Mercedes-Benz is a company often portrayed as being deeply conservative, though in fact, no other manufacturer has such a record of innovation. Today, the brand is bolder, more forward-thinking and younger in feel, attributes very much in evidence in this fourth generation version of its smallest A-Class model. This car's now pitched even more directly against sporty premium compact family hatches like Audi's A3 and BMW's 1 Series thanks to key new driving features, plus sharper looks, extra media connectivity and greater efficiency. There's the option of a saloon body style too.

Background
Want a case study in how to change brand perception? You're looking at it right here with this fourth generation Mercedes A-Class. This car aims to make this famous marque one that more younger buyers could consider.
As before, we're told to regard this A-Class as what the market calls a 'compact premium family hatchback' - in other words, a Focus or Astra-sized car with superior quality and a bit of extra badge equity. It's the kind of very profitable product that all the mainstream makers wish they could sell but which is primarily defined by this car and its two closest competitors, the Audi A3 and BMW's 1 Series. The frumpy first and second generation A-Class contenders didn't really threaten these two rivals in any meaningful way, but this car's MK3 model predecessor really did. With its successor, Mercedes has sharpened up the looks, improved interior space and dialled in a great deal more safety and media connectivity.
Driving Experience
On to engines. In the petrol range, the entry-level A 180 variant is likely to be popular, featuring a 1.4-litre 136hp unit available with either 6-speed manual or 7G-DCT dual-clutch auto transmission. This same engine's offered in the A 200 with 163hp, which manages rest to 62mph (in the manual model) in 8.2s. Next up is the A 250, which uses a 2.0-litre petrol powerplant in a 224hp state of tune, manages rest to 62mph in 6.2s and is only offered with a 7G-DCT auto 'box. Mercedes also offers an A 250e petrol plug-in hybrid variant, which uses a 1.33-litre petrol engine mated to a 75kW electric motor linked to a 15.6kWh battery and offers 44 miles of WLTP-rated electrified driving range.
There are three diesel alternatives, all offered only as automatics. The first is the A 180d, which puts out 116hp and uses the 7G-DCT auto gearbox. Next up is the A 200d which has a 2.0-litre 150hp engine. Beyond that lies the top A 220d, which tunes the same unit up to 190hp. The A 200d and A 220 use an 8G-DCT auto. At the top of the range are the two Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre petrol turbo hot hatch variants. There's the A 35 4MATIC which offers a potent 306hp.
What else do you need to know? Well the suspension is the usual torsion beam rear set-up on most models, but if you go for a variant with 4MATIC AWD, you'll get a more sophisticated multi-link rear set-up. The 'DYNAMIC SELECT' driving modes system is standard, as usual enabling you to tweak steering feel and throttle response. At extra cost, adjustable damping can be added into it. Some of the autonomous driving capability from larger Mercedes models has been built into this one, meaning that, in certain situations, you're a-Class, if appropriately equipped, will effectively be able to drive itself on dual carriageways at cruising speeds.
Design and Build
There's a choice of five-door hatch or saloon body shapes. Either way, from the outside, this fourth generation A-Class delivers a more progressive design with a low bonnet and flat, more angular LED headlamps. The car is visually extended by its now longer wheelbase and a smart character line along the side. The bonnet slopes down more heavily than in the preceding model series, emphasising the more dynamic, upright front. Larger wheel arches housing bigger rims (ranging from 16 to 19 inches) help too, making this A-Class sit more squarely on the road.

That's actually a valid point, there is certainly an 'image' issue (in terms of social media) which holds the channel back from the level of exposure it deserves in my opinion.

From my perspective it may be simply a branding thing, with how things work on you-tube in terms of attracting viewership, having a channel with a more descriptive name may be helpful in attracting viewers in greater number.
Once people actually do get to watch the content, as you have no doubt experienced, feedback is always overwhelmingly positive, my suspicion is that growth is only hampered by not getting those first clicks.
Because of the quality of the content, this channel is close to, if not at the very top, of my list when I want information on any car, I'm sure many others would feel the same if they were tempted to select these videos over the other channels on first glance.

I pick up mine this week. Was going to have a 220 but would of had to wait until June so went for 200 it was in stock, it’s so much quicker than the one I got now. Really responsive. Having it de chromed though

20:22 *Armrest Standard on AMG Line Models and at **20:30** All you need do to open Boot is to wave a leg below that car, very handy if carrying 2 shopping bags, plus 1 button on lid will close boot and lock the car.*
We currently gave a golf gtd which is a great car but pcp is ending soon, I'm now convinced that the a class will be our next car but probably the a250 just for that extra power and the combined mpg sounds very good for that petrol engine.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply it felt premium, it has some bonus features such as the sat nav, climate control, cruise control and heat up seats, all a must. The parking sensors and reverse parking camera makes parallel parks so much easier. It's a nippy car and faster than expected. It's comfortable at the same time as being very efficient, more so than my older Audi A1.

I like the dashboard on the Mercedes- it has bit more advanced technology like front facing camera . I’m looking to get a Audi A3 but still undecided if to go for that or a Mercedes.

It’s a shame 360° surround camera is not available on these anymore. Some markets outside the UK do provide it. Would be good to learn about the sound system range too. Looked like a woofer under the boot floor.

- got ca $6800 discount on the AMG line SE edition w/ advantage package + the environmental bonus I will get ca $3500 back.
- 70km range on electric, that's the most I have seen any hybrid go.
- Had to pick hybrid since I cant get a fast charger installed in my condos garage house. Also my boss told me his FULL EV gives him range anxiety.
- The build quality felt better then the other brands.
Basically I was planning to buy a EV SUV or something bigger around 2025 when new battery tech is suppose to hit the market. But a reckless driver destroyed my car before that, I have to pull the trigger on a car now instead :/
Im hoping the merc will hold its value better than some other cars so I can at least sell it for a decent price and upgrade later.
I’m a little confused with the interior. Some have the dual screen some don’t for the same year. Anyone have the answer to this?
I've only seen ones with two screens. The difference is 7 inches or 8 inches. Or you can go for 7 inches and a 10 inch screen split.

Which all goes to show how the how the cheap affordable non premium (average ' punters' ') makes have so decisively closed the gap in recent years. Still, the badge/brand cache is what is on offer here, and as such, the three star 'memorial brand' will never ever be caught.
When the 'average' makes actually become better than their premium rivals they will inevitably take over 👌

As ever, excellent review - very professional. As for the car, it's okay, but I'm not keen on the back end, and it's likely to be better for perceived quality rather than reliability. I loved the first generation A Class. it was genuinely innovative and interesting - for me, Mercedes have gone backwards since then.

Oh, it's full of great gadgets, for sure. It looks the business too!
Backward? The interior makes the competitor look like horse for God's sake. Sure, I can certainly feel that mercedes doesn't keep the quality up these day. But they certainly are moving forward. And with this A class, they're taking a huge leap.
I don't understand cars anymore. Where's the handbreak and drive mode shift?
Ride quality is improved over previous model but the interior is fancy but only if you don't look too closely. Don't be fooled by the wide screen display across the dashboard and all the fancy controls. A lot seem to be metal effect plastic. Gloss plastic is used far too readily for my liking. Only top spec models look okay with the mood lighting at night. Mercedes have too many creaks, rattles and buzzes on poor surfaces. BMW and Audi are more solid and put together better inside. Mercedes are better when they have wood or grain effect trim with metal controls.
If a Mercedes don't RUST... It will last Forever....
This fascia is like driving with a gaming screen plonked in front of you, The 2021 Qashqai is superior, high tech but still looks like a car interior should.

first let you are talking really fast. Secondly why is speed and acceleration more important the fuel economy which you have not mentioned. I would have thought the economy of the engine will be more important at this point due to the rising prices on fuel in the UK
*Exactly, more about MPG today than MPH. The most efficient are the Diesel variants, and I have achieved 74.3 mpg over a 90 Mile trip. (200CDi) Over a long ski trip when many miles covered in excess of 100mph (Max 143) Near Munich returned over 50 mpg overall.*
I love the entire car except tail light. I wish they had mk7 or Audi tail light on this then it would look awesome

I dont get why it has so cheap suspension system.. its supposed to be a premium car. Even my damn Kia Niro from 2016 has multilink suspension. Mercedes is ripping off customers.

Apart from a very minor Mercedes change, its the same engine as a Dacia Duster, Megane and the Nissans. A good computer yes. You keep saying the same thing. I think this is an infomercial? BTW the massive badge is a clear attempt to differentiate from the crowd, way over priced, you’d have to be very foolish to be fooled by this.
