- in 1930 producer Varric Frissell secured funding to create a feature film adventure about newfoundland's annual seal hunt. He gathered a team of technical experts aboard the ss Viking and set off to capture this arctic struggle with as much authenticity as possible the resulting film the viking originally known as White Thunder was to be the first Canadian made feature film with sound and the world's first movie with sound shot on location. By 1931 friselle had completed the majority of the film but unhappy with the product he decided to return to newfoundland to shoot some additional footage this unfortunate decision proved to be fatal and what resulted was the worst disaster in cinematic history.

My goodness I am going to see a film documentary about this event next Wednesday evening. Thank you so much for posting this. As a Newfoundlander this means a lot to me.
Amazing Film
Pretty interesting, such a good vid 👍🏻
Thanks - I love researching these videos, but it's difficult to get traction with an audience in You Tube. Hopefully more people start to discover them so I can continue digging into more interesting topics :)
Great content man!
Thanks! Just getting started on this channel, but can't wait to bring you more dark tales!
Since this 1 made history it will be difficult to match, Howard Hawks' brother & several others died stunt flying, made Mary Astor a widow.
