The voice acting in this game is incredible! Never I have I felt more invested in a FF storyline and I think that's mostly because how great the voice actors represent the personality of each character.
Balthier really was the "leading man" of this game.
At least he thought he was but the story was about vaan himself the other player,s were a part of the whole thing🤔🙏
@@nancyhoffman4784 actually balthier was supposed to be lead and vaan was a late stage decision, hence why he is not really of importance for the story aside from.. being there
@@HimeBurrito balthier? has always thought of himself as the leading man even if the story itself was about vaan and the people around him🤔
@@nancyhoffman4784 you see things from his perspective but he is not the Protagonist, nor the leader of the group, you just play as him. The Real mc is actually ashe, it's her story. And balthier is literally the leader, withiout him they would have been lost a lot of times. Penelo and vaan just tag along.
But also it's been a while for me, so I don't want to argue.. I just never felt like vaan was really that important for what is happening around him. Ff12 is still my favourite final fantasy tho, so I don't really care xD
@@HimeBurrito No such thing as a main character. Everyone is important.
Balthier is just like the epitome if swag. He's sharp, stylish, quick witted, speaks his mind, has a way with words, all while having a hot tall brown skin bunny girl who also smart, sharp, stylish, and charming. Look at how he's able to cut the tension in the air at 2:01:00, superb writing.
I love his talent for reading people!
Voice acting in this game is so freaking good. Every actor owns their character.
damrigh
Seriously one of the best RPGs, quite different from the other FF. It's mature, political, excellent battle system, very intriguing world, feels fleshed out. The places are always interesting to explore and the world feels big but not overwhelming. I would say that the main disadvantage lies on some characters- they are on the verge of being blant, or just unnecessary for the plot. But, overall a masterpiece.
“Let them watch....I know something of cages.”
Don’t know why, but Basch saying that sentence and walking off made me feel like I inherited some of the resulting badassery. If the story is as I remember, then it won’t be the last time he does this.....
WICHICH PART OF THE VIDEO HE SAID THAT?
@@Delicashilous 1:20:31
@@LaviniaDeMortalium THANKS!!!
Balthier's voice actor is just too good
He's a badass
He just came up with a new recipeh
Well he is the leading man.
Listen like leonardo di caprio sound
@@SergioSource That was Adam Croasdell.
Vayne's speech at the beggining is one of my favorite scenes. Even taking into account that he's a villain and is very theatrical, a good speech it was. And winning the trust of an occupied people by showing respect to the fallen king as well as breaking protocol and even bowing to them.
I disagree with everyone saying that Vaan and Penelo were just acting as spectators for the player. To me, the story of Vaan and Penelo was a story of coming of age and learning to move forward after losing people they loved and creating new friendships and bonds.
The point is their impact on the grand scheme of things was minimal at best. Who's to say the story would even be any different without them?
if that were the case then they should've focused on that even more. Since Vaan was marketed as the main guy of FFXII, yet his moments were barely there as soon as the party head to Tomb Raithwall and onwards.
@@hayley9912 If you paid attention to the game, you would notice that everything would be different without them, the party would never get together, ashe would be dead and Basch would be roting in jail if wasn't for Vaan.
And Vaan didn't have a "minimal" impact at all, for the street rat with no ship he did helped a lot, including helping Ashe mature and not turn into a Nazi
@@hayley9912 I think Vaan's perspective in the first half of the game is important to understanding the overall theme of the story. Vaan's shallow attempts at heroics have direct consequences on the people he cares about, and he later confesses to Ashe that his brash actions were little more than childish escapism while he refused to move on from his brother's death. His prominence in the story dwindles as he learns to move on, which is in direct contrast with Ashe. The Occuria use Ashe's grief to control her, and I think it's only because she's witnessed Vaan's recovery from grief that she chooses not to follow through with the Occuria's plan.
Also, in terms of FFXII as an Role Playing Game, Vaan is a great candidate for party leader. He's sociable, eager to help those in need, and loves the prospect of adventure. Balthier has shown numerous times that he would much rather be left to his own devices and Ashe, driven as she is for revenge, would likely railroad the party through the story.
Penelo, I have a much harder time defending, but I recall early trailers of the game feature a scene with her that was cut from the final product. So your guess is as good as mine as for what might've been.
@@KayderimGameplaysabsolutely. Van and Pelelos roles weren’t as say standout leaders, but without their involvement, theyir actions literally bringing the group together, there would be no story. I think their place is excellent…..through their eyes and actions, we get an into to the world and current situation, their small actions in the beginning give us an intro to fighting (Basch is in jail, he can’t do it)….they are good for the intro work and as a means to bring the whole thing together. Even though young, I find them much more mature than say Tidus or other FF mains who act immature (borderline cringe)..
The voice acting and the feel of the environments in this game are so awesome. It feels like living breathing world.
I have watched this game movie for a hundredth time yet I don't get bored at all, it's like a very long series of novel all in one sitting, not even once it bored me, the best FF story for me ever👌
2:54:00 until 2:56:52 is one of the standout and watershed moments of Final Fantasy as far as cinematography and staging is concerned. I enjoy the intimate scenes and I think they are usually the most telling. This is the first time in an FF game I noticed how movie craft had been put in.
Theres a cutaway to later in the day but it plays like one scene because the same thoughts are still bothering her. They have some POV shots while she is lost in her thoughts and she mistakes Vaan for her husbands ghost. Vaan turns his back to her as he's realising and explaining why he joined in on the journey.
The focus gets pulled to each character as they are having the important thought in the scene. As the conversation turns into how their quest turned out much wider in scope than they initially thought and that he feels "hollow" you get a wide angle shot of the bridge and sky that makes them both appear small in comparison to the wider world.
Goes back in close for Vaan's emotional acceptance and then back to POV shots for both characters when they find some sort of mutual understanding and motivation. Closes on a wide shot again with a pan up that suddenly doesn't feel as lonely as it did previously.
"Your cage may have no bars but it is a cage!".. probably the best line in the game.
what about: the best intention invite the worst kind of trouble 3:56:20
I enjoyed this Final fantasy when i was younger. However, this one has gotten better with time. The story is mature and the side characters and main cast are amazing, yes even Vaan. I appreciate the nostalgia with some tears and laughter to recall some great moments on this trip to Ivalice.
XII, along with X and VII, will always be the most iconic FF games I've played. Thank you for piecing all the cut scenes together, it took me so long to finish the game with all the leveling and side quests I did, I forgot pieces of the main storyline.

3:33:30 is an example of amazing writing. This game is way ahead of its time and audience comprehension to intricacies of a coup. You can see, hear and feel for the characters fleshed out from their interactions.
One of my favorite vg moments of all time 👌 Drace is an extremely underrated character too
Yes! The first time i played this was so long ago but i never forget drace's moan when gabranth killed her :/
I laughed so hard at that scene, it's not that great
@Mr Video Game indeed, the characters don't even know each other
@Mr Video Game that's why Revenant Wings is better to me, much more dialogue and things to freshen up the characters...they don't say that many dumb things tho
I don't get the hate towards this game.
The story and gameplay was top-notch, it's one of the more memorable Final Fantasy games there is.
For me personally, I disliked that the main character and his best friend felt irrelevant in their own game. From what I've played (closer to 10 hours) they really could have been left out entirely. Dialogue also comes across as drab and monotone which makes me feel uninterested. Again I've only played 10 hours so perhaps these issues are addressed later on?
Then there's the combat system which has almost no active abilities at all to keep me engaged unless I"m a magic user. In other FF games I could use all sorts of moves like Jump, Lancet, Cheer, Kick, Dark Attack, etc. In FF12 I'm mainly auto-attacking, using my Quickening or casting spells as a mage. With anyone else my only other option tends to be Steal. Maybe I'm missing something but I just don't understand the fun in combat...
The gambit system opens a lot of possibility in combat against varying enemies, with accessories like nihopalaoa that reverse restorative items, the rare monsters that could be farmed for strong weapons early in the game. Sure the characters aren't as iconic as other FF games, but the mature storyline makes up for it. Vaan is a brat and Ashe is an entitled princess, you're supposed to dislike them at the start of the game, with Basch and Balthier as the voices of reason of the group. The characters are actually well-developed, not just as iconic because of how they were designed.
Dennis I strongly agree with u
I enjoyed the story and characters but hated the gambit system. I only found it useful for grinding battles and doing something else at the same time. This was the FF I found the most boring, combat-wise.
I'm now playing FFXV and absolutely loving it. I'd say it's my favourite FF since VII!! I actually have over 100 hours in already and haven't even completed the main story yet. I have completed every single side quest and almost every Hunt and so now I'm on the final chapter of the game - and then there are plenty more side quests post-game that I'll be looking forward to! :D
Ur cray
Ah, the memories of having this on ps2 with no memory card. Leaving my ps2 on all day and night just so I didn't lose my progess. Making it all the way to a cave that was on the way to Archades...
And coming home one day to find that my ps2 had been turned off... all my progress, gone...
I never did finish this game...
But I'll be damned if I dont know the opening cutscene line by line.
Good times
E E are you sure my friend? Wow and did you like already completed a lot of sidequests and level up and all but gone?
You reallyyy should've gotten a memory card :p

Man, my memory card got corrupted when I was all the way at Giruvegan with 100+ hour counting sides and all. Broke my life. Had some 100 hours on dragon quest 8 too
The writing and voice acting in 12 is S+++. As good as any game.
This is easily my most favorite Final Fantasy game. Like many other FF games and their themes, I love its unique focus on political issues. I would play it again in HD if I have a PS4. :/

I wanted to go to Rozarria, to see what it was like... I guess Ivalice was too big of a world for the PS2.
Havoc Bringer Ivalice actually shows up and gets explored in 3 other FF games. It’s the rare time they used a common world for multiple games. FF XII has a direct sequel on the DS. FF XII Revenant Wings. Also on the DS is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance andFF Tactics A2. Both also set in Ivalice.
I think Ivalice was too big for a DVD

I like Ardyn, I like the architecture, I like the OST, but i don't like the main cast and how the story is written... but it was still fun to play, fun to travel in Eos but the story was not put in the right way... i felt nothing for Luna's death that is supposed to break Noct, I felt no pity or connection with Noctis after this event, I just thought he was acting like a child and no fit to be a king... so i had no strengh to return to it, so i'm still at chap8.
And that's when i met Dissidia in which i met Zenos who intrigued me into playing FFXIV and then met Vayne and Gabranth again (elsewhere than a game cover) and both of them intrigued me and i went to FFXII (i just watch the cutescene because i'm stuck in the Leviathan and wanted to know the end because i have no time to play anymore... and i liked both of them (and even cried for Gabranth at the end when i thought he was still alive but it was Basch beneath the helm))

I remember hating this game as a high school senior. Now at the age of 32, the story and the dialogue is way, wayyyyy better than I remember. It puts 99.5% of JRPGS to shame in that respect.
Could you elaborate on why? I'm playing it rn as my last ff and it feels bad, the group barely interact (u know almost nothing of them). The story is the same story I experienced in millions of other games and it's not handled that well
@@nicogalax their interaction are more plot related than bond related. Sure it is a weakness. But it was the script, writing, conversation that draws in a lot of people. I particularly like how they show the empire, their soldiers, ranks (the judge magister espcially). Compare this to xiii with their paper thin and confusing motivation, this is much better.
@@rivaldiidris1019 oh, 13 motivations are well shown but ok, people are kinda blind
@@nicogalax well it's rather confusing for me especially when they are deciding who is the bad guy on 13. Too much grey area for me. But opinions do differ. Nothing wrong with that
@@rivaldiidris1019 the big bad is obviously Bhunivelze, which needed to be more present in 13-1, same as Caius who didn't even appear lol
Such a freakingly awesome game, that I replay times and times again, with a renewed pleasure everytime! Not many games achieve this, to be compared to Zelda Ocarina of Time for instance. Indeed, one of the greatest games ever made!
2:55:28 People say Vaan had no arc in the story. He DID have an arc and this is proof!
The only scene I liked lol
It was odd to have him point out multiple times that he had no clear goals . I still like him as a character
Vaan's real starting point for his own development started when Balthier gave him reason to think about one, when he took Ashe's ring as compensation. "What is it you want, Vaan? What are you looking for?" at 2:42:05
The Ashe talk is a great point too, where he's really finding what he wants to do / get out of this adventure.
It surprises me how few people caught on to that, so I keep looking for people who did.

One of the best story in FF universe 🔥
I strongly disagree. The cast is filled with forgettable and underused characters and the plot twists feels predictable and uneventful, not to mention the annoyance of Vaan and Penelo who dont belong in the story past the middle of the game. The story did have a lot of potential and extremely interesting conflicts and choices towards the end. The universe is marvellous and the staging in the cutscenes is top notch, not to mention the addictive gameplay and mesmerizing side quests. But in terms of story I'd rather play 6,7 and 9.
The plots strong suit was that it wasn't character driven, it was world driven. The political intrigue is what made it interesting; its like fallout or most western games whereby the writing doesn't rest on the characters and their dramatic circumstances to make it intriguing, but rather the choices that are presented in the world and the nuances in conflicts. The characters are just one of many actors.
Vaan had no purpose and neither did Penelo, that goes without saying. It was really "Basch and Ashe: restoring the kingdom" with the rest being side characters. Balthier and Fran were what side characters tend to be, which is moment in the light but nothing beyond. Despite that Balthier still came off as the lead even though Basch is arguably the lead male. Some touch ups with Balthier and Fran and eliminating Vaan and Penelo and the game would have a solid character cast. Whilst its not a character driven story its still a JRPG and the game still places importance on your characters (your party does have the kingdom's princess, after all). Give Balthier and Fran a more solid reason for sticking around other than being bribed for half the game but not really and the character aspect is stronger and compliments the main story better.
The characters were perfectly fine for me if cloud or squall had taken place of vaan the story would have been too much dark n emo vaan was meant to represent the light heartedness of this game inspite of all the large political struggles.
He was the contrast to ashe.
Had there been any change of characters the story just would not have worked out

People talk about how influenced by Star Wars the characters and story are. But I just realized that Balthier asking for Ashe's ring as payment was eerily the same as DJ asking for Roses necklace in The Last Jedi! So in a weird reversal, Star Wars borrowed a small plot point from Final Fantasy!

Chronologically FFXII event is way before FF:Tactics and between that time there's a Catastrophic event that wiped the old technology of FFXII.
There's a theory about what Ocuria sought to do in FFXII is preventing that Catastrophic event by destroying Archadia, so in the grand scheme of thing the Ocuria was right according to this theory.

Mhm.
The camera angles you could achieve in gameplay were quite suggestive, too. Perfectly centered on key parts.
Thanks for doing this
I loved every single character in this amazing game, but Basch is my absolute favorite 💞
2:24:08 bruh... I just love this dialogue. 😂😂😂
Wish they hadn’t forced Vaan as POV character for marketing. Should have kept it Basch and Ashe like originally planned.
It would have been so good. I think Vaan AND Penelo is a bit too much
Imho, i think vaan is just okay to be the face of ff12, because of the irony that they he and Penelo were the nonvital characters in the story. Yet it was the two of them who brought the vital characters together. If it wasn't for vaan being in the sewers and penelo being kidnapped ashe and balthier would have separated ways in rabanastre and basch might not have redeemed himself. Fran and balthier might have freed basche, but vaan forgiving basche first is vital for his redemption.
But in my remembrance before it was release in ps2 all charscters were equally marketed. It was just vaan running around making him look like the hero in the story, because we were used to having the main character the one we control in the field. But when i started playing the game i immediately realized that all have provided a part in the progress of story and that it's not only vaan who owns the game as every character can be the leader. :)
@@mrskye08 The literary term is "surrogate". Vaan works as a character who doesn't know what's going on; the other characters explain it to him, and vicariously to us.
@@MyNameIsBucket thank you for the new knowledge! i'm currently watching ff13 "the movie" and i realized that what made the story perplexing is that everyone in the party is a surrogate lols. and apparently all the explanations are in the datalog, or in wikipedia 🤣
Vaan and Penelo were always meant to be a POV characters, that's what the developers wanted, Square only mandated that Vaan was made the main character instead. And Ashe wasn't meant to be the protagonist, it was Basch.
Hey! Hey Disney! You watching this? This is Star Wars done right!
4:02:51 rare moment of Basch smiling
Love the final battle against kind-of-Bahamut
I haven't played the game, but watching this feels like I have played it.
Jose Fernandez this is the best i can do since i do not own the game system for it, i do have revenant wings though and i am trying to beat it.
This game is an absolute masterpiece. I don't get why people don't like it. The story, the characters, the gameplay was amazing. I hope they make a ffxii-2 that would be great
Well there was a sequel called Final Fantasy Revenant Wings released on the DS
@@MrSuperman216 I did enjoy it as a teen..😊 Only cause DS was all the rage back then
Balthier is a judge and wise man
I wonder if all the sky ships, sky pirates and names of "Archadia" have any reference to a good ole, non-Squeenix JRPG called Skies of Arcadia/Eternal Arcadia from the 00s...? It was an epic game, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was an intentional homage from the writers.
