Thank you for making this video. It spark my childhood memories in 80s - 90s where almost every home and night street vendors in my town have this lamp ..
Well, i have started to call this "analog lamp" on these electronic times = D Now when autumn hits us here in Finland i simply took this out and use it again and it works, works and works.
In my village, in 90s and early 2000s, it was a preserve of the village tycoons. One had to even have a receipt. Surprising that things have changed so fast and almost every home now has electricity.
Thank you for your video. I went back to my 10 years old in the old fifties when I lived in Moçambique (Africa). There were several places without electricity as beaches, farms, and so on and my father had one Petromax. I can remember it as if it was today. Best regards from Portugal.😀
I had one, which was given to me by a missionary nun who came to live in our community in northern Uganda - Gulu. It brings me nice memories, it was a bit expensive to replace the net, so we would use it once in a while
Really need to find one of these... Brings back tons of childhood memories.... reminds me of my dad... Sometimes it would take time to light up...and could get dangerous.... Soo much nostalgia.. 🇰🇪
Excellent tip! I've used this soft-start method a few times now and it is totally reliable - I won't bother with the blow torch again, that just wastes fuel and pressure. Thank you!
I have 4 off these lamps, love them, great fun. There are a couple of things to look out for, One is the pricker which can easily bend so be gentle and keep clean, Two and more important is the fuel cap seal. When you release the pressure i suggest that the air is let out slowly as it is a flammable gas that could go into the lamp itself.
If anyone is still trying to find how to fix there HK500 Petromax lantern. I just did the fix and is was simple. You need to replace the point that is located in the tube going up to the top. Remove the cover and then remove the small nut at the top. Inside is the point. There is a small tool included with a replacement point. Put is the new one and it will work fine.

There is absolutely NO pressure on the tank when the pre-warmer is lighted, i close the filling cap on video before i start pumping.. Just pre-heat with the "cup" and when the cup is almost burned out start pumping slowly, when it lights up start pressurizing the tank. The needle-valve is open all time through process..
The starting fuel is called "sinol" which is commonly sold in here Finland. It consist mostly ethanol and other ingredients so it burns hot but not wildly..
Very interesting! I'll try this in a few weeks on my lamp. I always pumped the pressure high during preheating with the needle valve closed. And opended it (under full pressure) shortly before the alcohol has burned completely. Sometimes that produced a big flame coming out of the chimney.
What is the white cloth that burns and makes light? It has to be some rort of non burning material. Does it ever "burn" to death?..huge mystery for me.
@@Lerssinen Cheers. I'm looking at a nice new brass HK500 for our anniversary, we both enjoy the outdoor, but it seems to be an absolute ball-ache to even start the damn thing... Do you get faster with experience? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy splitting wood with an axe, smoking a pork butt for 14 hours, or spending just as long preparing a tobacco pipe! Is it the same with a lantern, enjoying the preparation as much as the actual use? Thanks!
@@EssexCountyPhoto The starting is part of the theme in this case. I can sure believe that if this was only light available it would be pain in a** but what comes to atmosphere and feel this just knocks right places for me. Starting to full light takes about 3 minutes, no real need or way to speed it up.
In Indonesia some of street food seller such as fried rice man uses this kind of lamp. I notice the light is so bright far through the alley. It is brighter that electric bulb. I wonder how the fabric in the middle of the tank not burned? And how to turn it off?
The fabric changes its state when its burned first time, its not fabric after that. To turn it off you just simply release the pressure on fuel compartment and the lantern shuts off.
Hello, I'm here after having watched Technology Connection's videos and now I want a lantern. I think I'll go for a Coleman dual-fuel and use petrol since it doesn't require any preheating or buy a Campingaz butane lantern that costs far less than a Coleman or Petromax one But I have a few questions about lanterns in general since I don't have any up to this day: - What about build quality especially for newer Petromax lanterns ? compared to Coleman if you have any of them. I ask because I read from customer reviews that Petromax lanterns are now made in China and of poorer quality than older ones. How true is it ? - Also what are the risks of using the blowtorch on a Petromax ? I have read the user manual of the HK500 or 150 (I don't remember which) and it basically tells that using the blowtorch will cause more wear and tear on the lantern but without further information. Any experience ? - Is it possible to adjust the flame strength and thus brightness on a Petromax like you can on a Coleman ? - What would happen if when you want to turn off the light you were to just close the fuel valve (On a Petromax) instead of depressurising the tank ?
You can shut down this lamp with the nozzle, it keeps the pressure in tank if seals dont leak. Altough it can have a small leak and it leaks the top part of lamp full of lamp fuel and when you try to light it again it can turn into a firestorm. So, when not in use, always pressure down to zero. There is no way to adjust the brightness, it depends on the pressure a bit but not much. We dont have those coleman lamps here in europe so i dont know about how their system works but i have seen same video and it looked an functional device. Only thing that worries me is the very flammable fuel, as lamp fuel is not so flammable on normal circumstances. The chinese Petromax´s usually function okay and their parts are changeable with the standard ones as they are made from same parts all around. Maybe the overall build quality is not so good as original german ones.

Its clean burning ethanol, i dont know is it available on all countries..
In my country they used kerosene to light these lamp, they are called "hajack light" locally.
We are considering getting one of these lamps.
Please could you tell me where you fill the paraffin...is it where the pressure guage is?
Thank you
The pressure gauge is also an cap of fuel tank, it screws open normally.
Yg ada burnernya gini biasanyanya sy nyalakan tanpa spiritus. Langsung pompa buka burner kasih korek sampai panas baru buka kran ke lampu.
Have you tried other starter liquids? When I put in the kerosene it blackened the glass when it preheats. Have you tried vodka?
Kerosene is not good pre-heat, needs to be something more cleaner burning..
Use methylated spirit. Drink the vodka.
As M'Learn'd colleague wisely directs, drink the Vodka then there will be no need of a lamp. Alight or not it won't be visible under the table.
Why don't you use simple alcohol like the ones in the pharmacy? That is easy to find
I have one these for 20 years . Just got it out for sevising ...
