One of my favorite reactions you have ever done Jamel... it was the first I viewed and have been watching for almost a year now. The joy Eddie brought on stage and watching you embrace the ensuing insanity was enough for me to watch again. RIP Eddie Stank face 2000!
Bet that guitar had to go smoke a cigarette after that.
the guitar was smoking a cigarette through the whole solo... Eddie gave it one in the beginning. (but yeah yeah i know what you meant)
Yep..seen them 5 times..He's a genius...Guitar gets so hot..it lites his cigs for him.
.
Didn't you see that he was sharing his cigarette with the guitar?
I hope that guitar was at lest 18.
that's why he gave it one part way through
In the movie Back to the future, this is what Marty forced his father George to listen in his bed in 1955 with his walkman.
I’d forgotten- you’re so right!
The whole time I'm watching that I'm thinking BTTF
THANK YOU 💗
If i dont ask Loraine to the dance then Darth vader will come down from the planet Falcon and melt my brain
Check out kid named Billy Strings. He's bluegrass, but, dude, that boy can play. He lives up to the name. Dust in a Baggie is just awesome.
Ummm he DID practice his ass off.
May Eddie Van Halen rest in peace. He just passed away today.
That's why I'm here too
Been watching his footage since. RIP EDDIE!
RIP
We keep losing too many legends!
2020 SUCKED RIP ED 🙏😢😪😔
I've always loved the looks on Eddie's face when he gets done of each set.
It’s great to see someone enjoying what they do for a career
Me too♡♡♡
This is a mix of several of his album solos with some extra for the live show. Is this going to melt my face off?. Yes, yes it is.
🤣
Eddie Van Halen raised the bar to a level back then that guitar players since then can only dream of achieving.
I've heard his licks a million times, but to see in person is mind-blowing
Thank you for the wonder in your voice and the respect in your words. This was good to watch on this sad day.
2, neither of them is the lead singer
3, the lead singer said he it’s favorite part of the show because he gets to chill. How many frontmen you know that like to chill to the tune of their guitarist outshining them for 16 whole ass minutes?!
This man will always be a legend! RIP Eddie and thank you so very much for sharing your gift and humility with us 💕💕💕
In fact it was David Lee Roth's idea to name the band Van Halen. He thought it was a great name for a band. He was so right!
The GOAT of Rock and Roll, there will never be another, we will never see another Michael Jordan or another Stevie Ray Vaughn or Jimi Hendrix and we will certainly never see another EVH!! He did things nobody could have imagined
That’s the Big 3 right there Night Moves! Rock on!
Eddie was a genius. There arent any words to adequately describe his talent. We have lost another great musician. Heartbreaking 💔
Not just his playing, but your reaction brought a smile to my face. His smile was infectious. Thank you for this.
You have witnessed the greatest of all time. THE GOAT. He raised the bar on guitar playing and took it with him.
It’s between Eddie and Jimi Hendrix for who’s number 1
When Eddie Van Halen came out every guitar player in the world had to stop what they were doing and go practice.
Except Jimmy Page.
Jimmy Page was all done by then. He hasn't played a new lick in 50 years.
Guitar Ocd seems he was playing new stuff for some time since 1970: www.samash.com/spotlight/jimmy-page-after-led-zeppelin/
Oh I forgot I'm radioactive.
Guitar Ocd He did a bit more than that.
Eddie & his brother Alex (drummer) were such a force behind the music of the late 70's into the 80's.
Dutch bro’s
Mr. Jamel, I'm 4yrs late, but you sir are a gem. As a Rush head and pre Sammy VH fan it was so cool to see you watch a legend. RIP Ed. Thank you sir for bringing another smile to my 1963 face. They don't come too often anymore. Love you dude. And YES came before Rush.
I've never seen anyone derive more pleasure from playing an instrument like a god than Eddie Van Halen in his prime.
We’d never heard anything quite like it. I’m just waiting for You Really Got Me Now to kick in!!
I love that you appreciate this. This came out when I was 16, and I watched this VHS a hundred times. I thought I was a decent guitarist, but I heard Eddie and thought, Okay study...because I aint never gonna be like Eddie.
I was fortunate enough to see this solo live at another venue (Blossom Music Center)
What an other worldly solo.
He created his own guitars too. RIP the world lost one of the good ones.
According to Eddie's brother Alex - "Eddie is from another planet."
Alex is probably from another planet of his own with his drumming.
I love his smile. Simply the best there ever was. Rest In Peace in Rock n' Roll Heaven, Eddie. 1955-October 6, 2020.
Hold up! You a niner/dodger fan!? That's a new one on me! Go Giants! BTW love your channel hehehe
Face=melted.
RIP EVH, greatest to ever touch a guitar.
09:12 in... Dat face, and "This man is a god".
As someone who was a young teen in the 80s, bruh, now you know our feel.
Been fortunate enough to get to see Eddie 3 times. Nothing like seeing him live
Jamal...loved your reaction! Ed was an amazing musician! Thank you for the video. All of us fans of VH needed it.
You're wrong man sorry, MC Hammer wore Eddie Van Halen pants.
Yeah!.... Like 10 years Prior.
Oh, yeah! Eddie was rocking parachute pants lo-o-o-ong before MC Hammer even started thinking about doing music.
Eddie wore them first. This is 86. Hammer didn't wear that shit till bout 90
That's true!
I girl I knew back in high school 1981 with no ass was the first.
It's amazing using instruments to make music. All genres have their specific talents, but actually PLAYING music is what makes it so great. RIP Ed.
RIP Eddie!
Mozart of the guitar, theyll never be another like this genuis!
Released in 1978 ,, SO MUCH greatness came out of the 70s ,, EDDIE WAS MAGENIFICENT
"This man is a GOD!" and welcome to our reality, kind sir....
When he says he got goose bumps, I thought, "as you should". Many have tried to copy a version of this solo, but you can tell when EVH does it.
I agree. The guitar world pushed him aside for his unique style. But guess what? Here we are, 30-40 years later. Where are the other guitarists? Crickets. Yet Eddie is still talked about. He was huge in the 80's. As time goes by this man will take his rightful place as the guitar god that he was.
Eddie rocked our world. Everybody knew it, no matter who you were or what you're into. And still does. #lproperlegend. RIP.
Gotta love seeing new age guys beholding the almighty Eddie Van Halen and getting blown to mars and back
Just wow! He was so gifted! Thank you for sharing your reaction. Much respect to you.
It's because he found the Pick of Destiny. Legendary.
VH 1, 1978, totally a game changer. Eddie is a legend that paved the way guitar is played today! Nobody played like that back then.
That band was the total unique package back then... so many "stink face" moments! ;)
Richie Blackmore??
When I watch your reactions to music that has been meaningful in my life. You evoke deep emotions in me. Thanks Jamel. Check out Prince, While my guitar gently weeps...
Not sure why but this is the first time I caught your reaction Jamal. I 💖 how you don't do much talking and let the video describe itself. What a genius Eddie was. It truly was a blessing to hear him playing. Only regret is I never saw him live. Thank you for the video.
