I genuinely think that because all the people who were into pokemon when they were kids are now getting back into it now that they are 30+ years old and living a life where they can now spend some extra cash on more hobbies. I could be bias in that thinking because that's what happened to me. I started up about 2 months ago, I started with 151 and now I'm doing surging sparks. I'm super hooked now.
I think the investor bros who made money on vivid voltage during the pandemic saw another pikachu chase card and thought they could replicate that hype. Then the FOMO sets in other people and there's your artificial demand.
Any kids that are into Scarlet and Violet era, playing the games, collecting with their 30-35 year old parents....one day they're likely going to fall into the same position as all us middle aged dudes loving the nostalgia of Pokemon collecting. That should give some hope and value to the cards in the future. Unlike other TCGs, Pokemon is not too complicated to play, fun to collect and great for all ages. That creates a strong market for years to come. In my opinion...
I’m one of the collectors who got into it this last year, and it’s because of my son! Pokemon did a great thing with the Trick or Trade packs, that’s what sucked us in. His first cards were ToT and we both plunged headfirst into the hobby from there.
I’ll never forget the days of 2012 when I’d jump on eBay, find a Japanese seller and load my cart with vintage cards and it would cost me nothing haha 😂 they were practically throwing them at you back then. Pokemon cards have exploded since Pokemon Go and the detective Pikachu movie and of last 2-3 years it has just absolutely erupted. It’s nice to see :)
Yeah, I was on ebay regularly in 2006 and beyond. It was 180 degrees different than today. It was like a thrift shop on there. I was a highschooler and would ask my mom if I could bid on stuff, lol. I wish I had bought Shining pokemon, but I refused to buy anything that wasn't in perfect condition, which I couldn't afford in those particular cards.
I got back in 2016/17 i remeber ud go to target and there be a ton of clearence and dropped prices … i remeber a charizard gx box that was on sale but still alot for me at the time so i passed … should have got it … and u could get collection boxes for under 10$
I jumped in around 2022. It’s honestly bonkers how so many people are flooding to Pokemon TCG again. Someone(s) on the Pokemon marketing team got the idea that if they put nostalgia Pokemon on the artwork covers, buyers flood to it.
Ngl, between 151, Surging Sparks, and next Prismatic, i think the hobby is pretty intimidating. Unless you want to drop 1k on preorders, you're going to miss out. Everyone is just buying bulk sealed and reselling at outrageous amounts.
I can say for sure TCG Pocket got me back into it, bought my first battle deck in years and an ETB last week and played in a local tournament this week for the first time! Got beat 3/4 games and tied on the 4th but it was still so fun!
One of the LGS near me had a stack of cases of Surging Sparks BB's and I asked how much a booster box costs and the employee tells me "200 dollars". I say, "They're available on Pokemon Center for like 161 dollars" and she goes "Then buy it there". To me, this sums up what's going on in the space.
Yes, it’s so stupid, not only can you get it for msrp on the Pokémon center you’ll also get free shipping. Can’t wait for restocks to come in to all the scalpers have to just sit there with there product. There’s no reason for them to be sold over msrp aside from greed and trying to screw over other people in the community.
Is it that stupid? Look at the sneaker market. Shoes in store sometimes cost more than the same shoes you can order right away off StockX and eBay. So what’s the reason for the in store premium? I’ll give you two. 1) overhead cost and 2) instant availability. I will elaborate on point number 2. Sometimes you just need a box right away to calm a crying child, OR a stream that you gotta rip in a couple hours and no other place to get a BB from. So where do you go? LGS.
Because they do not apply to you and me and the people those stores can not sell $200 a box to. But that does not mean those reasons are fully exempt for every one else across the board. Which is the very explanation why those boxes are at $200.
I'm 48 and was a teacher when Pokemon was first getting popular. I didn't collect then but always saw kids with cards and thought they were cool. I collected baseball cards as a kid and MTG while I was in the Army and watched anime Now that I have young kids and I love the artwork I started collecting as a family just a few months ago and loving every moment of it as someone in the upper age bracket of the hobby.
really enjoying the content you've been putting out, your videos are high quality and engaging all the way through. you're very talented at this and I have no doubt you're top-tier at what you do professionally.
When you get back into Pokemon cards for the first time in 15 years but you can't find anything anywhere because it's all sold out smh... Got two regular Surging Spark ETBs coming early next week from Target, can't wait! Been learning a lot from this channel
I haven't bought pokemon cards in 19years until I recently played the new pocket tcg, and it made me aware of how active the tcg. I saw the 151 set, and wanted to get the originals like the old days. I quickly found out how popular the collector surge is, and I'm in that surge now with the rest!
The SWSH alt art definitely deserved the bump in price they got earlier this year. Glad to see them rebounding a bit. Now that they're out of print, the only way is up!
Its a different period because I bought surging sparks from pokemon center.... something that is unheard of last year buying a SV booster box from pokemon center at MSRP being a "deal"... 161 for a box is insane compared to 90-110. But i guess this is the new norm and comes with a new price tag.
I was opening the first edition back then but never found good one lol. Right now I am scratching my self on why this suddenly booming. But yeah, I just stay in digital mode so I just collect on my TCGP 😂
I have to disagree with Umbreon VMAX being too expensive to make sense. I made a video about why I think it’s high price makes sense and one of the major reasons is it would take you on average $33k of packs to pull one. Couple that with it being the face of the modern pokemon era, it’s high price all the sudden seems really reasonable if not undervalued. Plus a high population of psa 10’s doesn’t matter if everyone wants it and few people are selling relative to the price of the card. Like real estate the price is set at the margin for what’s actually for sale at any given time.
Been watching you for the last several days now. I just subbed because you definitely deserve it with the amount of information you provide to new and old people of the game and what to get into and stay away from. I like being helped in my decision making when it comes to to buying boosters vs etb's etc. I like the most bang for my buck ya know.
Hey Phillip! I bought a few things during this weekend and I was wondering what you would do with them if they were yours. I bought two TCG Sword & Sheild 9 Brilliant Stars Checklane Blister (-10%), 1 Pokemon TCG Collector Chest(-10%), 2 Obsidian Flames Elite Trainer (-25%), 1 Back to School Eraser Blister 2024 (-20%). I was thinking of keeping one of the ETB as well as the blisters and opening one ETB as well as the collector chest.
I think it's because YT has been pushing more and more pokemon unboxing videos on people. I feel like there's more people only in it to gamble and make money (and stash boxes for 10 years for profits) than people actually caring about Pokemon.
Its not market manipulation when every big SIR is crazy price and booster boxes are selling out on preorder... everyones trying to make a profit on a hobby when times are hard
I just wanna say I really appreciate all the effort you put into your content. I know how tough it can be to be a content creator and just know that it’s been amazing getting to watch you and your community develop. Keep the fire burning, your light really is a joy to see 👍

me too
Collected until I was 13. I’m 28 now and I’m right back to it
exactly same for me :)
Same for me. Got back into it over a year ago after 20yrs
what a great time for TCG Pocket to get me wanting to rip real packs again for the first time in over a decade 😂
I been telling my buddy, exactly that, would happen. They do a good job 😅
Honestly, I don't really get the hype around Surging Sparks. There's some cool card arts in there, but nothing making it stand out to me
Right time, right amounts of money available, and willingness to gamble.
Same its a good set but i dont think its the Best set … pikachu is a great card but 500 is crazy
It’s an awful set in my opinion
Pikachu is one, if not the most popular pokemon to collect, it is up there with Charizard.
I think the investor bros who made money on vivid voltage during the pandemic saw another pikachu chase card and thought they could replicate that hype. Then the FOMO sets in other people and there's your artificial demand.

i bought the umbreon last year for $450 when the card was the lowest i saw it , and all my friends and ex called me crazy
Me too basically, but 480 CAD and grading it included. It paid off!
I remember during covid everyone said pokemon is at it's peak. PC can't top this momentum and them IR and SAR took the cards to a whole new level

I’m in the same boat, it’s not a terrible set but it’s just been way over hyped for what it actually is.

I wasn’t in the hobby during the hype of SWSH but I would imagine we are in a similar level of craziness during the later half of the SWSH era.
Great time to secure cheaper sets, as people will get nostalgic for these sets quick if another Pokemon hype spike hits!

Do you think prismatic evolution booster bundle is a better value then ETB ?
Y’all should’ve seen the hype in 2020-2021. You literally had to wait at stores during stock days to fight with scalpers to get any product.
To be fair I think we’re in a similar time period now
@@phillips.collectiblesim still finding SS at most of my local stores. Not hard to get

Surprisingly different 😉

Also tik tok. I kept getting tik tok lives of pack openings which got me back into it.
They printed too much of the first few sets in SV and toned it down, but clearly they overshot and aren't printing enough anymore.
Great info Phil
Surging sparks ETB and boosters have been available at my targets and gamestops all week. 151 is still impossible to find 😥
Lovin it to be honest! Gotta be quick so you're not salty
Market Manipulation. That SIR Pikachu does not deserve to be that high.
The market says otherwise
It’s literally both market manipulation AND a huge increase Market demand. Both can co-exist, it’s not always just one causing all.
Its not market manipulation when every big SIR is crazy price and booster boxes are selling out on preorder... everyones trying to make a profit on a hobby when times are hard
