    Episode Notes:
    1. The Xbox 360 version is used for much of this video. Comparison shots are the actual arcade version running on Nebula Model 2. Saturn and Dreamcast versions running on actual hardware.
    2. My buds and I played Daytona to death in the arcade. We had a local arcade that had 2 Twin units networked together for 4 players. We spent more time trying to wreck one another than actually trying to win the race.
    3. The Japanese version of Daytona Circuit Edition also has a system link option.
    4. The US Netlink version of Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition goes for crazy money. It was only available direct from Sega, and is rare as rocking horse shit.
    5. Every music selection here is from one of the Daytona USA games.
    6. My order of preference for the home console versions go;
Daytona USA(XB360), Daytona USA(SAT), Daytona USA 2001(DC), Daytona USA Circuit Edition(SAT), Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition(SAT).

Daytona USA the arcade game was one of the few games me and my dad could bond over. He knew how to drive manual really well so he always chosen manual gear. I tried it a few times but mostly just chose automatic, and because he knew manual so well! he always with my butt at it😅 rest in peace pops!🙏✌

I feel ya, man. My dad was an arcade operator for 20 years. I learned all my Daytona chops from him. I ended up being better than him and could beat his times on Expert.
Maybe our fathers are in an arcade heaven trading paint on Daytona.

Manual is all about timing and hearing the engine. In Daytona, just watch the tachometer. Also, you don't need the brake in this game with the manual. By gearing down from 4th to 2nd and a quick turn of the wheel will cause a drift.

Man, I remember this time almost being like a blur. I had seen a guy playing this weird driving game, sliding around corners with nothing to see but guard rail whizzing by. I tried to play it and I don't think I even got a single lap in. I later recognized it as Ridge Racer and It became one of my favorite PlayStation games in the release window. What's funny is that I remember Hard Drivin' being in there somewhere and I had spent around $10 playing it, trying (and failing spectacularly) to clear that goddamn loop. I don't remember exactly how long after Ridge Racer I saw Daytona USA. It was kind of amazing how easy it was to sit down in that thing a go like a mad man around the track. Like there really wasn't a learning curve, if you knew how to drive, you could play. A most excellent trip down memory lane SLX, thank you!

I was lucky enough to regularly experience the 8-player version in '94 at our local arcade in Whitestone, New York. Can't remember the name of the place but it was the arcade at the outside shopping center / mall with a Blockbuster Video in it alongside the Van Wyck Expressway. So many great memories of playing it with my brother and friends. It was magical, and the early to mid '90s were especially a great time for video games.

I remember very well the first time I saw the Daytona USA arcade machine. It was early 1999, summer in Brazil. I'm from Paraguay and I was on vacation in a not so big coastal city in Brazil. With my parents and siblings we entered an ice cream shop, and I saw the arcade there. It was incredible, I was 12 years old and I never saw something like that. Keep in mind that here in south america gaming was a bit left behind compared to other parts of the world, so arcades like Daytona USA was something new at the time. And I was there, with my ice cream, watching the demo, hearing the "Daytonaaaa" son over and over, so many times that the song stuck in my head. Sadly, I didn't played it, my parents didn't allowed me to play that time. For so many years I remember the song and always sung in my head, until I finally saw that arcade in my country, was 2002-3. I finally was able to play it, but the steering wheel was a bit damaged. Not matter what, I had a blast. That was the first time that a videogame blew my mind, that's the reason that I remember very well of that "love at first sight".

My favourite arcade game of all time (and I was around for the early 80s stuff). When it gets a bit hairy on the drive home I still start singing ‘Daytonaaaaaaaa!’. No power slides mind you.
I still play this on the PS3 - wish Sega had ported it to the PS4.

I know the Saturn version got railed on a lot and still does to this day, but my earliest memories of gaming as a child include playing Daytona USA on the Saturn, and how magical it was. The raw game play and soundtrack mesmerized me, and I was far too young to care about frame rates, draw distances, and whatever the hell else people find wrong with the port compared to the arcade version. It was one of the formative experiences for me as a gamer, and along with a handful of other genesis and Saturn games, turned me into a Sega fan forever. As I've gotten older, I've been absolutely fascinated with the history and evolution of Sega at home and in the Arcades. Your videos are always awesome and informative, providing so much context I never could have experienced only being born in 1994. Great work as always man!

We had the 8-player setup at COSI in Columbus, OH in the mid-1990s. It was meant to be one of many science exhibits there, where you just paid once to get in and could freely roam about and choose exhibits at will. The COSI workers would show a brief video explaining the physics plus a few pointers ("Slow way down for turn 4" was burnt into our brains after a while.) Then you’d move on to play the middle course together as a group. Or so they intended....
But a group of us would take advantage of the fact that we could keep going back in line over and over, staying at just this science exhibit. The workers there would eventually just skip the video tutorial and just let us play if nobody else joined....
We played it enough to get a good feel for it, and would eventually be able to beat most of the COSI volunteers consistently enough. But there was one guy who was just too good, so we developed our own twisted strategy. One or two of us would be designated to go around the track as the game intended, while the rest of us would be designated crash dummies driving around the track backwards!
Needless to say, the physics of the game didn’t quite account for this scenario very well. :-) We’d avoid our teammates, but would specifically target the pro COSI volunteer for head on collisions. Oftentimes when we had a successful collision, he’d wreck, while our cars would keep going, and even briefly speed up! So much for their science exhibit!
And when that was deemed too cheap to beat the pro COSI volunteer, we had other tactics. If I was fortunate enough to have an empty seat adjacent to me, I could stretch my left leg just enough to drive two vehicles! The intention was to just get that vehicle far enough into the course where the tunnel begins, but I’d let it coast into a blind curve, and then abandon it there. Then I’d focus 100% on my own vehicle...
Sure enough, that parked car on a blind curve in the tunnel was enough to make every unsuspecting player wreck on lap 2, and they’d fly through the ceiling of the tunnel, and then crash back down hard! So much for your physics exhibit, COSI! :-)
I wish I could go back in time and relive that wonderful day we spent at COSI playing Daytona almost non-stop for several hours.

Wanting to try out Sega Rally was the reason I bought a saturn about a year ago, and it's become one of my favourite games, and my saturn has become little more than a Sega Rally machine.
Gameplay is arcade racing perfection, never bettered as far as I'm concerned. The graphics are state of the art in their cubist fashion. Content is so tiny and high quality it's like a caviar tin. The music is as cheezy and good as France's dairy products.

Wow.. This video brought back so many great memories of Me & Friends spending hours playing in linked up multi-cab sets (Had actually never seen that stand up version!) and, really reminds Me of why Sega holds such a special place of reverence for so many. Out of all the times I played Daytona with Friends, the absolute best time had to be on a group trip to Las Vegas when about 8 to 12 of Us played in a linked up race at the Sega arcade inside of the Luxor hotel! That was something truly special that I will always treasure! Genuinely awesome experience period. Also.. Watching those side-by-side comparisons of the Arcade Vs Saturn Original & Arcade Vs Championship Circuit Edition seriously crystalizes something that Tom Kalinske said in an interview on how He wanted to handle the US Saturn launch: He wanted to wait until "96 to launch Saturn. He and SOA knew what all was being done by SOJ and it's developers in Japan, so they wanted to launch with truly great line-up that would position them better against Nintendo & Sony since the Genesis was still doing quite well at the time.. There was no need to rush, but as We all know, that sadly did not happen.

I was never able to play it in an arcade in Germany, because arcades are rated R (18+). So, no juvenile would ever be able to sink some quarters,/ pennies (Pfennige in German) into those lovely machines. It wasn't until I visited London, England, in 1995 when I was able to finally play it in its original form on a real arcade cabinet on Regent St. Until the 360 arcade perfect port came out, I always played it again and again on my beloved Dreamcast.

One of my favorite memories of Daytona USA was back in the mid 2000s when I was at an arcade where you paid a flat rate to get in so all the games were "free". There was an 8 player daytona setup and a large group of people (probably 10-15 or so) that were all taking turns racing. I made a suggestion of a "play til you lose" style tournament where the winner of the race got to keep playing after each round. I ended up winning like 7 or 8 races in a row and didn't have to get up and wait again to play for quite a long time LOL. I forget who finally beat me but they definitely felt good to dethrone me after a ton of consecutive wins.

I was first exposed to the series when I was younger where they had a Daytona USA 2 deluxe cabinet at my local Chuck E. Cheese's, but it was only a 1 player cabinet. I'm sad both places got rid of those cabinets, those games were so fun.

Man this game along with ninja turtles blasting in the arcade was one of the best experiences I had as a kid and I enjoyed the dreamcast version since i didn't have an opportunity to play it on saturn. I might try it out on xbox or ps3 too! Gotta love Daytona!

Here in Ireland I only ever experienced the twin setup for a very long time, until I went to America when I was 13, and we went to Epcot. They had a 8 car deluxe setup running constantly and where doing a winner stays on setup competition.
Managed to get a go and remember this guy who was wearing a 90s hawian style shirt was doing commentary and an old boy in the end in sunglasses and a cowboy hat lol. Lol.
Was a full race on 3 7 speedway, and if I'm honest I was winning and lost it on the home straight when I dropped attention thinking I was gonna win and bounced of the sonic Wall to hard and ended up in the grass opposite, but I still came 2nd.
What I didn't know until I was leaving that it was Richard Petty in the cowboy hat taking part to premote the Richard Petty / Disney nascar experience and got my photo taken with him and a quick chat.
He was surprised to see a young guy from Belfast knew of Nascar never mind who he was when I burst out embarrassingly I told my dad he drives the 43 stp car. Lol. Ah to be 13 again.
Will always hold that as my best memory that Sega exposed me to nascar as young man and that chance experience of meeting him was amazing.

Daytona Saturn prepared me for the arcade version. I knew which turn had to be taken with a lower gear or which one you shouldnt take on power slide
When my friends and i went to the arcade cabinets, i demolished them! It was a lot of fun. Then doing all 3 circuits at first place while everyone was watching you mastering Daytona is timeless. 2020 and this game its still giving money to arcade owners.

I saw this game first on the Sega Saturn. And I loved it! Soundtrack was my highlight (as were most Sega soundtracks around this time imo).

I still remember the very first time I saw the arcade version, it was back on Long island at the huge arcade connected to a Nathan's fast food place and I was utterly blown away. That's something I think is lost on people today, it's hard to grasp what a quantum leap in graphics this game was compared to everything else that had been available at that time.
Oddly enough, I think the Dreamcast version often gets a bad rap. I loved that version of the game and I think it's got by far the best Daytona soundtrack, some of the original music on the newer tracks (including music they replaced in the CCE edition tracks) is fantastic. Yeah, the control doesn't really feel like the arcade game, but it's got so much extra stuff and once you get used to its control scheme I think it's great.
I definitely appreciate the version that came out on the PS3 and Xbox360, but I think I actually still enjoy the Dreamcast version more. I kinda miss all the extra tracks from the DC version in the newest release.

You can never escape Daytona USA. Even after the heat death of the universe, there's going to be at least one Daytona USA cabinet still working somewhere out there.

Daytona USA (arcade) is one of my all-time favorites. I even purchased an Xbox 360 solely for the purpose of picking up the arcade-perfect port. The Saturn port was quite a let down, sadly. However, the Dreamcast rendition, though it didn't attempt a true 100% arcade conversion, was a solid game and I got a lot of play time from it. One thing I will give to the Saturn version though is the music quality. The Saturn port got a revised, updated recording of Takenobu Mitsuyoshi's glorious music tracks and, in my opinion, it is the best version of the score, beating the arcade original and also the Dreamcast's remixed versions. To this day, I can be caught driving in my car happily listening to "Sky High."

I didn't get to play Daytona until later 2017, arcades weren't much of a thing where I live in the UK and were eventually phased out before 2000 so the most I ever saw of the game was in the mid 90s in gaming mags back in my teen years. I played the 360 version on the Xbox One and unlocked all of the achievements, it was an alright game that has aged a fair bit but was enjoyable enough.
I could fairly see how impressive it was in it's heyday.

I didn't get a chance to play this game when it came out but the local Dave and Buster's had the epic 8 cabinet network link. It definitely holds up very well and I am glad that I got to experience it.

Disney Quest had the mega network version. That had its own line and was pretty busy every time I went. They had cameras for capturing reactions of the players whilst driving (that was shown on the TV monitors).

Great video as always. One of my all time favorite games. Also one of the main reasons I bought a Saturn at launch. I'm hoping they do a port for the Switch similar to what they did with Virtua Racing with additional support for local wireless and Pro controller support in multiplayer. It'd be awesome to do local 8 player on 2 switches via local wireless.

Daytona Circuit Edition for the Japanese Saturn supports the Netlink-type system link for 2-player, side-by-side, arcade-style racing. This setup requires a phone line simulator. The SegaHolic has a cool video showing how to do it.

Nice, my co-workers would go to the local Dave and Buster's, get on the 8 player arcade set up and race. The guys that were in the last 4 places by the end of the first lap would all turn around and start racing backwards trying to crash into the top 4 cars.
I seem to recall there was an easter egg involving the 3rd track and the Jeffrey statue, I don't recall if it was in the arcade or on the Saturn or both.

This game is a monument in gaming history, a true classic. It's almost as if it was TOO ahead of its time, because it was like a DC/PS2 game when the Snes and Genesis were still kicking ass in their latter years. When it came out on Saturn, it was as if it was an entire hardware generation behind, just incredible.
