I noticed that screw right in the middle during most of that video. It looks to me like the rubber bit is a wedge, and if you loosen that adjustment screw and run the guide to the left, higher up on the wedge, it would raise the arm and solve the problem? I guess that’s why there’s so much adjustment in that slot. Love the videos! Thanks!
I have an identical machine…I pushed the power spacer, it flew across, drive home, the vibration fixed it because now it works. Freed a lot of frozen parts. Looks like a drink spill on the left side at some time in its life before me. The best part is the bell works, worst most dirty filthy broken machine I’ve bought but the bell works.
Nice video. Always great to see work done on these machines. I have two , and your videos are always well done. It gives me more confidence to undertake more work on my machines. Thanks for making them available.
On this one and mine the ribbon drive gears are plastic. The right ribbon spool axle pulls out leaving the horizontal gear below resting on the drive axle but it can easily fall out. The left doesn’t come out oddly enough. In the video where the ribbon reverse is fixed that model 6 has metal ribbon drive gears. The rest of the machine is the same high quality since the 1930s.
I actually just purchased one of these very cheap at goodwill the other day, and it's in pretty good working order, minus that it was dirty, even had original paperwork with it. Smith-Coronas are definitely the easiest to work on.
Good to know the cause of that racket a few of my SCM electrics make, and that it's not an issue. Figured it was the belt system bouncing - hell I've seen it do just that, but it's good to know for sure :D
I fixed that. I’m saw your video about a year ago. I finally caught up with my project. I screwed it in but, I Tightened it a little to hard and it broke. It fixed the problem. It broke in half. What is that part called..? Or will I have to get a dinner typewriter?
Phoenix Typewriter Yes. I know call my typewriter a competition typewriter. It power spaces in a flash 🆚 how it could be regulated to sound like a machine gun. I just control it with my left hand. Maybe I can still regulate it with small tools or by finding a donning typewriter that it’s not worth fixing.
Well that was 2 yrs ago, I believe with some extra effort I got both the typewriter and case back in acceptable order I'm sure I sold it, just not sure if it was local or out-of-state. I know I have fixed a few power spacers since that one, and they all had their challenges to overcome.

Another great video. The Smith-Corona manuals are great machines.
Thanks for the video. Wish I could tear my machines apart, diagnose the problem, and fix them this quickly.
what liquid solution do you use for cleaning?
Depends on what need cleaning ?
Nutrol, Denatured alcohol, Lacquer thinner, Simple green, Marvel mystery oil, compressed air, combinations of these, etc
Thanks! Glad I found this. Now be careful you don’t get tetanus in there... 😀

Last few I have seen were also cracked, not sure what the name is.
Worst case is just disabling the power spacer

Curious on what the ultimate fate was for this old girl? (MtPleasantTyper) 😃
