I think that there’s a decent place in the market for Sega to revitalize their old arcade racers. I love what we have now with more realistic games/sims like Dirt Rally 2.0 and ACC, but there’s just not much in the way of good releases for arcade-style racers that have come out in the last 15 years or so. Sega made some of the best of those in the old days and are well-positioned to revive some of those IPs, maybe targeting a lower price point in the $20-$40 range, with releases on Steam and current gen consoles. New releases not just for Crazy Taxi, but for Daytona, Sega Rally, and maybe even Hang On GP could do very well as lower budget releases.
Daytona USA Championship Edition its similar to Wii Sports Club, both the third entry, both try to enter as a new version of the first game, both released in different conditions (the first USA was ported instantly and this one hasn't), and both ignored by most people.
I've been a fan of the Daytona series for decades, and happy to see Sega continue making racing games. On the flip side this Daytona 3 (Championship) remake has a few disturbing trends. The primary color palette of the original first two Daytona's was swapped out for a much warmer color palette - to me this is one of the many defining characteristics of the series. Secondly putting your opponents on the left field of the monitor takes away from the immersion and your attention from playing the game. What is the purpose of seeing your opponents name or where they stack in the line-up while racing? It's only your goal to pass them. Otherwise it looks excellent to me; I still prefer the original Takenobu Mitsuyoshi soundtrack but I'm just happy to see Sega development making these games.
I still remember seeing Daytona USA in an arcade back in 1994 and being amazed little kid seeing graphics I've never seen before. game was way ahead of is time
Nice updated version indeed (didn't know they made a 3rd game). I notice that the new version's car does not "shake" up and down like the original does (the shaking accelerates as the car goes faster, too). Not sure if I prefer the no-shake, maybe. In any case, I hope they bring this version to the PC in the coming months as they bring their older franchises back to life.
This looks great. I hope that they use this as a starting point for other games of it's era for the modern crowd. I know Sega Rally had a third outing but i would like to see how this could be used on Sega Rally 2 as to me it's the last time we got that feel of the originals soul, the third just does not do it (the evo one). This could be a chance for more Model Three stuff, like what was promised in the Dreamcast days but not the originals a new vision. A new energy. 😆
I have played both arcade versions and the cars handle nothing like the original, genuinely huge departure. Things like dropping from 4th to 1st/2nd without lifting off the gas pedal to induce a powerslide doesn't work the same. Would be fine for a new player but for a 40-something guy looking for some teenage nostalgia it makes the game really awkward to play.
One piece of feedback that Sega got (and thankfully took into account) from the location test: Daytona is a game where high-level play needs an H-pattern shifter rather than a sequential shifter. You need to be able to instantly shift from 4th gear all the way down to 2nd or 1st to drift around tight corners.
Seriously, Namco needs to get serious about Ridge Racer. Because Cruis'n, Hot Wheels racing game, LEGO racing game, F-Zero, and even Top Gear (Top Racer in Japan), Crazy Taxi are back. Even San Francisco Rush, OutRun might return. I saw that Digital Eclipse and Atari were interested in San Francisco Rush, and there was Outrun 2 from SEGA, Sumo Digital at British Racing Greats 2023.
@@robertmcmahon4549 Yes. The replayability is great in it. I completed all tracks, but i repeat tracks now and then including getting missing secrets. I bought it on Switch, but i also have it installed on my Lenovo Go PC Handheld. Running at 60 FPS there too.
Having tried this on a PC it runs incredibly well with a wheel and I would quite happily fork out for a proper release. I don't think they will do it though as it would cannibalise their arcade business in Japan.
At this they should release a home console and pc port of the game, their arcade buildings and business in Japan had been sold and renamed to gigo arcade.. heard one of the renamed buildings had been closed and renamed to bandai Namco... So taito, Bandai namco and others old school arcade centres are the only ones in the domestic arcade business..
What sucks about the Daytona Championship USA at my local D&B is set to suck credits in a non-fun way. It's a struggle to place first on the first track (which I have done) due to the AI being absolutely brutal, and it's impossible to clear the second track because checkpoints don't give you enough time. It feels as if whoever set it up assumes the game will let you just credit in and get more time, but the reality is it resets the track.... That you cannot finish... And as someone who has access to a Daytona USA cab (and used to have a Daytona USA 2 cab), I definitely should not be struggling to get through any of it. I got it set up on my PC and was happy to finally see it all through.
Funny easter egg: If you press either gas or brake in arcade or 360, you get the credits to show! The roulette game doesn't work anymore in Daytona 3! If they made the body smaller and make the wheels pop out, it'd actually fit the actual camera view! While OG Daytona felt spacious because of the track being BIG and the cars SMALL and have a sense of speed and length of the track, Daytona 3 feels overpopulated even with the same track size and shorter because of the bigger cars! IMO
Played this at Lucky Strike at Assembly Square in MA. 6 machines hooked up. Wanted to share a pic but I guess TH-cam doesn’t let you. My friends and I spent countless quarters on the original. Hoping they do a new one for consoles now that Sega is reviving their classics.
I preffer original colors , and the speed sensation of the original , the new one needs some kind of motion blur to mimic the streched textures that road has on original
