    I had to come back to this for a second viewing bc I didn't understand the relay.... And why you need it. I argued about it with my self if I needed it or not... Lol then I learned about them and well now I'm back. Great videos. I have a '70 scout in which I'm doing my own mods to. In fact I spotted your chain step on one of your rigs... I'll be doing that this weekend. Once again great vids....

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nate Karr you dont have to have the relay but most switches arent designed to carry much of a load and they will go out, not to mention having 12volts coming into the cab all over the place is not a good idea and may lead to shorts/fires.

    I must say your videos are really great. You can put things simply and you go straight to the point, I really dig it. That's what the "jeep spirit" is all about.
    I just wanted to ask you one question though : why do you connect the wire that powers the switch to the battery and not to the fuse box (like you did in the video about the dual batteries wiring)? Couldn't you have done that? And if not, why?

    Great tutorial! Really good if someone has never done this before. But just a little wisdom, always disconnect your negative terminal when doing electrical work! I once shorted a ratchet across terminals while removing a negative to do some work, it welded the socket onto the ratchet, and welded the mechanism in the ratchet solid. Just a little advice.

    Best instruction I've found so far. I am having a problem with CREE LED lights and need to better understand the need for a "relay" since the lights came with no instructions other than RED is positive and Black is negative. My rocker switch is the same as yours and the LED light is on when the outside LED lights are off... Can't figure out the wiring issue.

    • @agentorange1485
      @agentorange1485 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think of the relay as the actual on/off switch, while the switch inside the car is like a remote control for the relay. You could theoretically wire it exactly the same way you wire a light switch in your home, but then the switch and the cables to it probably would need to be thicker, and since the car only has 12 V (compared to 110-230 V at home, depending on what country you live in), you would also lose a lot of power because of the longer cables. With a relay, the power can go a shorter way from the battery to the lights, and the switch just controls the relay's on/off.

    Don't forget to check local laws when installing. Some states require covers, some require being wired into the brights or dims (depends on the state). Some have limits on the number of lights you can have.
    When buddy put lights on his truck, he used a solenoid designed to run a heater on a school bus, lol. Needless to say, it handled the current draw fine. ;)

    Hi, Thanks a lot for the video, quite informative indeed.
    I have a basic question bit this is my first time to try and install lights myself. Just wanted to know if there will be any problems if I extend the length of any of the wires as I will be installing them on the car roof while my battery is under the passenger seat. Also what type of wires to be used for extension and where to ground the brown wire?
    Sorry for long question.

    hey matt, thanks so much for your work and teaching. Im a beginner and am attempting to connect 2 small blue light emregency LEDs to a switch and my battery with no relay. Do you think I require one? I believe they are low amps and small. If I do not require one, can you model out the wiring diagram? I would assume with no relay it'd be even more simple. Thank you so much for all you do.

    look for a 12v SPST relay. (single pole, single throw) The typical 30/40 amp relays will do for a pair of lights up to 150w each which is a lot. There are a few specific cases where a pre-made harness is wired for a dual 87 relay (Hella and KC do this on some of their harnesses). YOu will know your harness needs a dual 87 relay if your lights come on separately. One light turns on when the switch is OFF, then the other light comes on when the switch is turned ON.
