    I remember seeing so many TH-cam review videos of this series back in the day. Never heard anything negative, only shock at how well they were set up, how resonant they were, didn't go out of tune and the intonation of every note was just dead on. This does seem to be the transition to the True Historic's like you said. I was lucky enough to get Collector's Choice #18 called the, "Dutchburst". This was evidently the year they were making the switch to hot hide glue. Not sure if mine got the hide glue treatment and the upper pickguard screw isn't recessed like the True Historic's. All I can say is, I have 2 True Historic's and I prefer my Collector's Choice. It's not night and day but I've plugged up my strobe tuner to the Collector's Choice and every note is dead on. Even the first three frets. No compensated nut. It has the original nylon nut. And acoustically, it is noticeably louder than the True Hisoric's. Yes, the action is the same height on all of them.

    This is a very nice sounding guitar. You can hear not only the pickups (nice bite to them) but you can also really enjoy the resonance of the instrument, it's got such a nice full sound and it seems to sustain nicely. It's a case where the guitar makes a significant difference to the end produced sound.

    STP has always been a great oil additive still is. there is a demonstration you can do that shows good of a lubricant it is? take a flat head screw driver and dip the flat head of the screw driver into the the additive. and place that end of the screw driver between your fingers. and try to hold on to the scew driver. and I guarantee you can't hold on it.

  • @Kahuna54
    @Kahuna54 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I like the sound! I’m not usually into the aged guitars, why pay extra for a beat up guitar? Build it to the same specs you want, ie Montrose, but get it looking new! Over the years I have always strived to keep my guitars looking a pristine as I can! However, I like this one, it’s not overly trashed and adding the top coat over the exposed wood is great for it staying like it is supposed to be.

    • @martin-1965
      @martin-1965 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'm with you on this definitely. Normally these over-priced relic'd guitars just seem... well fake as hell. However, when they just have a touch of the passing of time about them (and have not had half the finish sanded off 😂) then I get the attraction.

    • @fairguinevere666
      @fairguinevere666 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@martin-1965 They aren't overpriced IMO, when you buy anything you're paying for time. And relicing takes a whole load of work. Sometimes about as much as it took to make the thing in the first place, because it's extremely hard to automate like you can with every other step. So now, you have a guitar that took as much time to make as a customshop before you relic it, then you throw a whole lot more labor at it and it's gonna get eyewatering quick. I refuse to do it on the guitars I make because I don't like the look, and I don't think it's worth the money, but I see why it costs what it does.

    • @martin-1965
      @martin-1965 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fairguinevere666 Yes, fair point. I was wrong to say "over-priced" and accept the amount of work that goes into recreating the relic'd effect - especially when they are replicating a famous guitar like the "Greeny". I'm also with you that, in most cases, I don't like the look. I don't build them like yourself (much kudos to the craftsmanship and years of experience on your part to do that). I do however repair mine and a few customers and friends guitars in my humble workshop.
      Imho the most important part of the guitar to work on is the neck, and I am happy to reshape, sand, fret level, refret, polish and refinish them until I or my customer/friend is happy with the feel of the neck. I mention this because I can imagine some of the relic'd guitars have amazing necks that feel great in the hand. How the rest of the guitar looks? Well, I like it to look as good as possible and have the best components and build naturally 😎
      So just curious if you would agree and whether that is something you focus on most when building your guitars or not?

    • @fairguinevere666
      @fairguinevere666 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martin-1965 I'd 100% agree with you on all that. All my guitars have stainless steel frets, rolled fretboard edges, are hand carved for those parts you're hands on with, etc. I purchase wood for weight, buy overbuilt hardware to help it last a few decades longer and just be that little bit more stable, etc.
      Reliced necks can actually be 50/50 tho, it's common for them to have a ledge on the edge of the finish which a real vintage doesn't! Which again is part of why I don't like them, for the most part. They take one of the most important parts and make it worse.
      Also, if you are doing all that with existing guitars, you probably could make your own without too much hassle. Especially with something like stewmac's pre slotted fretboards, they save a lot of hassle.

    My 1976 les Paul standard has aging and dings and wear as does my 81 les Paul custom cherry burst but they are my fault. Why would I want to pay a rediculas price for a copy of a guitar that some other fool screwed up

    I love Montrose. I grew up in St. Louis--where rock bands from Canada always e a big following (Rush,Triumph etc.) Cool story and guitar.

    Montrose are Bay Area rock legends! You can’t find a boomer who lived in the area at the time who hasn’t seen them. They and Tower of Power were two of the hardest working bands in the area - ToP is still going strong too.
