  • In search of the Preseli Bluestones of Stonehenge.
A walk back in time over the remote Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.
This rugged area now seems sparse, but you can see the signs of human activity dating back thousands of years if you look carefully.
They are also known as the Preseli Mountains although the highest peak is only 536 metres.
One of its most famous claims is that it’s the source of many of the bluestones found at Stonehenge, 180 miles away.
I started the walk at the foot of the Iron Age Hillfort in the Preseli Hills near the village of Crymych (SN 165 332). It is only a small lay by which is big enough for about 4 cars.
Foel Drygarn can be seen for miles around, it dates from the iron age but within the inner defences are three Bronze Age burial mounds.
At the base of the hillfort is the Golden Road which crosses the Preseli Hills it is an ancient route that was established in the prehistoric period.
Walking along west along this route you can see many rocky outcrops including Carn Menyn but one of these, Carn Goedog has recently been identified as the main source for the spotted dolerite bluestones used at Stonehenge. These Stonehenge bluestones were quarried about 5000 years ago.

Oxen and sledge will move most boulders. I'm a drystone waller and sometimes I use large boulders. I often use a block and tackle which I suppose would be equaled by ten Oxen easily

Should have tried tapping some of the stones up there, they ring like a bell!

One theory is that the stones were taken to the coast and then floated on barges up the Channel and then up the river Avon. Tributaries of the river Avon come to about 20 miles of Stonehenge :)

Yes, I was looking into that. Some theories do go with the floating option although some go with the land option.

Excellent video mate. I was up there in 2019 and spent a few days exploring the Preseli hills. Such a magical place. If you look at the side of Carn Goedog you can see a ridge that runs along the hillside. I believe it is a possibility they floated the stones on a kind of canal network off the hills and down past Craig Rhos Y Felin. The idea came to me as I was on Carn Goedog and it has stuck in my mind ever since. Check out my videos, they are not as professional as yours just filmed on a hand held Gopro. Mark Horsebox 👍

Nice vid, you got up close and personal to those Stones! I have been through there? decades ago, not walking like you, but in my car, never got out? was a bit disappointed with the hills? to me they were a bit low? to what I was used to. now I have seen your vid, I am sorry I never went for a walk?

Not hills but actually mountains as foel Drygarn and others are over 1000 ft above sea level. Foel cwm cerwyn being 1758 ft above sea level and Carn Ingli being 1135 ft above for example. I'm a native local born Welshman and proud of our landscape.

I'm proud to be Welsh as well. However, in the UK it's 2000 feet to be officially called a mountain. Although, we call lots of places around where I live, mountains which are much smaller. Semantics aside, it is a beautiful area.

    Druid nonsense?

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The romanticised notion of druids you see in homemade robes and making up ceremonies at stonehenge at midsummer etc. Also, "druidism" dates from much later than when Stonehenge was actually built.
