I don't remember watching this initial interview with Connie but she soon became one of the most reliably fun guests Dave would have on the show. There was a lot of interaction with the personnel from NBC News (naturally) that was highly enjoyable.

Dave is referring to Jessica Savitch's job. Connie replaced Savitch on the Saturday "Nightly News" program. In fact this episode aired 2 days after Savitch last anchored "Nightly News" before Connie took it over. The backstory: Savitch had turned down the offer to front "Sunrise" because she thought NBC was trying to bury her in the mornings. Bad career move on her part. Savitch also thought if she took "Sunrise" she would lose the primetime "Digest" spots and her Saturday "Nightly News" anchor spot. Much to her shock NBC gave everything to Connie Chung. Savitch was reduced to anchoring a few "Digests" a week. She was slated to takeover the Sunday "Nightly News" anchor role in January 1984 but sadly she drowned in October 1983 in a freak auto accident.
