A new “chip war” is emerging, and energy independence is at the heart of it.
The world is facing an energy crisis, and the demand is skyrocketing for semiconductors that more efficiently manage the flow of electricity. This has created a new battleground for chipmakers, as they compete to supply the chips that will power the next generation of energy technologies -- from electric vehicles (EVs) to AI data centers to new energy grid systems.
In this video, we'll take a look at three companies that are at the forefront of this new “chip war”: Onsemi, Monolithic Power Systems, and Albemarle.
Onsemi (ON) is a leading semiconductor manufacturer that specializes in power management, and has a high-growth silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing unit.
Monolithic Power Systems is a high-performance power management company that designs integrated circuits for power conversion.
Albemarle is a leading producer of lithium, not a semiconductor, but a key component in batteries for electric vehicles, energy grid storage, and more top chip applications.
We'll discuss how these companies are developing chips and related technology that will help to make energy usage more efficient, affordable, and sustainable. We'll also explore the risks and opportunities that these companies face as they compete in this new and rapidly growing market.

my favorite semiconductor channel.
Thanks Alex!
One of the Best TH-cam channels. I would love a deep dive on Tesla like this
Thanks!
We find most already have their mind made up on Tesla one way or another, but if enough want another take to help, we'd oblige!
@@chipstockinvestor Tesla is confusing. They love to short it.
@@Carol-cb9yu it's unique, so many loyal fans, and so many rooting for its downfall
Do you two sleep?!?! Putting out all this great content you're going to Heaven for sure! You've earned it!
Thanks Michael, that's high praise! 😇
Am I glad to see a new analysis. Thank you
Thanks Rahul, enjoy!
What a pleasant surprise this morning, early and current. Did the "Tropical Princess" chose Nick's shirt? I like it! I was interested in Sic early this year so own ON, AEHR and ACLS. They were driving down ACLS today so I bought more. I am sure it is very pricy but I listened to the earnings call. Sic is robust and made up for down turn in other products. They expect to do well 3rd quarter and consumer will be back the second half of 2024. The volume in Sic is driving down production costs. The market is subjective. I have a bld stock. They were very proud of -54% in net income and -34% in gross products. The stock rattled around a little and then continued up? Love listening to the earnings call questions. Like it when you share your thoughts.
It was "flamingo Friday"!
ON, AEHR, and ACLS are a great lineup. Lots of pullbacks this week (finally), we did a little shopping too. SiC is the future for power chips. The market never learns. New tech is expensive for two primary reasons: R&D costs need paid for by early adopters, and volume manufacturing hasn't been achieved yet. Opportunity for us.
The market is subjective. Lots of nonsense out there all the time. Your BLD's "awesome" earnings report apparently was way better than well-established, growing, and highly profitable companies that reported this week. Oh well... More updates coming.
The best channel on semis 👍👍👍
Thanks as always for your support Joshua!
Your clips are the best :) almost invest in all stocks you talk about 😅 this stock
Teradyme is my biggest stock i invest . Hope you invest this stock 1 time ❤
Keep up the good work ... can not waith to see nex clip ❤
Hey there, thank you! Glad we can be of help!
Love the content, keep up the great work! I heard on a Joe Rogan podcast with Elon where Elon noted a power shortage in the next year to year and a half due to specifically the lack of Voltage Step-down regulators. I did a quick search on who the market leader is and TXN popped up as the primary in this field but based on your latest review of them they've fallen behind so my question is what's the play? From what I can tell ADI, AVGO, MCHP, QCOM, MPS(they have a smaller margin) are in this industry.
Hey Jason, TXN is absolutely a leader in spite of having all that competition. It's just the sudden surge in Capex spend on those new fabs that has us thinking it's riskier than others for the next couple of years. As far as IDMs (integrated device manufacturers) go, we own ON, AVGO, QCOM, and MCHP. We may take another look in '24 at the power chip space, because ADI and MPS are doing great stuff.
I own both On Semi and STM stocks, that said, in my humble opinion, STM is the leader in SiC tech advancements.
Both are doing well. Depends on how you measure it though. STM had been at it longer and had more SiC revenue, but it appears On us further ahead in internally sourcing its own SiC wafers.
@@chipstockinvestor True, both have internal sourcing of SiC wafers, and it's projected that the percentage of SiC in a each automotive chip will decrease in the next 3-5 years (as confirmed in tesla investor day), this means thier internal sourcing will be a bigger portion of the overall SiC supply (higher margins) and they won't have to source as much from external SiC suppliers (worlfspeed)
Enjoy your videos and recent subscriber. Any thoughts on SITM?
Thanks!
We haven't done a video on SITM and the MEMS market yet. Not a bad little small cap. Did you see our video on small and micro cap stocks? We think it applies to SITM.
@@chipstockinvestor Will do, thanks!
Hi, any thoughts on the joint venture of Qualcomm, NXL, Infineon and Bosch to challenge ARM with an own architectur?
RISC-V is very promising, but it won't be a quick fix. We like the challenge to ARM, though. We'll add it to our queue to cover in a video.
@@chipstockinvestor thanks for your thoughts on this. I‘m adding to Qualcomm and Infineon at the moment and I would love to see a competitor growing, no need to rush. As a German investor it would be great to be able to invest into Bosch but there is no IPO planned in the near future.
what is your opinion on VLN stock?
We haven't covered that one yet, but they have an uphill battle. See our video on how we approach micro- and small-cap stocks.
Guys, 25% of ON's revenues are from China (curious they say Hong Kong and not China). Does that worry you? Why not?
Why are you promoting on semi so much
They are explaining it at 2:00
