After the war Dutch SS volunteers were dispised or even hated. Only a few years ago I discovered that quite a lot of them voluntereed because of their strong anti-communist beliefs. Some of these former SS volunteers later became very valuable warriors during the UN deployment in Korea while concealing their SS background.
I think we at least owe them something for that.

Dutch soldiers tortured and killed millions of innocent civilians. They were true cowards. that's why I enjoyed watching them and the Germans with their little white flags surrendering to the Americans.

I heard some American person claim there were some former Waffen-SS in US Army uniform in Korea because they knew how to fight a Communist army that was using Soviet tactics, strategies and fighting styles while UN forces were still too small in numbers to put up a proper fight.

One of the probably toughest german soldiers, Hans Dorr, was in in the Wiking division. He was awarded the knights cross with oak leaves and swords. He also won the close combat clasp in silver with gold likely possible. He was wounded 16 times and died in the last offensive to liberate budapest.

My mother's father was kia in mid 7/43 during , and in the "Battle of Kursk " . He was a major in the 2nd Waffen SS Div. " Das Reich "! Her uncle a colonel in The Luftwaffe was a fighter pilot in a Focke Wolf 190( FW190 ) was kia . He was shot down near Anzio , Italy early 3/44.
Ironic my grandpa , on Dad's side, was in US of As 82nd A/B Division , and some , very hesitant told his nightmarish experiences from Normandy , and the blood soaked fields of grim fighting in those hedgerows , his experience in the near disaster in Holland in "Operation Market Garden " , in which the British Paratroopers lost nearly 5-7000 men with 3000 barely making back to Allied lines. The USA 101st and 82nd A/B Divisions faired slightly better , but couldn't take full advantage of a consumate xing of the Rhine , River to get a foothold in Nazi- Germany. Casualties were costly and rapidly rising. The Nazi- German determined , finatical , harrowing counterattacks were non-stop . Both Nazi - and Allied casualties were high ; savage fighting from the North Sea to the Mediterranean .
Grandpa was idered to the Ardennes ( mid 12/44 to early 2/ 45 was "The Battle of the Bulge where nearly 20000 USA troops perished , and about 1000 Brits fell too ; altogether Allies sustained 80000 casualties , and Nazis about 140000 casualties). GrandpA was wounded when the vehicle was in , jeep, hit a mine killing driver , and soldier behind him , wounding my grandpappy , and dude behind him . Both laid in a snow field until , luckily , because Waffen SS colonel Joachim Pieper was in area, he and his compatriot picked up by an American patrol. If was Joachim Pieper he would of been killed , same accountable actions done to murdered American sdiers @ Malmedy.

My fathers cousin, a Finnish winter war veteran(Border Guard Jaeger (Sissi) in Finnish Lapland, joined this unit.
    He was a "Sharfuhrer".
He did that because of his hatred against the Soviet Bolsheviks.
He lived (just like most of my relatives on my fathers side) only about 5km from the Soviet border.
He also joined the Finnish Lapland war, against the Germans.
I asked him once if he didn't feel ashamed for all of a sudden start shooting at your former friends, basically.
    He just replied.
He wasn't fighting these wars, so he could find new friends.
There is no place for personal feelings or what kind of politics your "brothers in arms" believed in.
He fought toghether with the Waffen SS 6:th Gebirgs-Division Nord, but obviously on the Finnish side.
I also want to tell you guys, that most of my relatives that lived during ww2, as a child or an adult had ONLY good things to say about these guys.
Its quite crazy if you think about that the group was made out of former Concentration Camp guards.
The children always got candy's /chocolate.
They where remembered as gentleman and they wasn't into looting, like the RED Soviet Bolshevik bastards that was sent to Finland to free it's people from the horrors of capitalism.
They whdre seen as criminals, basically all of them.
My grandfather a Winter war and continuation war veteran wanted to remind me to never trust no Soviets or do not ever believe that the Russians are like we, or the rest of us Europeans.
They will go into "robot mode" if some dictator in Kreml gave them orders to attack any country..
It didn't matter if they didn't really liked that guy in office, and spent their days on laughing at that dictators lies.
But the day this dictator, let's call him Putler the Dwarf.
The day this leader starts to talk about how evil and that all of them are criminals, and that is the point from where these Soviets /Russians decide to belive in every single word of his... Even if they where laughing at that exact same leader just a couple of days ago.
    Hate to say it.
Seems like he knew them quite well, in the end. 😢

My father-in-law was in the 5th SS Wiking Division. He was a young 17 year old Frenchman with Prussian and Polish parents when he joined and was a hauptscharfuhrer in a heavy company when he was 19 at the end of the war. Look guys... if you are an English speaker, feel free to say “Viking” Division. When the Germans say “Wiking” it is the phonetics of their language. In their ears, in their minds, they are saying and hearing “Viking”. So when you say “Wiking” over and over in English, no offense, it sounds ridiculous. It was NOT a division filled with people who spoke like Elmer Fudd, Ok? It is the “Viking” division, with a ‘Vee’ sound at the beginning. Don’t say it in German if you speak English. Say it correctly. It is the 5th SS Division Viking.

The Finns weren't the only German allies to complain about the activities of the Wiking Division. While it was on the Mius Front in early 1942, its was the subject of complaints from Austrian General Eglseer of 4th Mountain Division for its indiscipline in rear areas. Similar complaints came from General Turanec of the Slovak Rapid Division. There is also reportedly a book by a Swedish volunteer that is less than flattering about the Wiking Division, though I have not seen it personally.

The 5th ss wiking division had their moments of glory/hours of pain. Eventually being overwhelmed by the Russian armies. They made the correct decision to surrender to the Americans.

No you don't! I have many family members who fought in the Wehrmacht and also one in the Waffen-SS. These families were crushed when of 6 sons only 1 survived the war.
My grandfather grew up in the ruins of Germany without Father because he fell "für Führer und Vaterland den Heldentot gefallen!" I have seen the pictures of my grand-grandfather which were done every year at his home holiday. He started the war as a joyful happy young men freshly married. Every year in the war he got slimmer and the shadows under his eyes got darker. The last photo he looked like a zombie without any traces of happiness and joy left. You can see in his face the dark things he has seen disillusioned by the war and the propagandistic lies that got fed to him. He could not recover his soul and shortly after he fell in early 1945!
In a letter to my grand-grandmother it was clear that he did not intend to come back and actually embraced the thought of finally dying... 😢
Do not wish to live in that time, it produced only broken people and families and the trauma is still visible in families today.
I recently asked my grandfather who grew up in post war Germany about his father and he started to cry like a little boy. My grandfather was all his life at the the Bundeswehr and he was a hard as stones guy but it broke my heart seeing him weap about his father he only seen twice before he fell....

Many of these people were seen as traitors and was punished after the war when they returned home. They had served the country that had occupied their own country.
Many thought they got off too lightly only having to serve 2-3 years in prison and loose some of their civil rights. They were shunned by their neighbours and family the rest of their lives. They remain a shameful part of our history.
They are interesting to read about and several of them have shared their experiences and stories. I have read several of their books. I have sympathy for some of them, but in the end they made the wrong choices even if they were young and naive. I think there should have been more of an opportunity for redemption in a humanist capasity but then again I have never been traumatised by occupation or war. There was a burning anger back then.
There were injustices done to many people that did not deserve it. My grandfather helped a german soldier that refused to be a part of the occupation of my country.
First the soldier was imprissoned by the other germans and he sat in jail to the war was over. And when the war was over he got arrested by my government and sentenced to a new jailtime. My grandfather saw that the german soldier had made the right choice but was being wrongly punished for that. My grandfather supported and helped that soldier for the rest of his life to try to make up for what he had suffered of injustice after the war.
