Great video! I just bought a sky for my daughter’s first car🤫 I’ll be giving it to her as a surprise in 3 weeks. I’m installing a backup camera, lane blind spot sensors and dash cam.
Great job, I'm glad I have a pontiac solstice, it's way easier to get to the radio. I'm definitely doing this once I get it back on the road, currently having ecm/ecu issues. Thanks again for sharing this mod, looking forward to your review on the android audio system.
Okay. Sorry to have bothered you before about mounting the head unit. I should have looked at all the parts in the trim kit before asking for your help. I now realize it's the sides of the trim kit that hold the head unit in place. All of the holes don't quite line up but that's not an issue. Thanks for your trouble. While I have this apart for the radio, I think I'll change out the gauge faces with something easier to see. Cheers!!
@@newyorkrich any news? I can't wait to see if it's a buy or a bye bye! I would like to order my part this winter to be ready as soos as spring show up here in Quebec.
Thank you so much for posting this video! You have no idea how much this means to an old back yard mechanic like me, lol! I didn't have clue on where to begin. I was about to get the wood chisel out and start prying away. That's all that was required with my 02 Windstar. I have an 09 Special Edition Sky with the supposedly upgraded GM sound system. Actually I find the sound great on it but I wanted to put something more modern with GPS so I too got one of these Double D Android units from Amazon. The Hikity model. I'm not expecting the steering wheel controls to work or the volume/speed thing to work either but that's not a big deal. I'm also not expecting the screen to be all that visible when the top is down and the sun is out. Were you able to install the backup camera. I'm not sure if I'll bother. Thanks again!
Hi Lance, thanks for the interest. Yes the screen is fine with the top down, no issues seeing it. The backup camera is working and I will show you the fastest way of running the cable without removing any panels in an upcoming video.
@@newyorkrich I'm interested in seeing that as well. I wish I was down where you are with my car like I usually am at this time of year. I recently had a knee replacement so I'll have to wait until the weather warms up to do all this. I'll subscribe to your channel. I think that way I'm notified when you post a new videos. Looking forward to them.
I bought a 2007 Sky Redline. The guy had replaced the radio with a Pioneer DMH-1770NEX, but he only used ApplePlay. The radio has only static, plus I'm an Android Auto guy. I could get by with just Bluetooth streaming, instead of Android Auto, but I want the AM-FM to work. I suspect the antenna is not connected. I really appreciate this video. Shame one has to do all this just to see if antenna is connected, but oh well. Thanks for the great video, and I welcome any suggestions from anyone. (BTW, the steering wheel controls and backup camera work perfectly-just no radio or Android connection pigtail).
Hi Barry, thanks for watching. If you get the radio out, insert a paperclip in the antenna input, if the static changes or goes away, then your radio is fine and the problem is the antenna cable or antenna. Best of Luck with the Redline!
i did not catch you say if your unit was Monsoon or not and if the wire kit plug and play makes a difference to accommodate Monsoon head unit upgrade. Also have to figured out how to get your steering wheel controls to work?
Can you twist/turn the entire side-view mirror housing (to prevent traffic from hitting it while parked)? I see a line below it which looks like it swivels, but when I slightly try it, it doesn't move. I don't want to force and break it. I can't seem to find the answer online.
Hi, have you ever known of anyone who's been successful in adding a late model head unit in a Saturn? I'd prefer to add a genuine GM product and have my factory buttons work on my steering wheel and also have Bluetooth & GPS functionality. Thanks!
Just a couple of questions. The module for the steering wheel controls. I know you said you couldn't get it to work. The company says it won't work for non amplified units for some reason which I don't have and from the thickness of yours, it doesn't seem to have an amp either? Regarding the steering wheel controls....is it only the up and down volume and station changing feature that is effected? I don't use OnStar so that's not an issue. Thanks, Lance
The data from the head unit varies by manufacturer. The module is programable for many and most radios. Unfortunately, my off-brand unit is not one that the module recognizes. Yes, the volume and search buttons do not work on the steering wheel but the touch screen display is very easy to use.
Is there a different brand that does allow for steering wheel controls to function? I ask because in the video you said the issue was because it was an off-brand.
Hi Ricky. I'm just about to install my new head unit similar to yours. Your step by step dismantling instructions were great! Did you have a special harness to couple to the Sky's harness or did you cut the two connectors off? That being the case, how did you know or figure out which wires were what purpose? Trial and error? Cheers!
Hi Lance, the wire harness pinout can be found on the internet. You can also buy a pigtail that will convert the plug from the wire harness to certain brands of head units. It is important to use the Metra interface to continue to have the warning chimes thru the speakers.
@@newyorkrich Thank you for getting back on this. Your videos is self explanatory but in getting started, I forgot about the harness. I got the interface module and antenna adaptor but forgot the harness. I'll order that part today. Somewhat related to this....have you or anyone you know taken out the gauges or replaced the faces on them? I am switching out my base gauge cluster with a Redline set. I've taken every bolt that I can find on the upper dash but can't get it up out of the way enough to remove the gauges. I'm just about to give up on the idea because I'm afraid I might break the upper dash plastic and there is no one in my area who has ever worked on these cars. Cheers!
Sorry to bother you with this. I unboxed the head unit Christmas morning and also the separate trim piece that fits in the space. The weather outside is frightful so I won't be tackling this until it warms up but I had a couple of concerns you might be able to help me clear up. I had assumed that the head unit would slide into grove on the inside of the trim but what it seems it does is just butt up against the back of the trim opening. Is this correct or is my head unit slightly too large? This is a great video however it shows how to dismantle the dash to get the old radio out but not what you went through on the install of the new unit. For example, how you centered and solidly secured the unit it in the opening before putting the trim piece in place. Thanks, Lance
@@newyorkrich I bought it on Amazon. Called Hikity but there is no name on the unit but the face looks just like yours and I bought the trim piece from the company you suggested and it is especially for a Sky. Cheers
@@newyorkrich I checked and the trim piece I got was not the 95-3305 as the company said it was for Outlook or Vue and the 95-3302 was for the Sky. I don't think it has the tabs that you had to snip off.
Hey bud, nice video. Keep ‘em coming. My question is would you have confidence in a shop or somewhere like Best Buy in doing a job like this without messing up something. I see that it’s a little involved.
Most cars today have some sort of entertainment screen. I can navigate the volume and next track without looking at the screen. But you have a good point, it could be distracting.

Where did you find the metra access ax-gmlan11-swc harness? Couldn’t find the right one on Amazon when I typed it in

Yes, the Metra Interface only works with most major brands. Some off-brands (like mine) will not work.
...if any interior trim components get broken..can you still buy parts for these?...i have an 08 redline with 3475 miles..it's really like new.
Hit or miss, some of the interior parts are shared with other GM models like the Colbalt.

Interface is needed for the steering wheel controls. the rest was hard wired in.

I would go to a independent installation shop, I wouldn't trust any chain with the Sky.
Does the monsoon sound amp work with that head unit ?
Yes.
Does this not mess up the ECU do u need to tune it ?
No issues.
Did you get the rear backup camera to work?
Yes, I routed it without drilling or removing trim.
