I was so blessed to listen to 70s & 80s Heavy Metal music. And to hear & see these metal gods perform live, was like having a resurrection of unbridled fury & ecstasy, all rolled into a phantasm.
England gave us all a lot of amazing things, including the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and tons of other awesome bands. But, England also gave us their greatest offering ever--Iron Maiden. Up the irons!!!
This was their 1st performance of this track, the audience hadn't even heard it on an album as the album hadn't yet been released. Such a great track. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I first heard this in Chicago in 1982 at a venue called ChicagoFest where I was working as a photographer. From the opening chime to the last note played I was mezmerized . Everyone not with the band or label who never heard this just stood and watched at the amazing performance and I don't think I lifted my camera for the entire 8 minutes or so. Iron Maiden is an incredible band but this track is just so epic, it is on another level.
@ms51675 Still trying to find out if this was an after mix in a studio or not. That's 82 and that is truly amazing even if it is with the equipment back then. By far one of the best recordings of this song to have his bass that up front. Harris is incredible, it's nice to hear him that clear. Don't find many live videos from the 80's that sound this good.
One of my favorite Maiden tracks and in my opinion this is the absolute best recorded performance of it. Performed at the Hammersmith Odeon in front of a small intimate crowd. The band and the audio technicians nailed this entire show. Hard to believe it was recorded in 1982 with how good the sound quality is. You're in for a treat.
@@madman1366 You're right...when I say were, I'm just thinking back to the times I saw them live in the 80's. Think I saw them eight times, more than any other band. Dave Murray is one of my heroes.
By Christmas Day next year, the name alone of this band will be 50 years old. Whatever your view on them, you cannot deny their influence and longevity. Indeed, my older brother introduced me to their first album when I was a kid.
Iron maiden was formed in 1975, and had already undergone a number of lineup changes by 1982. Lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson joined the band in 1981. Talking of small venues, they started off playing in pubs, although they have continued playing in smaller venues as well as the likes of stadia. I saw them in Ayr Pavillion in south west Scotland in 1990.
There's nothing like a Maiden concert and nowadays seeing 3 generations from families at concerts shows their enduring appeal. I saw Bruce and his band recently and he stills holds that stage.
I first heard them in 1988, when I was 13. I loved everything about them, the guitars in harmony, the galloping feel to their songs and Bruce's emotionally charged voice. They were way better than anything else I'd heard at the time and I couldn't wait to hear more. I became obsessed with their 1985 album 'Live After Death' simply because it was live. It took me into what it'd be like to experience them at a concert and I couldn't wait to see them for the first time. I'm just glad I got to grow up with really fantastic music.
I remember just sitting in my room listening to this album, I was 13 or 14. I thought I was discovering a great singer. lol. Apparently I wasn't the only one and to this day Bruce is still one of The Best!!!!
There is a very specific reason Iron Maiden is considered one of the greatest live bands of all time. Go to a concert and witness it in person and you will understand.
Saw them live. The last time with my sons. It was awesome They are one of the most important metal bands ever. Rock in Rio is a must for you. The crowd is crazy good.
in the 1970's Iron Maiden played regularly at a venue where I grew in Kingsbury NW London. Called the Bandwagon it was a 700 capacity hall that was attached to a pub called the Prince of Wales. Unfortunately it's no longer there & is now a Tesco Metro or similar. "From small acorns mighty oaks do grow".
I told you you have to see them live. Finally you listened :). And the older they get the better they are on stage. Actual Iron Maiden is pure joy to watch.
It can be argued that this song is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, in rock history. Certainly, this performance, from 1982, it simply incredible. Great reaction
I love Iron Maiden!!! I'm nearly 60 & I've been lucky enough to enjoy such classic bands!!!I'm soooo excited for September I'm going to see these legends live in Sydney Australia supported by Killswitch Engaged. The last of the great rockers!!! Thank you for sharing loved it ❤️
Live is great, but even better in person. Feeling the base in ur chest, the vibe from the band, the vibe from the fans, the full atmosphere, its addicting and why Ive been going to concerts since I was 10 in 75. Yes, I had the coolest Aunt, I blame her, lol. Thanx, Peace
These guys are top tier musicians. Intelligent and professional. The two guitarists have to be in perfect sync at times and it takes focus. You can't be jumping all over the place at those times. Bruce Dickenson is a powerhouse. And is actually pilots a jet liner. I love his solo Man of Sorrows. A metal like ballad Great reaction. Thanks!
Bruce Dickenson. Singer. Iron maiden. AND - - - He undertook a career as a commercial pilot for Astraeus Airlines, which led to a number of media-reported ventures such as captaining Iron Maiden's converted charter aeroplane, Ed Force One, during their world tours. Following Astraeus' closure, in 2012 he created his own aircraft maintenance and pilot training company, Cardiff Aviation. Dickinson presented his own radio show on BBC Radio 6 Music from 2002 to 2010, and has also hosted television documentaries, authored novels and film scripts, created a beer with Robinsons Brewery and competed at fencing internationally
Bruce "The Human Air Raid Siren" Dickinson joined Iron Maiden in 1981 and they are still touring as of 2024. With the same energy, presence and power. Bruce did reach the age limit and cannot pilot himself the private jet of the band anymore, and he did lose a bit of his extreme vocal range and endurance after beating throat cancer, so he's not able to hold that 26 seconds high note anymore, and he "only" has a 5 octaves range anymore. His biography is astonnishing, he's an Olympic-level fencer, a philantropist, flew the 747 jet of the band himself into war zone to bring relief supplies, has written children books, has owned his own flight school and flying company, and sooooo much more. Dig in, dig deep, you won't regret it !

This was Bruce’s first tour with Maiden. I was fortunate enough to see them on this tour. They were opening for The Scorpions. They completely stole the show. I don’t believe they ever opened again.
They also had Girlschool on the bill in Houston. Who were pretty good too. I saw the Corpus Christi show and Houston show on this tour. Corpus didn't have Girlschool.
@kennywilkus1632 I bought the tickets to the Houston show before they announced the Corpus show. I really wanted to see Maiden since I missed them in S A. the year before with Di'anno. I had already seen Scorpions on the Lovedrive tour. Luckily, I've seen Di'anno live at a bar with about 100 people there. His band was Icarus Witch, which played for him.
Maiden is one of the best live bands you’ll ever see! I know they’re the best I’ve seen! The only thing I don’t enjoy about this video is that they didn’t show enough of Adrian Smith during his solo. He’s the man!!!! Thanks for doing this!! 🤘🤘🎸🎸❤️
I knew Bruce for a short time. Believe it or not, he told me he trained with an opera coach! What? The opera coach convinced him to sing in a higher range and that's when his career took off. Still makes me smile.
Watching Bruce live always makes me think he was a hyperactive child! He has so much energy! I mean come on he runs around like a crazy man on stage and still has those great vocals while doing it! Insane!
Amazing reaction as always! An incredible live performance! The whole song is excellent, but this one gets me because it was live and the impeccable timing is unreal!
My favourite maiden song! I’m a 55 year ld women and have loved Iron Maiden since I was about 12. The guitarist Janick Gers lives near me and I often see him in our local shopping centre or local village having a pint. Very quiet guy!! You wouldn’t believe he as a member of one of the biggest bands in the world…. Iron maiden started around the mid 70s when I was 6. You need to watch them do their tours when the lead singer Bruce Dickinson pilots the boing 757 ..now that something!, Apparently Bruce Dickinson is worth around £130 million dollars alone
My buddy won a trip to London in December 1988 from radio station 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia. We discovered that Iron Maiden was playing at the Hammersmith Odeon that week with the Killer Dwarves and luckily got tickets. A lifetime memory I'll never forget. I still have the Odeon security staff sweatshirt I bought from one of the security dudes for 20 quid! Up the Irons! 😎🔥🎸
My very first concert ever was Iron Maiden when I was 12 in 1983. Saw them again in 1985 and a 3rd time about 10-12 years ago. They sounded just as good all those years later. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I used to hang out with these guys in East London way back in the late 70's and early 80s. We all drank and messed about in the Ruskin Arms pub and they were all the most humble decent blokes you could meet. I used to play football ⚽️ with Stevie Harris for a local amateur team (Melbourne FC) and trust me he was as good as that as he is on the bass. I must have seen them 30 times in the Ruskin Arms and smaller venues before they made it. They are still the most decent and humble dudes around. Stevie still keeps in touch and is still a massive West Ham Utd fan!!! Lookat his wrist band! Up the Irons ⚒️⚒️⚒️.....Bruce by the way is not a football fan....i met him whilst he was the singer in Sansome and it was obvious he was going to join Maiden and he is an incredibly intelligent bloke⚒️
Can't believe that as a POM you've never heard your own national band. The Maiden started back in the late 70s and are still around today. One of the greatest bands ever.
"SPEAK TO ME HAMMERSMITH".. Bruce dickinson quote on live after death tour. One the best live albums ever. The venue was about eight thousand people. Oct 1984
in 82. you asked when they started. it was around 75 or 76, but some of them knew each other since earlier. They were playing shows in the late 70s. But the group chopped and changed members before 1980, except for Steve Harris and Dave Murray, who have appeared on every album since they started. In terms of being 'dialled in' these guys are in the zone, every time they play. Given they made this music before the likes of Metallica and other metal bands, these guys are straight pioneers of the genre. Their timing and precision as a group is remarkable. On top of that they've always stayed within the realm of 'melody' and never just making noise like some other heavy rock groups. The fact they are still making records and touring to this very day - playing music over 6 Decades is just unbelievable. Without question the greatest Heavy Metal group to exist.
A lot of people forget that this song was written and recorded only a few months before this Hammersmith performance, which took place prior to the album's release. So it's not like they'd played it live for years. It was brand new.
This concert was from 1982 on the tour for Iron Maiden's 3rd album (their 1st w/ singer Bruce Dickinson) 'The number of the beast'... The venue was the Hammersmith Odeon (now Eventim Apollo) in London. The live record was titled 'Beast over Hammersmith'. Iron Maiden was formed in 1975 by Steve Harris (bass) in London as a pub band... they would perform cover songs as well as original songs that Harris was writing (early songs like 'Wrathchild' ... 'Innocent exile' ... 'Iron Maiden' ... 'Invasion'... etc.) Harris was always searching for talent to improve the band's live sound and execution... he met Dave Murray (guitar) in 1976 and asked him to join Maiden... After some line-up shifts, Dave Murray joined permanently by 1977 w/ Doug Sampson (drums)... Paul Di'Annno (vocals) joined in '77 as well and Iron Maiden spent years playing gigs across the UK while holding down day jobs... They built a huge following but had some trouble finding a 2nd guitarist for their dual-lead guitar sound (a few guitarists came and went!) In 1979, Iron Maiden was finally signed to EMI Records, just as Doug Sampson was leaving the band... their 1980 debut album was recorded w/ Clive Burr (drums) and Dennis Stratton (2nd guitar)... and the album charted at #4 in the UK... Paul Di'Anno had a punk rock edge to his vocals and that made Maiden very popular in Europe as they toured the rest of the year. Adrian Smith (2nd guitar) replaced Dennis Stratton before they recorded 2nd album 'Killers' in 1981... the band toured N. America and Japan for the first time. However, the extensive touring led to singer Paul Di'Anno unable to cope w/ the demands of Iron Maiden - he parted ways w/ the band in '81 and was replaced by Bruce Dickinson (vocals) Maiden's sound became streamlined in 1982 w/ 3rd album 'The number of the beast' and it went to #1 on the UK charts and sold platinum (1 million copies) in the US... Nicko McBrain (drums) replaced Clive Burr in 1983 for 4th album 'Piece of Mind' - another platinum hit as Iron Maiden became an arena heavy metal band w/ the release of 5th album 'Powerslave' in 1984. There is an early concert video 'Live at the Rainbow' which Iron Maiden filmed in late 1980 at the Rainbow Theater w/ Paul Di'Anno on vocals, performing early Maiden songs like - 'Phantom of the Opera' ... 'Wrathchild' ... 'Remember tomorrow'... 'Killers'... 🔥🤘 'Beast over Hammersmith' was filmed in 1982 but not released (at the time) because of technical issues w/ the footage and lighting. 'Live after death' was Maiden's first official live album, filmed and recorded at Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, California on the 1984 'Powerslave' tour... released in 1985. They released the concert video 'Maiden England' in 1988 filmed on the tour for 'Seventh son of a seventh son'. On the 1992/ '93 tour for 'Fear of the dark'... Maiden filmed their Donington '92 festival set... and what was supposed to be Bruce Dickinson's final show (He announced that he was leaving Iron Maiden in 1993) was a Pay-per-view event filmed w/ horror illusionist Simon Drake as host... It was released in '93 as the concert video 'Raising Hell'. The band did not officially record or release any concert video when Blaze Bayley (vocals) was in Iron Maiden from 1995 til 1998... but they did release a live clip of the song 'Afraid to shoot strangers' w/ Bayley on vocals in '96.
A long time ago, before TH-cam reactors, we had audience reactors. They reacted by buying this album and making it one of the best selling albums ever and creating history.
What I felt upon listening now (and I’ve listened to it many dozens of times) is that the fast, furious section including the solos, narratively, is the condemned man grappling with his fate and rebelling against the certainty of his execution. Very moving song!
I saw Maiden 1986-10-21 Georges Hall, Bradford, Steve Harris (bassist) had to go off half way through when he was told his wife had gone into labour with their first child, saw them in 1988 at Donnington as well, amazing.
The most energetic concert I have even been to was Maiden in 1985. I saw them a few years ago and they seemed just as energetic, but I wasn't quiet as such.
Back then to play at the Hammersmith Odeon was the pinnacle for many bands. The Hammersmith Odeon is an iconic venue or the Hammersmith Apollo as it's known today .
Live After Death is the best live album of all time. Saw them on Ozzfest and absolutely killed. When the giant Eddie came out on stage it was incredible. Best live band I've ever seen.
I seen Iron Maiden in 1983 Piece Of Mind Tour in Toronto 🇨🇦 I was 18 years old. Front row center stage It was a killer night. Wish I could do it all over again!!!!
The last time I saw them live was at a small venue when they toured after Bruce and Adrian rejoined the band. Yes they both had sadly left for a time. It was a place called the Aragon Ballroom (the Brawlroom) here in Chicago. Walking out of the place you could still feel the bass! It was crazy!
The audience never heard this before. The album wasn’t yet released. Historical night!!
They definitely did a _Number_ on the audience that night.
They were an opening band on this tour...they were not after.
And if my memory don't fail me that was the last time they opened for someone because they outshined the main attraction.

This video is a desert island classic for sure. I can always listen to this performance. Great to see your reaction and glad you liked it
I used to hang out with these guys in East London way back in the late 70's and early 80s.
Amazing memories mate. Thanks for sharing that.
Dave Murray is one of the most Underrated guitarists. He is easily top 10.
Hallowed Be Thy Name Rock in Rio 30 year later i guess still amazing, check it all
Can't believe that as a POM you've never heard your own national band. The Maiden started back in the late 70s and are still around today. One of the greatest bands ever.
The best thing you can do for your yourself! Just keeping react maiden ! best band ever walked at earth!
Bet this goes on the playlist, Great band ! Great song !🤘
The almighty Iron Maiden... Yes brother up with the horns ... How about that booming bass line .. his voice is epic .. the whole band just perfection
One of the great rock voices!
You are correct about the increased tempo, Iron Maiden usually speed it up a little live, especially in the early days.
Yay!!! Another Maiden reaction, fantastic reaction as always.
Iron Maiden : Purgatory
Not being around much after 82, I'm rolling on the floor!!!
I saw them in 1982 on the East Coast, My senior year, and was hitting the concerts of great bands, Great times❤😊
Love the extra noise on Steve Harris's bass, it's like the strings hitting the frets or the pickups, it's just so cool!
Brilliant song!🏴
'Invasion'... etc.)
Harris was always searching for talent to improve the band's live sound and execution... he met Dave Murray (guitar) in 1976 and asked him to join Maiden... After some line-up shifts, Dave Murray joined permanently by 1977 w/ Doug Sampson (drums)... Paul Di'Annno (vocals) joined in '77 as well and Iron Maiden spent years playing gigs across the UK while holding down day jobs... They built a huge following but had some trouble finding a 2nd guitarist for their dual-lead guitar sound (a few guitarists came and went!)
In 1979, Iron Maiden was finally signed to EMI Records, just as Doug Sampson was leaving the band... their 1980 debut album was recorded w/ Clive Burr (drums) and Dennis Stratton (2nd guitar)... and the album charted at #4 in the UK...
However, the extensive touring led to singer Paul Di'Anno unable to cope w/ the demands of Iron Maiden - he parted ways w/ the band in '81 and was replaced by Bruce Dickinson (vocals)
Maiden's sound became streamlined in 1982 w/ 3rd album 'The number of the beast' and it went to #1 on the UK charts and sold platinum (1 million copies) in the US...
'Beast over Hammersmith' was filmed in 1982 but not released (at the time) because of technical issues w/ the footage and lighting.
A real treat.
A long time ago, before TH-cam reactors, we had audience reactors. They reacted by buying this album and making it one of the best selling albums ever and creating history.
Up the IRONS 🤘 Capn 🏴☠️☘️
Iron Maidens greatest song
Mate I’d love you to do fear of the dark live at Rio - you’ll be a walking goosebump!
Love this band too & when I was young I kept drawing Eddie his monster, they have great art
Dude Hammersmith was one of the main concert halls for all bands🤘
Back then to play at the Hammersmith Odeon was the pinnacle for many bands. The Hammersmith Odeon is an iconic venue or the Hammersmith Apollo as it's known today .
Oh my god what a tune what a band wvey tune is amazing especially live
Live After Death is the best live album of all time. Saw them on Ozzfest and absolutely killed. When the giant Eddie came out on stage it was incredible. Best live band I've ever seen.
British pride bro . From an Australian , and also the rest of the world 👍
yeah nah for this song this is the best version clearly, in fact I didnt really care for the album version, but now its one of their best for me.
I seen Iron Maiden in 1983 Piece Of Mind Tour in Toronto 🇨🇦 I was 18 years old. Front row center stage It was a killer night.
Wish I could do it all over again!!!!
They started in 1975 and are currently on tour in the US and selling out everywhere show as they always do.
