Competing at this level requires a price be paid. It’s tough, but has many rewards. This is not new. These people are often dedicated athletes, work very hard, but are not heroes, not necessarily courageous, and not every instance requires major press coverage or public pats -on-the-back. Rest up, recoup, move on.

My heart is broken for her. I’ve never heard of OTS but it totally makes sense and I bet you I had this my senior year. I struggled so hard the entire year all my swims were off constantly. My body felt like it was broken.
Hopefully she can still make it in the 50.
She is born for this sport. She’s a natural swimmer. If she doesn’t go to Tokyo there is NO doubt in my mind she will make a comeback and she will be just fine. Team Simone 4Lyfe.

This is a reason why Cyclists take 2-4 weeks off during the off season, and gradually build back up to prevent burning out

@@alvinfrias9197 it’s like swimmers just pride themselves on working so hard they forget that you need to RECOVER, to get better. There is also the story of the young woman runner who was over trained by ( I believe it was ) the Nike team. They are also seeing this in women’s gymnastics, recent article about it.
Elite Young woman athletes need to be taught to listen to their bodies and speak up for themselves.
And for the male reader who is about to criticize my post , remember that Tom Brady and Trevor Bauer have been well documented as training the way they feel is best for them, not “the way it has always been done”.

Nearly every swimmer in his squad had severe declines in race times despite massive increases in training loads. We just finished junior Australian nationals and we aren’t in a position to shift away from this coach but as parents (who know there child) we took the decision to drop sessions in half and give her a choice in training outside the pool. We will see how her times go but as a parent who cares. All I know is she is happy and once again loving her training schedule. Her “coach” won’t talk to her as he is disappointed she has dropped so many distance sessions. Good coaches listen to there athletes, bad coaches bully, yell and make excuses. He is the later.

By the time I was 15 years old I wasn’t dropping anymore and was only adding an insane amount of time. I hope some coaches read this or just swimmers in general, this video has struck very close to home I also had dealt with overtraining. To the point where I have had to deal with a serious shoulder injury for the last 1.5 years and have still not been able to comeback fully. Overtraining is a serious problem in this sport as well as running and other endurance based sports. Everyone has different symptoms, they can be as simple and small as just some fatigue that gets better when you start your workouts. To what I have had to deal with which is an overuse injury. I do not think swimmers should swim 7,10,12 times per week all the time year around. While there are times that yes it can be beneficial, it should not be kept up for very long. Yet many teams and elite athletes will train with huge amounts of volume for months. Periodization is really lacking in this sport.Maintaining a feel for the water is important but resting and recovering from training should always be the priority and will decrease the chance of developing OTS or injury.

I barely even know anything about swimming but I'm so proud of her. It's so hard to come in front of people like this, many of which will probably judge her for being emotional and talking about her struggles when physical and mental health. More athletes need to speak on this because it's completely valid and human.

As someone who hates taking rest days, this has been a bit of a wake up call. Even right now my pulse is quite high... I would love to hear more about the details of her training that lead her to this. Or maybe because she is now going on 25 her body can't recover and take the same beating as she could when she was 18. I know that's definitely the case for me. Lots more easy days. But I really hope she can turn this around. Good luck Simone!

Although this could be either a temporary or a permanent situation, I am sure God has a better plan for you. Mental health is our mind's longer-term fuel. We have to take it seriously in the good times and maintain our mental health so that we can keep replenishing this resource at a high level, and sync our minds and bodies to achieve the best of ourselves when it counts. If we can overcome our Mental Health after it torments us, we can slay our dragons and be stronger examples of ourselves.

Before I clicked the video I could see done all over her face. Yes our bodies are the first doctors before we visit any other human being to consult about how we fell.
My grandmother found cancer cells in her breast and it took A COUPLE OF YEARS before the doctors could feel what she could feel and then a couple more month before the camera could locate anything. My grandmother had to constantly reiterate the lump until the camera saw it and the doctors were more open to helping. All this to say, you know your body before anyone else. Had my grandmother not kept being vocal, it would still be growing and slowly killing her. No one can tell you what your body tells you. You have one and when it’s done, you are done. ❤️
Because of this honest interview, I see strong and bold because you spoke up. Spiritually, I see a beautiful young woman shinning and telling her story. Your unique story isn’t over and you just freed a lot of people from these same questions, setbacks and issues with coaches, doctors and all in between.
