Awesome review! 0:56 that's my specific warranty card to my Harvest Gold! I posted that pic of it in the Les Paul forum when I purchased the guitar forever ago. I still have it. 2:55 that's my '83 silverburst with my '81 Harvest Gold. My wife can't believe she's seeing them in the video. Too 😎🤘
I think there would definitely be a market for a reissue of that color with modern paint technology. That's a fantastic instrument Austin. God bless and rock on 🎸😎👍
Your historical knowledge is impressive these days. Thanks for informing us about these awesome guitars. Can’t wait for your museum to come into existence.
This is a classic example of Gibson's fine craftsmanship. Making the front of the headstock match would top everything off perfectly. I love gold tops and this gold burst is a keeper!...Great demo, Austin!
Beautiful guitar...I had a harvest gold Les Paul back in 88...bought it at Mr Music back in Allston, Mass, when I was a student at Berklee...still have the store branded guitar strap they gave me as a gift with the purchase .
This is right. It was TV white because it looked white on TV. An actual white Gibson would have washed out everything around it, you wouldn't even be able to see knobs or pickups on a pre white guitar on black and white tv.
Shoutout to my harvest Goldburst neck at 2:21! It’s my favourite guitar by far and was a cool thing to see it in one of Troglys videos. This guitar was purchased in 2011 in Sydney,Australia by me as id never seen that colour before and I was really curious about it. Mine has flip out tuners and came with posi locks too.
I just bought my first Gibson Les Paul , it’s a 2017 Tribute , only gave $500 for it and it’s in awesome shape. Didn’t have the original soft case they came with but it did come with a Gator hardshell case with pink on the inside along with the silk cover. I’m satisfied with it. But I thought I was coming up with something new , because I was gonna try to get a gold burst custom Les Paul until I googled it and seen they’re a rare color but had already been made. I had seen silver burst but this was the first time I saw gold burst better known as harvest gold. Beautiful guitar in my opinion. 👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️
Hello Austin. You are wrong about the initials being from who did the fret work, Since the 60's Gibson has always made complete fretboards and then glued them on later in the process. You can watch a Gibson made documentry for 1967 that will show this process on youtube.
i have an original 81 les paul custom cherry burst. i bought it used in 91 i replaced all the black plastics with blonde gibson parts i got from gruhn guitars, and put the gold knobs on it. replaced the gibson pickups with dimarzios paf and super distortion. ace frehley style. better guitar looks and sound all round. course i still have all the original parts. mine has the flip out winders as well. love them.
I have a friend who owns a 1983 Gold Les Paul Custom. He bought it new and it’s finish turned green years ago. He played it for years but retired it 20 years ago. He had it routed out for a Kahler tremolo but now wants it restored. Any suggestions as to who could do the work? 🎸🇺🇸
I like my Les Pauls with cream colored plastics but black plastic looks killer on these.. lol I'm commenting on the Trog's guitar (Gibson) channel of which I've finally become a fan.. got over my jealousy issues on wanting all dudes guitfiddles..
What's the 411 on maintaining Gibson Vintage Gold Hardware? - What do you use to clean Gold HW without removing the plating? Jewelry Cleaner - Is there a good shop in the US to restore and electroplate Vintage Gold Guitar HW? Electroplating at home is a pretty easy DIY. Maybe a local Jewelry Repair Shop can do it.
I know I'm really critical about hoarders and everything but I gotta tell you something buddy you are fascinating to listen to because it's cool to listen to somebody that knows all the stuff about these things keep up the great work
I know the orange peel is a flaw, and it's unfortunate that it can't really be played But I really love the way it looks. I wish they could fix it while keeping the color the same.
😊 ❤ Almost as nice sounding as my 1981 Kalamazoo Standard Tobacco Burst Tim Shaw work of art & sound I'll never find another one like it again. It's been in a few Vevo videos & OTHERS. I will Never get rid of it!!! I've had many offers but it's all mine. I will pass it down to my youngest son. It has one of a kind tone. Thanks for this excellent video.
Would be great if Gibson could figure out a way of getting really close to the same finish and do a new Harvest burst line. That metal tin on my Studio won't come out on its own. I loosened the screws and using the actual screws I pulled it out by the holes so I don't do any damage to the surrounding areas.Getting it back in is trickier since it is so tight . And then there is blindly getting the screws where they belong.
George Gruhn told me that in the 1990s he took in a fake Les Paul. At that point he had been selling guitars in Nashville for almost 30 years. If he can take in a fake LP, I think I can safely point out that none of us know everything!
I came here to say this. BUT I saw a documentary with Les and Mary, his black Tuxedo Les Paul disappeared in the black Tuxedo he was wearing and that’s why TV yellow was made. True or not? I don’t know, but it makes sense.
So, in many forms, Gibson has a long history of quality control issues since its inception. What was the biggest issues with the paint jobs? Experimentation with paint, bad preparation, bad nitro? Seems that after many years they’d get better results.
Seeing as you brought up Bill Kelliher I was hoping to hear you bust out some Blood And Thunder. It's also almost the same color as the color Les Paul he's playing in his pictire on Wikipedia.
I was about to say the same thing. On a black and white TV white guitars tended to produce an unpleasant contrast glare, the simple solution to this was to use non-white light colours, such as yellow, pale blue, etc., however on the TV these colours appear white, hence the term TV yellow or TV blue.
That is a beautiful Les Paul and I really like tue finish! A rare piece to be in that kind of shape. You'll be hard pressed to find a nicer example I'm sure. This one sounded great btw!
I think one of these just hit marketplace in my area, I’d love to send you a pic of it to verify. Also a 84 Explorer designer series white with the gold ribbon and early 80s all white V. I need answers trogs how do I send you pics?
A sister of mine - but with much better preserved color. The finish is super fragile - the back of the neck is flaky as hell. But the greenish relic on the top looks super cool on mine. Yours doesn't seem to have the cool flip out tuners but that's about the only difference.
Paint technology was changing rapidly in the late 70's and early 80's, and going from solvent based to acrylics caused headaches not only for guitars, but especially automobiles. Think of how badly and quickly the clear coats disintegrated. Not enough research to begin with, I'd proffer.
It is Harvest Gold. My buddy Stanley bought one new from Rhythm City in Atlanta when it was bran new. I drove him there to get it. I bet he still has it but it is right handed so who cares.
TV yellow is because of black and white tv's. White appeared on the television like you couldn't see it it's hard to explain. They made them TV yellow so you could see them when the player was on television
Awesome review!

great collection - still need to find a silverburst to match my harvest gold one ;)
@@ayeapprove 🤘
Magnificent instrument. That is a phenomenal paint scheme.
I think there would definitely be a market for a reissue of that color with modern paint technology. That's a fantastic instrument Austin. God bless and rock on 🎸😎👍
Ditto. I actually think that its a beautiful burst. I think the original harvest gold is 10x better than Gen 2

Damn, that's one gorgeous LP custom..the color, the body and neck binding is just stunning.
tv yellow isn‘t called that way because of the tv furniture, but because of the way will appear on a 50s black&white tv screen! 😉
This is right. It was TV white because it looked white on TV. An actual white Gibson would have washed out everything around it, you wouldn't even be able to see knobs or pickups on a pre white guitar on black and white tv.
Thank you to Randy Leonard for his information and expertise!
Randy Leonard should be charging his ass for the info
That's one killer looking Les Paul. Great sounding as well..
Good Christmas, that’s a clean 42 year old guitar.
That color is spectacular. Even with the defect.
The clean tone of this one stood out to me in a really nice way. It was closer to a single coil quality than what I would’ve expected.
I think they should call it IRON MAN BURST
Drop-dead gorgeous color. Incredible example!
harvest gold stoves are the best kitchen appliance for the blues.

Fantastic sound on the bridge pickup

Surprise! Turned out to be an ‘82. Looks like those Shaws found a home after all. Cool guitar!
i have an original 81 les paul custom cherry burst. i bought it used in 91 i replaced all the black plastics with blonde gibson parts i got from gruhn guitars, and put the gold knobs on it. replaced the gibson pickups with dimarzios paf and super distortion. ace frehley style. better guitar looks and sound all round. course i still have all the original parts. mine has the flip out winders as well. love them.
I love Les Pauls and I love this show. Makes me want to play my purple widow.
I can definitely appreciate how you switched during the demo section from playing Def Leppard to playing Smash Mouth.
That is stunning! I want a reissue of version 1.
Getting better at the fingerstyle Austin! Thanks for the interesting video on this unique guitar.
Beastly sounding Custom and its the proper weight as well that baby's a winner in my book 👍👏🤘
Couldn’t agree more on the weight!!!
Really interesting story on these! Glad you were able to gather the info on that and thanks for the lesson!

Trogly -- THAT is one beautiful guitar! Then, when you stated to play clean - the tone wasas great as the finish… Congratulations

Those pickups always sound gold. T top and Tim shaw pafs ftw 🙌🏻
You have a bumper crop of every variety albeit mistaken about a “TV finish”. Blue Oyster Cult Harvest Moon. Love this time of year.
That is a stunning finish. I’m usually all about the grain, but I would rock that harvest gold
I know I'm really critical about hoarders and everything but I gotta tell you something buddy you are fascinating to listen to because it's cool to listen to somebody that knows all the stuff about these things keep up the great work
I actually love the orange peel look and great story with it. Keepers for sure in your museum!
I know the orange peel is a flaw, and it's unfortunate that it can't really be played
But I really love the way it looks.
I wish they could fix it while keeping the color the same.
I'd say you made the right call by not swapping out the pups. It's the imperfections that give an instrument character.
Beautiful, even with the orange peel. Why didn’t Austin black light this one? That would have been interesting. Maybe I missed it.
Great sounding guitar
😊 ❤ Almost as nice sounding as my 1981 Kalamazoo Standard Tobacco Burst Tim Shaw work of art & sound I'll never find another one like it again. It's been in a few Vevo videos & OTHERS. I like that a lot. I have always liked a nice Gold Top, this is just a bit cooler than a GT.🤟😎
That's a great looking guitar Troggs

I love how you said, "I did not know everything--YET". As if to imply you know everything now.
George Gruhn told me that in the 1990s he took in a fake Les Paul. At that point he had been selling guitars in Nashville for almost 30 years. If he can take in a fake LP, I think I can safely point out that none of us know everything!
Absolutely fascinating!
Wow Trogly is rockin this Harvest Gold Custom LP! It looks so good they need to reissue this V1 finish minus the Citrus Peel of course.
Despite the orange peel, I would definitely own a Gen 1 Harvest Gold LP! That looks INCREDIBLE! Glad that Mr. Gold sold it back to you.
I had forgotten how much I like the neck pickup on a Custom. It’s a richer tone than on a
Standard.
I think its the most beautiful color they ever made!!
If this was mine I'd fail to resist playing the finish away... Also, cheeky with the smash mouth song there. Love it.
TV yellow isn't because of the color of the actual TV, it's because a white guitar didn't work on black and white TV so they made "TV Yellow"
That's what I was always led to believe, it was to do with the contrast on black&white TVs
Not exactly the same thing, but related:
JFK wore a dark suit for debates as opposed to gray suits to look ‘more pronounced’ on black and white TV.
It's weird it would just not work while being filmed
He speaks the truth
I came here to say this. BUT I saw a documentary with Les and Mary, his black Tuxedo Les Paul disappeared in the black Tuxedo he was wearing and that’s why TV yellow was made. True or not? I don’t know, but it makes sense.

To get that back cover over the pots off I would suggest one or two paint can openers. Safer and real plying required.
Ice bag
You could seal the finish with a clear coat. Cut and buffed it would pop.
just picked up a near mint 81 custom sunburst for 2400...one owner...
not even buckle rash...
now have 79, 81, 83..
im addicted
The TV in TV Yellow is an acronym for transparent varnish not television.
Seeing as you brought up Bill Kelliher I was hoping to hear you bust out some Blood And Thunder. It's also almost the same color as the color Les Paul he's playing in his pictire on Wikipedia.
I think I’m with everyone else, that my understanding was that TV Yellow became a finish because it would look better on black and white TV’s
I was about to say the same thing. On a black and white TV white guitars tended to produce an unpleasant contrast glare, the simple solution to this was to use non-white light colours, such as yellow, pale blue, etc., however on the TV these colours appear white, hence the term TV yellow or TV blue.
So Trogs, how will to address the finish ongoing? Is it better to keep in or out the case?
That is a beautiful Les Paul and I really like tue finish! A rare piece to be in that kind of shape. You'll be hard pressed to find a nicer example I'm sure. This one sounded great btw!
Sounds great, too!
The "TV" finish was promoted because it would show better on primitive B&W TV sets of the era.
Perfect for those who can't decide between a Goldtop and Sunburst!
I think my ' 82 XR2 has that finish. I'll have to check
ROCK ON HARVEST GOLD LES PAUL ROCK ON!
That’s a good burst… I am fussy about them, but the right guitar in the right burst is a beautiful thing.
Love it!!! Been wanting one for years.👍
That is a killer finish
I think one of these just hit marketplace in my area, I’d love to send you a pic of it to verify. Also a 84 Explorer designer series white with the gold ribbon and early 80s all white V. I need answers trogs how do I send you pics?
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL guitar...Gibson should figure out a way to prevent orange peel.
Interpolating "Closer to the Heart" at beginning of playing demo?
A sister of mine - but with much better preserved color. The finish is super fragile - the back of the neck is flaky as hell. But the greenish relic on the top looks super cool on mine.
Yours doesn't seem to have the cool flip out tuners but that's about the only difference.
sounds great
Agreed. I’d buy that for $1.00
I can appreciate the Harvest Burst yet I think it looks super weird...Thanks Trogly !
Sounding sick Trogly!!
Video title says 1981 but serial number is an 82?
I am INTO that orange peel!! Lol. No, that's actually too bad, because I love the finish. Is it museum worthy? I don't think it is
I would change to pickup. Give it some time. I understand why you don’t though
Beautiful! I'd call it! 😊
Paint technology was changing rapidly in the late 70's and early 80's, and going from solvent based to acrylics caused headaches not only for guitars, but especially automobiles. Think of how badly and quickly the clear coats disintegrated. Not enough research to begin with, I'd proffer.
That Harvest Gold is a beautiful finish. Too bad it didn’t hold up better,
I heard TV Yellow was invented to keep white guitars off camera because lighting made them too bright for the cameras.
Exactly. Trogly isn’t as informed as he thinks.
The new viceroy colour is very similar , dont you think?
I like it a lot. Much more than most.
Me encanta!
some dealer is asking 7K for an 81 Harvest gold? pretty good condition, it's an ok price??
I have one myself. A lot more player wear though.
It is Harvest Gold. My buddy Stanley bought one new from Rhythm City in Atlanta when it was bran new. I drove him there to get it. I bet he still has it but it is right handed so who cares.
So that's what it's called. It's a finish that I really like.
Personally I like the original Harvest Gold over gen 2 and Silver Burst!
That is my favorite les paul
Howdy everyone!!!
I got a black 81 lpc everyone who plays it loves it
sweet
TV yellow is because of black and white tv's. White appeared on the television like you couldn't see it it's hard to explain. They made them TV yellow so you could see them when the player was on television
Ha I work at the music store that originally sold it, ABStephens. Small world.
OMG I HAVE NO WORDS
you ought to replace that neck pickup😎
