  • The M240 is a US-built version of the Belgian FN MAG, that is one of the most widespread and effective General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs) in the world. Since its introduction in 1957 the FN MAG has dominated the market for Western Block machine guns. It was proposed for the US military. However it was originally rejected in favor of the US-made M60. Ironically 2 decades after the M60 was adopted, it was replaced by a US-built version of the MAG, designated as the M240. It was adopted by the US Army in 1977 and replaced the M73 and M219 machine guns. The M240 has also been adopted by the US Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. It is also used by the Spanish Army. This weapon is manufactured in the USA by a local division of the Fabrique Nationale. Production of the M240 still continues and improved and updated variants continue to emerge. This weapon was used during various military conflicts, including the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The M240 is used by the infantry, and may be mounted as a fixed weapon on tripods, vehicle mounts, helicopters and watercraft.
The M240 has several design attributes of the World War II-era German MG-42, including its trigger mechanisms, quick-change barrel, and spring-loaded dust cover. But much of the weapon was derived from the basic design formula of the venerable Browning Model 1918 BAR. In fact most of the Belgian FN MAG was created by simply inverting the BAR's receiver, so it could be belt-fed from above rather than magazine-fed from below.
The M240 is gas-operated weapon. Barrel is above and the gas regulator. This machine gun fires from an open bolt.
It is a selective fire weapon, but does not have a single shot capability. The fire selector switches between a rate of fire of 750 rpm, 850 rpm, or 950 rpm. However the firing rate is adjusted only when fouling causes sluggish operation of the weapon and there is no time to clean the weapon properly.
A safety is integral to the design, which disables the sear when set to "safe", but it can only be safed when the weapon is cocked.
Ammunition is fed into the upper left side of the weapon by a belt. The M240 accepts linked belts with disintegrating or non-disintegrating links. These belts are typically 50 to 250 rounds in length, typically in boxes or pouches. Sometimes these are attached to the weapon itself. The 50-round belts are the most widely-used, and can be linked end-to-end.
The M240 is bulkier and heavier than contemporary machine guns. However it proved to be a very reliable weapon. Several sources report that the MAG is the most reliable machine gun in the world. For example, during testing in the 1990s, it was able to fire an astonishing 26 000 rounds between failures. This reliability was further confirmed in a 2013 torture test of the M240B, after which there was no loss of accuracy, despite the weapon firing a total of 15 000 rounds at its cyclical rate of fire. By the end of that 2013 test, it had fired more than 32 000 rounds without ill effect. The barrel is rated for 800 rounds fired before replacement, but the M240 has frequently exceeded this requirement. According to some sources this weapon have been able to fire 8 000 rounds out of individual barrels before requiring a replacement, even when the barrels were heated until they glowed red hot. Barrels with advanced lining materials have even longer life ratings, with Stellite-lined barrels claimed to last for 15 000 rounds.
Most of the components of the M240 are interchangeable with the Belgian FN MAG and its derivatives, such as the British L7A1.
This weapon has quick-change barrels. A carrying handle is attached directly to the top of the barrel. It allows the crew to quickly remove an expended barrel while it is still hot, with no need for insulated gloves to handle it.
The M240 has composite buttstock, foregrip and pistol grip. Early versions of the original FN MAG had wooden furniture, while newer models also employ composite materials.
    Hope you enjoy!!

not really, most of the weight comes from old Skool manufacturing. The US has been pushing for weight reduction. the Stock M240B is about 27.6 pounds. The In use M240L has a Titanium receiver, bipod and sight knocking it down to 22.3 pounds of course it costs major money. Barrett Rifles came up with an alternative called the 240LW, they reduced the weight to 20 pounds by changing from riveted construction to forgings.

My first hands on experience of this was a real love/hate scenario. It was December '98 in the Brecon Beacons. New moon, 100% cloud cover in the dead of night, so visibility was zero. It was my first exercise, so like most noobs I was carrying everything including the kitchen sink. There we were moving across a field (I guess it was a field, we could't see sh1t) when the opfor's GPMG opens up on us. We make a 'tactical withdraw from contact' - i.e. we legged it. Until my left foot went down a rabbit (I guess it was a rabbit, we still couldn't see sh1t)) hole and I badly twisted my ankle. It swelled up so much I had to loosen my boot laces and it turned a delightful shade of purple. I was limping for the next three days. After the exercise had finished a few of us were asked if we wanted to use up the last of a GPMG's ammo belt. Of course we agreed. So we merrily squeezed off a burst or so each feeling all manly and chuffed. Then we found out the catch - we then had to strip and clean the bloody thing 😡 To add insult to injury (in my case, literally) we then found out the gun I was tricked into cleaning was the same one that had been shooting at me a few nights previous. Fu€king UOTC man... 😂 a week later I then got my jaw broken in sparing so I had to 'eat' crimbo dinner through a straw. I have had better Christmases 😜

Once i hit the fleet and went to Lejeune NC it got better on the flat easy ground.

Wow lots of info! Good that you do your research. Love watching your videos. In the canadian forces we call it the C6 GPMG back in the early 90s I did my machine gunner course and it weight 42 pounds back then. I believe they have it down in weight now.
I remember a partucular winter night live fire where we fired 2000 rounds of tracers. They where removed in a live fire in summer where the tracers kept starting bush fires where we had to run down range with shovels to fight them. So the range safety officer made us take all of the tracers out. Firing all tracers is a bad idea as the barrel would get hot way too fast and warped. We ruined 2 barrels that night...But wow the fireworks!

It's nice that the US got the message in the end. My childhood friends carried these in the Paras in the late 70s, Pete and Mick were out by 1980 when I started college. Another friend's brother in law was a sergeant on South Georgia when the Argentinians attacked and his people took out an Argentinian helicopter with these and SLRs. They put a hole in a destroyer with a Charlie G too. To be fair the Argentinians showed great restraint in not killing them all at that time, despite their losses. My experience of GPMGs was only at ROF, developing the blank fire projector, and not the one SAAB eventually used... ours was better but we were subcontracted to them. We were heat soak testing the hardware, to do that we were belting up 2500 rounds and firing them in one burst with this and the Chaingun. These never had a stoppage. The chaingun used to break off tiny fragments of its action and get jammed up so you had to take the breach mechanism to pieces and clean out whatever tiny fragment had come off a sharp edge. Not me, our armorer, Steve. The LSW was envisaged as replacing the GMPG while using the shitty 5.56 NATO, it just doesn't do the same job. We didn't have to worry about heat soak on the LSW The generation of LSW I saw was crap, split groups, jamming after a few hundred rounds, bipod falling down and twisting the receiver. We tested live and blank, for accuracy and effect comparison, with the SA80 and Accuracy International AW. The GPMG was built like a hammer, it just kept going with minimal maintenance. The chaingun was unreliable with very careful maintenance at that time.

"The beautiful M-60"-haha! I hope that was sarcasm! I served in the US army in the late 90s. The M-60 was a worn out shot out piece of shit left over from the Vietnam days. The barrel change was awkward since the barrels had the bipods and gas blocks attached to them, but the carry handle was attached to the receiver. I was glad to be assigned the M249 in my unit. We had one M-60 in our platoon that would jam every round or two-it was just worn the fuck out. The army switched over to the M-240B when I was in, and the weapon squads were really happy to be rid of the M-60 once and for all.

I have all these guns but they are deactivated because of the gun law (I actually don't mind it, I can play around with these guns quite safely which is good in my opinion)

I was just thinking it would be dope if you did a video on the MBDA Meteor missile. It's so cool and people don't know much about it. Way cooler than AIM-120D's.
You think you might do one sometime soon?

I much preferred the M240 when retrofitted to our M60A1 to M60A3 tanks as a coax weapon instead of the problematic M219 which gave many stoppages during Gunnery practice.
Thanks for the video and bringing back some interesting memories.
    Overnout.

Interesting factoid, all UK L7 GPMG were made by the British company Manroy Engineering. The MOD decided to cease their contract with Manroy and shift it to Heckler and Koch. All recent UK L7 GPMG are made by H&K. In the meantime Manroy engineering were taken over by FN, the company that developed the MAG that was the basis for the L7 GPMG. Manroy now a subsidary of FN still produce and refurbish Browning M2HB for the British army.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet or maybe it’s just because I’m commenting on this almost a year later but the Marine Corps has used the 240B since the early/mid 2000s. Our 240B’s have just received upgrade packages involving the Lima short barrels with the new vortex pattern flash hiders, collapsible stocks, adjustable bipeds, and newer aluminum M125 tripods (which suck). The M240E6 became the M240L/Lima a while ago in the Army and has all those upgrades including the titanium receiver you mentioned.

I have to say out of the machine guns I have experience with, those being the Mk-43, Mk-48, and M-240B. I prefer the Mk-48 I feel it is a much more versatile weapon for the individual user. That being said they are all very good weapon systems, and it came down to a personal preference. Excellent video thank you for producing it.

The M-240 came out in 1978, and was shipped to our tank Battalions in Germany to replace the awful M-219 coax machine gun.......Amazing improvement, and long over-due........There are approx 16 of these guns on the ATF/NFA register, in private hands.......In 2008, the price of one of these 16 transferable was 80k, now who knows!
