    Personally, I say if you have a broken timing belt on an interference engine. Put a new timing belt on the engine and see what happens. Now provided you didn't try to start it back up afterwards then hopefully there is no damage. If you replace it and the car runs then it's a success. If not, well then you got more work to do, but at least you have a new timing belt. As a matter of fact, the timing belt once broke on my grandfather's old 1988 240 and he knew not to start it after that and got it towed to a gas station where they successfully replaced it with no internal damage done. My dad picked him up from that incident as it was right around the corner from our house

    • @RobertDIY

      Old red block. Most people don't even replace the belt, just wait till it breaks, tow it home, toss on another belt.

    • @jimmiles33
      @jimmiles33 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michael Sackstein That only worked because the redblocks with SOHC were non interference engines. you can't damage the valves or pistons by breaking the belt on those.

    • @v8pilot
      @v8pilot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michael - I think the 240's engine may not be an interference engine so no damage if the belt goes. Years ago I was on holiday in Spain. I could not start the rental car and a guy in a 240 kindly phoned the rental car place to find the trick (crazy security system). Twenty miles down the road, i found the same 240 immobile by the side of the road. The driver explained that the timing belt had gone. I asked if that meant a new engine but he said no, all it would need was a new timing belt.

    Hi Robert and thanks for informative video which scared me a little bit. I have Volvo 2004 V40 and the timing belt got contaminated with oil and got loose and both cams jumped on certain position. I took the chance and replaced the timing belt with it's kits after watching your other video and thank God no interference engine and no bent valves. The car started fine but I am having problem installing the old serpentine belt although I followed the routing diagram and tried all possible configuration . Any hint before I buy new drive belt other than the belt got shorting due to cold weather. Thanks

    Most will slip on start up, IF your water pump runs under the cams beneath but center both underneath. it may put tension to save it. Mine did. Mine slipped on startup from being old and never serviced and raced a month after I bought it. Mine is a mitsubishi 6g75 v6 with mivec high compression interference engine. I changed the belt out and the car runs better now than it ever has and pulls ridiculously hard now. My cams are farther apart it goes over cam under waterpump over other cam. That tension is what I think saved Mine. Most 4 cyl are different with close cams with nothing to keep tension in between both the belt goes directly over both. If it slips it'll sound like rubber slapping on plastic like mamma beating ya with a belt turn it off immediately!!!!!!!!! Most times it'll happen on startup, or when you go to slow down. It's not cheap, mitsubishi wanted 2K to do mine. YOU HAVE TO DO IT OR GET IT DONE!!!!! like he said it'll ruin your entire car. I did it all myself. If you are stupid or can't follow directions. DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF!!! and do not tear it apart and then send it to a mechanic, that might be worse. I got all my parts thru domestic gaskets in Boston they were a huge help, they took my actual vin for my car specifically and ran it and got exactly what I needed. It was around $220 for everything. LISTEN TO THIS MAN!!!!! He knows what he's talking about and will save you money. It's crazy how many people have gone way way over and/or don't even have a clue they have to get this done. If you buy a new used car that has a belt, and not a chain if it hasn't been done, offer less and get it done immediately guys!!!!! It's literally the most important thing on the entire car.

    The Tachometer on your dash displays crank speed, not cam speed, if your dash says your engine is doing 2000rpm it means your crank is doing 2000rpm (cams are doing 1000rpm at this engine speed). The gauge does not display cam speed.

    What about a 2002 Subaru Legacy wagon. Is it an inteference type? My car was fine and died as I was driving on the hwy. I coasted over to the berm. Towed it to a collision mechanic. He's fixing it by replacing the belt. He said a spark plugs had some oil on it. Called Subaru dealer he said it just needs a new gasket usually the gasket grommets wear out. Praying my car is fixed by tomorrow 🙏

      @@RobertDIY It is most definitely, absolutely CRIMINAL, that engines are INTERFERENCE. A very simple 5 mm (or less), notch (depression) on the pistons, would prevent these problems. Or, if the cylinder, was a few millimetres (mm) longer. The cost at a dealer to repair, can easily be $5k, or even a backstreet small garage, will easily charge about $2k, just for labour. My 2009, c180, the timing chain just jumped time, and it wouldn't start now, I checked, the teeth on the timing chain gears were worn down.

      I bought a timing chain kit for about £200 pounds, replaced just the chain, checked for compression, and it all worked fine. I did all the work myself, after watching numerous videos. I also upgraded the radio, and fitted a few dashcams:

      @@RobertDIY @Robert DIY chain, and no, it still starts and runs (barely).....can move under its own power (barely, but enough to drive get up onto a tow dolly), needs ample throttle to not stall, cant make it over 4k rpm, vacuum is fucked (power brakes no longer powered, requires lots of leg muscle to get it to brake).
      Was driven about a couple km at first as I thought it might be a bad brake booster leaking vacuum and causing the issue... I was wrong, lol
      PS wow that was a quick response! I really appreciate that, and being willing to help at all.... much love :)

    hi, great video learned a lot about timing belt issue!! have a question have a 2005 honda oddessy were water pump broke, vehicle overheated and shutdown. was in exit lane on the parkway with stop and go turn back drove 2 blocks to side street put water in radiator smoked immediately, let cool off then drove to auto shop one block away. they told me the water pump was leaking which I saw, the car needed the whole timing belt job and no guaranteed engine maybe bad!!! picked up cat today when in idles stats shaking VSA and engine come on and then car shuts off. When on parkway and driving car runs fine up to 60 miles per hour no issue again in local traffic car shakes and idles terrible and sometimes no power when I step on the gas and car shuts off. VSA comes on just before very intermittent?? is engine shot??? not and interference engine vehicle has 150,000 miles Help!!

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, the timing belt did not come loose, just the water pump was leaking. You did overheat the car so you need to test it for a blown head gasket. Really the mechanic should have done that before replacing the timing belt parts. Is the CEL on?

      I've seen on the web where a mechanic fixed an engine to where the timing belt was installed wrong. They didn't replace the head, they reset the timing belt and the car started. Can you answer how that was possible? I've learned a lot from you Sir and some of the other great people her. Thank you so much.

    My honda broke its belt running down the street. put a new belt in and the thing runs right with same power. Mines is a four cyl interference engine so I put a belt on which I know how to do and cost me 25 bucks and I lucked out. With four cyl cars it is often likely the car will run after you change the belt that broke. 6 cyl and above I do not know but my honda runs fine. 25 bucks. He is absolutely right about cheap parts tho. You will wreck your engine in order to save 60 or 80 bucks. Dont do it.

    Strange things are afoot. I am doing a timing belt replacement on our 1996 non turbo sedan with '55' VIN.
    The engine ran fine this is just routine replacement. The camshaft timing marks are set straight up. There are only cam gear indentations (painted) at 12 o'clock when the crank is set to its mark. The top inner timing cover has the inner angled cutouts in it but there is also white paint on it at 12 O'clock.
    I do not understand how it ran so well and got such great mileage for the last 60k set this way.. or if this is just the way this one goes together. Afaik, it is stock and there are no other marks on the gear teeth.
    Things that make you go hmmm. :D Just thought I would post this before I set and release the tensioner. It will get 720° of crank rotation of course prior to starting.
