Hey Mark. This morning just for fun, I took regular Irish spring bar soap, took my inexpensive Omega brush, and Baili safety razor and had a good close shave. You can get a good shave without spending a lot of money.

Tim, this reminds me of what my what my late father used to do when I was very young. Having five kids, a wife, etc., it sometimes meant cutting some corners. I recall he would use ordinary bar soap for his shaves, as well.:)
      Thanks for this reminder.:)

Fully agree! however, I often go the other way and use a shave soap for soap when traveling. It is very similar to typical soap. Before bar soap, glycerine soaps or saphones, people bathed and shaved with oils. many shave soaps smell better and are better for your skin than detergent or sodium laureth bases. Some Cella or Tobac crammed into a chapstick container, and a sedef shavette and/or a disassembled 3 piece safety razor is my super compact shave kit. I have found that many women take a very positive notice of those two soaps and ask or comment. If I use them for soaps, it often leaves just enough scent to be noticed, if intimately close.

Good overview. And thanks for how you broke it down into the 3 groups. I'm looking forward to treating myself to one of the costlier artisan soaps soon. But for now all I have is the VDH, Williams and a tube of Cremo. And I gotta tell you, I like both of those puck soaps.

Hi, Ron Wright. thaks for the nice words. I made this video before I purchased from a couple of other artisan soap makers. Viewers encouraged me to get some Stirling shave soap. amazing how the world is changing , still remember that my father was shaving his whole life with the same razor ( gillette slim adjustable I believe it was ) and always with the same soap ( a dark brown shaving soap stick he bought in a very small artisan soap factory from the city of marseille france ), the reason why he used always the same shaving soap was that he and his brother who were making local beer , ( new my cousings are still making beer locally ) ,were always visiting france in order to buy their yearly stock of red wines ( france is very cheap if you are buying red wine in barrels in order to put them in bottles at home ) , so they visited the artisan shaving soap maker and bought a huge box of sticks , therefore it was always the same scent ,

Great video Mark ! Nice to hear your thoughts on some I was not familiar with. Pre De Provence is probably one of my favorites out of your stack. It last forever too. I believe it is actually a quad milled soap. I just got done shaving with it when I I watched this. I came across a natural clay based soap. With essential oils. It is really different. It tends to disappear as it dries but when done shaving the clay leaves you skin like it never felt before. I nice experience. Thanks again for the video ! 👍🏼

I've used Pre de Provence, Williams, Colgate, Taylor of OBS, Crabtree& Evelyn, Col. Conk. As a starter Col. Conk is great though you will go through those pucks pretty fast if used every-other-day. Williams and Colgate are super hard and last a long time....if you have hard water you may have trouble getting some amazing lather that can be achieved when you have good water. I settled Pre De Provence with as it is hard, has a clean fresh scent that I prefer, last and works well for me. Take the time to experiment, every face/beard is different and so is your water. Stick with a DE razor and quality shave soap and you will have an amazing shaving experience!!!

Hey Mark, first of all - great overview. I started with palmolive and this shaving soap gave me some great shaves. I still love it and use the creme variant always an vacations. After i tried the proraso line, which was also great. But tabac is hands down the best shaving soap so far. I used to buy it here in germany for a bit lower price. Today ive seen your cella review, i think it could match my preference as well. So far, thanks for your effort and have a great time. Btw as mentioned, im from germany. So sorry for my english.

I just got into wet shaving after 30+ years. I bought the Tabac in a bowl from a UK supplier as it is not available in Canada. No scent and it dries and no so rich lather, but it starts to foam pretty quick.

Hey I did start wet shaving 2 years ago because I anyway had sharpening equipment and didn't like to buy razors all the time.
I tried multiple cheap store bought soaps and didn't like them very much so I thought I should buy some handcrafted soaps that were pretty expensive but people said they are geogeous.
Since I started making my own hand soap and it was way better than any bought soap I used it for showering from then on and for example noticed I had no more shoe smelling when you wear them all day while hiking etc.
So then I thought why not formulating your own shaving soap.
By now I got my recipe together but still waiting for some supplies to arrive.
When it's ready to use I just had the spontaneous Idea if you could test it so I get a comparison from someone that has experience with many soaps and give me feedback on it.
Where are I living? US or Europe?

Great video, you should do a video when you find more natural soaps, I have found several more natural soap brands and some are even made in United States one of the ones that I'm most interested is BayBerry coast they have soaps and creams as well as pre and after shave. Another one called the blades grim which has a variety of scented soaps, there's another brand called naked armor and one called Paragon shaving, and they both make scented soaps that are natural.
There's also a brand called bib & tucker and WSP (wet shaving products) both are listed as natural.
If I find anymore I'll be sure to put them down in the post for you I have a huge list of shaving supplies that I need to try a little at a time on Amazon. One of my favorite brands for the moment is lather and wood for their pre and after shave and their scented sandalwood soap I love the natural smell and natural ingredients plus that nice close shave.
Oh! And a little extra tidbit I have found Amazon sells variety Razor blade packs for safety razors in varying amounts of blades, I have bought several of these they include a lot of the brands you have reviewed. It would be great for new wet shavers to try different brands and find the best shave without a large amount of money spent on one brand of blades. Some of them are close to $20 for a variety of a hundred blades. Also, some come with a block of alum.

Thanks.:) I'm now starting to look at natural soaps.:) But what constitutes a natural soap? What ingredients place it in the natural category or perhaps, keep it from being listed as a natural soap? An interesting question.:)

    • @IndianaDiy
      @IndianaDiy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@MarkSzorady That is a great question, a good example is your “Rugged Spice” soap if you or your viewers look at the ingredients on Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve website you can get an Idea of what to look for as far as chemicals or botanical names. Now that being said what about the other soaps that are Natural or Organic, depending on the product it is a good Idea to look up the chemical or botanical name if possible. The EWG (Environmental Working Group) Skin Deep cosmetic database is a good start to looking them up and learning about those chemicals or botanical names as well as other websites and Wikipedia.
So for example In the post from earlier, I said I like Lather & Wood shave soap Basically I look for things like Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea butter), Sodium Hydroxide, Tallow, Glycerin, Honey, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Hemp, and so on, etc. If it has a long name that I can't even say aloud I look it up, if it is a botanical name that's OK If it's a chemical then I keep reading the more chemicals that are on the product that could be harmful I won't buy that product.

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@IndianaDiy Wow!:) This is great info!:) Thanks for sharing and for also pointing us to the EWG Database. I will say this regarding the natural soap form CVS&S, my razor has no soap scum residue on it after the shave. I think this speaks to the natural ingredients in the product.

Got soap from every category - Proraso Tube cream is just so hard to pass up, The white preshave and cream (menthol) is just so refeshing
Also got Razorock croap- simply the best bang for your buck. The classic and xxx just got the lather, scent and slickness. Bergamot and Almond for the win. Cella In the tub is great too
Hard soaps- love the Tabac, found Surrey soaps on ebay, and Barrel and oak- pretty artisan on their own, nice and foamy except the Barrel and oak. Foam doesn’t stay, but man its VERY slippery. My fave underdog is the razorock soap sticks- blue is my fav, but worth looking into.

Mark Szorady, I believe u are correct. But it doesnt smell the same as cella. That almond/cherry scent is commonly found on alot of italian soaps. It is a traditional shaving soap smell around there.
Vitos supercrema and extra super coco are some of the best italian soaps, and they smell quite the same as cella, they might not be vegan, tho. But if u like to check them, i can recomment. Usually extra super coco base is considered slightly better but both belong to the elite of italian mass produced shaving soaps.
Personally I prefer tallow soaps but the guy was asking for vegan soap, with cella smell, so thats what I was replying to.

Ciao bella scelta dei saponi 👍 i miei saponi da barba sono Mondial alla mandorla che è ancora meglio di Cella. Poi Omega Aquae ottimo sapone duro poi Extro Cosmesi Tabacco e O'selvagio Tabac stick Proraso in tubo Linea Bianca, Blu, Verde. E in fine Barberia Bolognini Fresco Tutti saponi Italiani tranne il Tabac. Scusa anche la Cella Bio

Thank you very much, igoroptik! Almond Mondial is one I beleive I've seen discussed in forums.:) If it's better than Cella, then it's one I'll need to look for.:)

@@MarkSzorady Hello as its rival of the Mondial there is also the BARBERIA BOLOGNINI THE SOAP EMBROIDERED AND NOURISHING ARTISAN BEARD. It is a semi-hard soap like almond Mondial. They are very good handmade products made in Italy.

Prorasos are rough in the face
Per de provence smells good but it’s also a bit rough
Tabac is nice but you will smell like grandma
Michelle’s Wools fat is one of the better ones

Coincidentally, I used my Art of Shaving Sandalwood soap puck (in its bowl) this morning. This is the exact same NOS puck seen in this video that I purchased off Ebay. Wow! A really nice shave! Thick rich creamy lather. The newer TAOS soaps don't have tallow in them like the one I used this morning, but I've used the newer version and it's just as good.:) You may want to give it a try.:) The Art of Shaving TAOS Shaving Soap Refill, Sandalwood, 3.3 Ounce: amzn.to/2OE0z21
      With the bowl: amzn.to/34a8s5z
If you can find the original formulation (with tallow), its worth having, too.:)

Yes, Williams is no longer being produced, hence the inflated price.
