The more I hear Brian Deegan speaking the more I like him.
"There were ambulances there, thats why you'd try it" hahahaha. These old school freestylers were a different breed. Learning tricks pretty much knowing your gonna get hurt cause foam pits were a dream at that point
They had foam pits
@@johnnybgood774 I'm talking pre foam pits, and at the very start you had to be a baller to have a foam pit...hence me saying "foam pits were a dream at that point". Thanks though

I still have the first Crustys I ever bought on vhs. Lol. Still get pumped watching those golden oldies. And got my first realization of what a bad ass tuff mtha fkr BD 38 is when I bought and watched Disposable Hero's .
Papa Deegs
You are the man.
You made history and had a big hand in creating a sport that gets your adrenaline pumping just by watching it as a spectator. Thankyou.
Cary Hart’s backflip anybody? Was incredible.
The 360 is such an underrated trick on a dirtbike
I think it’s underrated because, depending on the angle of the rotation and the angle of the camera, people can barely see what is actually happening.
I was there when he pulled the 360 crowd went insane! My dad is in the video in the stands in the middle of the stairs with his arms up. I'll never forget that. His west coast chopper bike was sick!
Yeah i remember that bike, he had it all painted. That was a favourite for a long time
@Ryan L he's on the stairs so yes you can see him. Not in the seating area.
You should number your videos on these important interviews. Part 1, part 2, part3... etc.... PLEEEEZ
Brain Deegan is truly a cool guy! Took time out to get a picture with my 4 year old son and him and his wife were nice as can be, down to earth....
He's so honest. Love this dude 😎
Respected Deegan for pulling off the 360 first but respect for Travis for doing it better then anyone. Dudes couldn’t do it as flat as TP. Nate adams was almost like a regular backflip, Deegan’s was really good, but TP’s was insane
Travis 360's were allways the most badass 360's, he had so much style, nobody could beat him back than.
Bilko had them down pat aswell
Those days in freestyle were gnarly. I was fortunate enough to be working in the industry in those days, sometimes "athlete manager " at things like Dew Tour. The risk levels were so high that I sometimes had a hard time watching dudes ride.
that 360 of Deegans was anything but clean
Deegan definitely paid his dues learning to backflip.
Deegan is a total stud, but Pastrana is the GOAT...
“Because the ambulances were there.” That’s crazy to think about.
Thats like legit action sport thinking
Lot of people died on the way to the hospital back then after some knarly back yard shit! If the medics were on site, much higher chances of survival after hitting hard.
He ripped a kidney off doing a backflip at bam's house a easy backflip but the wind got him and ate shit.
You got to have a I don't give a fuck button too do today's freestyle tricks.
2 years ago I used to think the same as what Brian stated. "What's left ? What else can the free style guys do any more ? "We've seen it all now"
I dont watch or even own a tv anymore for yrs now. So sadly I've missed out on seeing x games or fmx for quite some time.
Fast forward to 2023. I saw on you tube a guy do a superman seat grab while doing a backflip. A guy pull off a rock solid while doing a front flip, triple back flip, double front flips.....and Im like are you fn kidding me ?
Wow..!!!
Mind blown. Are we at the peak yet ? Idk but I like the big air bag landing ramps or whatever they are cause these athletes now are pulling insane shit could end really badly. Brians era of guys were risking life and limb also and Im just a fan in awe and admiration of these stuntmen and the racing too is at such insane speed.
Progression of the sport ? Yeah man. 4 reelz. I luv it.
Love Deegan's perspective he has now, and hearing it 🤘💚
Deegan is a fucking Legend 🤘Carey Hart had a foam pit even before Travis I believe
What a legend! I witnessed myself almost everything he talks about here: 1st 360, 1st double backflip at X-Games, these were the times! FMXers were more of rockstars then athletes back then: form lifestyle to paying their dues, I mean look how many people died in the sport in 00's. Now they're all dialed in the foam pit and the contest looks more like a well scripted movie. But back then it was so much thrill, I remember that. I think fmx became more about style and self-espression these days as opposed to raw gnarliness then. Look at the Monster Best whip contests, Slay video edits, Tom P video parts, it's all become more creative and more refined I guess, where you can just enjoy watching it and want to ride your bike.
Deegan is an honorable man.
how come you aren't uploading full podcasts on youtube anymore ?
Gonna be a riot when Haiden races his first Anaheim #38 💯
He won't be 38, it'll be a 3 digit number until he scores enough national points to gain and pick an empty 2 digit... unless he wins a title then he'll have a pick of a single digit as a permanent number, or have the option to keep his 2 digit number if desired. So he'll probably be running the 338 like Zacho and J-Law once did. If he can't get 38 later then he should be like travjs and keep the 3 digit number permanently like TP did with 199 even after winning 125 supercross and outdoor title. I kinda dig some 3 digit numbers. J-law always ran the 338.
I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WAS THE WAY IT WAS EDITED BUT IT WAS CRAZY SEEING BRIAN TELL A STORY AND HIS REACTION WOULD JUST BE A PAUSE AND RIGHT ONTO THE NEXT QUESTION😂😂😂😂. WHEN HE TALKED ABOUT DOING THE 360 I WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY GEEKED UP AT THAT STORY BUT NO EMOTION ON HIS END 😂😂
Is he in the studio with you ? Or is he in another country?
remember that show m80?
360s were the coolest trick at the time. Now it seems riders can do them with ease. Bilko probably has the best 360.
Only five guys have ever done them, so no.
@@yamahakid450f Uhh, WHAT?! Deegan, Pastrana, Faisst, Bilko, Josh Sheehan, Jarryd McNeil, Lusk "R.I.P", Taka, Tom Pages, Nate Adams, Eli Sherwood, Mark Monea and I'm definitely missing a few more.
I always loved Bilko"s 3's. I would look up the winning run at last year's X games ( the one at Axel Hodges compound). I forget his name but homeboy did a 360 literally like a bmx 360 over a 75ft gap. Never thought I'd see it but it doesn't get any flatter than how this guy did it... Actually ill just put a link here lol th-cam.com/video/NvJitQyn9G4/w-d-xo.html

I’m not a dude who gets star-struck. But, just as a human, I relate to and have a very similar outlook on life and energy to Brian. I’ve kinda picked up on it but listening to his points I’m thinking 💭 damn, exactly. I’ve thought about those exact same things. He’s definitely a fucking rad guy, dad and innovator. Someone to emulate.

FMX isn't even fun to watch anymore. I remember being so hyped each year to watch Freestyle and best trick at Xgames. Once everyone started doing double backflips and front flips I lost interest
yep Red Bull X Fighters killed the sport, every trick a backflip variation or you wouldnt podium.
surprised hes not pumping up Raha . top MM guy

Not sure if, Deegan, will respond... Though, I must mention calling Metzger about the very 1st #IFMA event in 2000 Little Rock, Arkansas. And getting to spend time with Deegan, Metzger, Twitch, Mad Mike Jones, Cliff Addiftontai ( I tried to spell it 😂), Bartrom, ect... Was even in the riders meeting with the promoters at the Hotel, talking about how #FMX is to be organized. Because, it hadn't ever happened before.

😀gypsy gang!
I always wondered if it was Gypsy Gang or Gypsy Game. Gypsy Gang makes more sense to me!
What is left !!!! ? A rider flip and rejoin the bike
That's been a thing for a king time... in fact a rider just did what you're talking about in the middle of a backflip.... so he did a backflip body varial while the bike was upside down above him
@@yamahakid450f cool thks.4 the info. Im old and behind lol
I remember a time when derfsn stole 199 trick. Jus sayin
There will never be a quad backflip to dirt or a air bag,the dirt-bike the ramp would have to very very big the risk isn't worth it because your not just going to break bones.
Dana Creech
No disrespect to Deegs but the reason he had the first 360 was because Travis had the better score in prequalifing and got to go last in the finals.
But it was still an awesome night for the dark side and FMX 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
It was so gnarly but deegans 360 reminds me of a whip flip or under flip, travis got his completely flat and Brian stole travis's idea when he saw travis trying it into the pit. That's why people wouldn't let anyone record agter that year so their new tricks going into X wouldnt get leaked and stolen. His run was before Travis which is why he pulled it first... travis, Bilko, and Adam's were true 360's not taking anything from Brian, he pulled it first and can claim that right, but it was never flat like those other guys and to get it flat is a whole different level of gnarly... I hate regular flips so trying to carve a ramp and pulling while looking over my left shoulder to do a 3 always fucked with me so I never learned one, I nearly missed the pit on multiple occasions. A whip flip is similar to the naked eye but you don't have to carve like a flat 3, it's more like Brian's version and closer in technique to a backflip. Travis would carve from the left, and the front wheel would be cranked to the left all the way to the stopper at the very top right corner of the ramp, its so gnarly. There's a reason why only 5 people have done it, Thomas pages has it too.
That trick you either land fine, or 9 times outta 10 when it goes wrong it's going slam you on your head for a nap. Like travis in 04 xgames, TP got lucky when he went off the back before trying it again.

I'm not a deegan fan at all but I respect him to some extent
That's the most back handed compliment I think I've ever heard lmfao
🎉❤
Awkward pause after deegan talks every time
Except I don’t consider that a 360 it’s a little bit of a whipped back flip please stop calling it a 360
I think they call it an off axis flip now
The bikes does a 360 so everyone calls it a 360 your not gonna get a completely straight 360 off of a ramp or dirt jump you just don’t have enough time to completely even out
Dude go watch this 360 he’s talking about him and Travis did legit 360s
I don't know who s call it el360
It's Nate Adams and a lot of the other guys that were doing inverted backflips, Deegan and Travis here did proper 360's. Today Luc Ackermann is the best I've seen for 360's.
