Thank you!!!! The typewriter guy in my smallish city has closed his doors, and I REALLY wanted to fix the "g" key on my typewriter. Your careful instruction and hard-to-get camera angles made it possible. So satisfying! You are providing such a wonderful service.
And again I owe you a thank you for making this. I watched a couple of your videos and managed to make my Erika work properly. I'm really satisfied that I could learn to do it myself with your help. Much obliged.
Thank you!! I just bought a Smith-corona clipper and noticed a lever disconnected and the parts all looked fine other than a slight warp. I was SO confused as to how it had gotten disconnected in the first place. This showed me how it had happened, how to fix it, and what the arm should look like. I appreciate it!
So... I just received a Galaxie II that was shipped badly and one of the linkages was disconnected. Of course, I didn't even really know what a linkage was called, but I got lucky and yours was the first video I found! Didn't have the proper tools, but managed to straighten and reattach the linkage that came off in transport. May your tribe increase.
I just bought a 1970s Smith Corona electric, with two keys in this condition. Thanks for the information. No guarantees I'm coordinated enough to repair them, but can try.
I bought a Smith-Corona Coronet Super 12 electric with the number 4 key not striking. I had to move the belt and push down on the keys to get them to move. I watch this video and was able to fix the key in 10 minutes. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
Thanks - I came here because I just bought a Coronet Super 12 and "r" key is not striking, and was about to ask about electric typewriters where you can't just manually pull up the type bars. I'll try your method of moving the belt and pushing down the keys!
Very informative video. Nice to know that I might have a chance of doing this repair if I have a similar failure. Thank you for making these videos available.
(: Your videos are becoming 'a thing' for me..... The 'S' key stopped working on a Smith-Corona Flat-Top Standard I picked up, literally mid type test lol..... I thought I broke it but was referred to this video. I'm still catching up on terminology so a lot of my issues, I just don't know what to search to find fixes. But your content is very solid, and has helped me a few times already with stuff that I expected to have ti pay for! 😅 Thanks a MILLION!!!
You are amazing! I have the same machine also. On my Smith Corona Galaxie II, would you happen to know where the serial number is? I took the bottom panel off, removed the platen and cleaned it up well but could not locate the serial number.
I'm working on overhauling a Comptometer right now and I can SO sympathize with how frustrating it is to position and set stuff like this! (And with a Comptometer, there is an endless amount of springs to put in place.) Congrats on getting it to fit on with just the second try! MY question is how in the heck this stuff ends up getting bent that badly in the first place? I mean, the only thing I can figure is it got set on top of something that poked up through the bottom. Very strange to think how things like that happen. Type bars are KIND of understandable, but the rest is just weird.
the 1 and Q keys are unpinned on mine, i can’t seem to get the pins into the little key thing… i don’t have any tools really so it’s a bit of a challenge
I have a question Couple weeks ago I bought a 1930s underwood typewriter. And I notice the letter 'i' type bar head is broken. What can I do to fix it?
Sound like your gonna have to find a type bar from a parts/donor typewriter & replace bar Then you might have to replace type slug (face) too. see this video . . . th-cam.com/video/c_okhLnFVVA/w-d-xo.html
If you have the electric smith corona and you need to reconnect the linkage (as I did), you need to turn the machine on to get the typebars on either side of the offending letter/bar out of the way (by typing, then grabbing them when they are up to the platten. Otherwise there is no room to expand the spring and capture the rivet.
Yes getting clearance is 1/2 the challenge, pro tip for electrics, turn the belt(s) (fluted shaft) by hand while pressing keytop to lift typebars manual by hand

Thank you!!!

On the bottom there is a little rectangular window, the S/N is in the window

What's the bending tool called? I couldn't quite hear that part.

What to do when it doesnt come back?
Too vague of a question to answer blindly. Look for bind, Look for old oil (sticking), Look for springs off, Look . . . .
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 okay il do that thanks
Sub lever link,,, not type bar link.
Yea I knew that wasn't the right nomenclature for that link, thanks for the clarification
