His comment about being a perfectionist with the game juice makes a lot of sense. The game is really absurdly simple but it’s so satisfying to interact with and is a great example of what a difference design makes
No surprise he’s a low level guy. The game is absolutely rock solid through and through, and the perfectionism shows. What a delightful interview, thanks for it!
I think his background with programming simulations of things explains why balatro is the way it is: You combine a bunch of different rules together - jokers, playing card enhancements, etc. - then you press play and watch all of their complex interactions get resolved.
This dude is almost unrelatably smart and reasonable. Makes for a great interviewee, and evidently a great game designer.I'm glad for his success even more now I've heard the doc.
0:08 LocalThunk: "You can say it however you want to say it." 0:32 Danny: "I've been instructed to say it a different way to how I wanted to say it." (Great episode, by the way. Love your work
Hi, big fan of Noclip and really vibing with this new audio doc format! One small(?) constructive criticism, I think it would still be useful to have TH-cam time stamps just for going back or skipping to any parts. Looking forward to more!
The thing about dreaming and hearing the song all day just right in the spot - same here. Maaan, I just downloaded the game. This developer is inspiring - thanks.
Every time the talking pauses mid-sentence for the music to kick in, it feels like the next logical thing that will happen is Antonio Banderas saying "...but that is a tale for another day."
What a great combination elements, I have never even played a card game before so I never thought I'd like it but the amount of people praising it out made me curious and the way everything just works from the music, sfx to the feel and visuals just taps on the human brain to keep going.
This turned out REALLY well, I'm excited for all of these coming up! Most of my available media time is auditory only so I'm extra appreciating more stuff from you guys in this format!
Holy shit he never even saw a video poker machine before? I thought for sure it was a deliberate design choice when I played the game for the first time. AND he never played a roguelike deck builder before. What a legend
Very cool interview, love learning about the Balatro lore. I do find that the background music at around 4:00 going through the voices makes it very hard for me to focus on the words, especially combined with the light echo on LocalThunk's voice.
This is really cool! It's so crazy that LocalThunk accidentally stumbled into channeling video poker for the game's aesthetic. Such a great game - perfect way to make a few hours disappear.
Tried to look for this on Google Podcast and could not wind it there ...? But maybe understandable since Google Podcasts is getting sunset by Google. ...Related - any podcast app recommendations please? :D
Podcast Addict has been my replacement that has been everything I ever wanted in a podcast player, my friend. I have Patreon and non-Patreon supports that play well with it.
whatever I'm hearing after the beginning of the podcast of the game title sounds horribly wrong to my ears; the first pronunciation of Balatro in the podcast is correct; it has to be. I refuse to believe otherwise.
There's really no need for adding music to your podcasts/interview, if anything, it don't allow your viewers to listen just to voices or mix it with the music they want to. This is especially annoying for the given length of 40+ minutes. For me the magic of podcasts is that it is raw and unedited.
Only fools and noobs think this is a good game. It's rubbish, just a lottery. You need constant grinding restarts until you get good "multiplying" winning jokers. The others are garbage time fillers. There is no proper card playing skills needed at all. The devs have conned all the mugs and fanboys.
A documentary, but for your ears? Sign me up, bro.
Man, wait til you hear about podcasts
@@grunkbunkleman This made me roll with laughter 🤣🤣🤣
What an incredible radio style interview with the contextual music and sound effects added to the background

Are you working on a Joseph Anderson Balatro highlights?

Listen to The Making of Balatro while playing Balatro. Perfection!
Noclip x Balatro x NorthernLion - doesn't get much better than that.
Hearing he built the UI without ever having seen video poker is hilarious!
Huge +2

The audio effects that signal a transition in segments is next level. Easy to listen to.
Seriously, one of the best games ever made! The generosity and good-natured feel of the game is just incredible.

I love that I was in the middle of watching old Noclip docs when this dropped
I was in the middle of playing a round of balatro lol
Dude was more excited about the Zamboni. Great talk
As a hobbyist game dev myself, I'm pleasantly surprised how many of my question were asked and answered in this interview.

Thank you for bringing Big 2 to the masses and mentioning its Cantonese origins!!!! 🇭🇰

What I don't get is how he was a Northernlion viewer but never watched him play Slay the Spire in that time.

This is a great interview. Thank you for capturing this look into the creation of this game.
Love that art. What a nice, relaxed chat 👌
Love the content and format! Looking forward to more.
Cool interview! So funny to hear NL clips, truly the goat
Another series of more Noclip content! 🎉🎉🎉
Thumbnail is giving me “A D’wyer Darkly” vibes
Brilliant format. Audio design is brilliant. Can literally see the video in my head.

Great Interview!! LocalThunk is quite the genius, their story and their game are a massive inspiration towards my own game development pursuits
excellent content Danny! adding this to my core listening.
Wonderful addition to the noclip content family!
Great format. A nice chunky size with very welcome voiceovers, tying the whole thing together!
Another piercing look into the human behind a game of almost inhumane intricacy - thanks for another great work guys, definitely support more of this!
This really feels like a documentary in audio form. Fantastic stuff!
I've been holding off buying this as I've heard how addictive it can be. I might finally have to cave after listening to this. Great episode!
Buy it. Unless you value your spare time
This was realluy really interesting. What a great converstaion. Thanks a lot for your work.
It is taking everything I have not to pick this game up now. Great first episode can't wait for more

Sounds a very talented individual. Great podcast
Oh dwear, so much Noclip content!
Absolutely loved this, more!!
I just heard New Blood and I'm SO down for this. Episode 2 plsss
Amazing episode!
Cool thumbnail, who did the art?

Love the show
when you announced this i wondered if you'd build a Joker puppet for this interview
This came could work fantastically table top if they used similar technology to Mix Deck. Card reader board with NFCs in the cards
Nice interview
this is fantastic
Love the game, never played this kind of Game before, get those X going 🤩

Good stuff Danny! Good luck with this series! Always feel free to hit me up if you ever want to chat with our devs.
That illustration of Danny looks like Mark Harmon
das gut!
great interview but for me personally the amount of background music was very distracting.
Loving to listen but I had to hide the video because it's so bright and harsh on the eyes
The fact that LocalThunk avoided playing or learning about other similar games seems so unusual to me.
Best Game Ever!
I don't think I liked all the musical audio clips between sections. I'd rather just have brief cuts.
We don’t deserve localthunk
whatever I'm hearing after the beginning of the podcast of the game title sounds horribly wrong to my ears; the first pronunciation of Balatro in the podcast is correct; it has to be. I refuse to believe otherwise.
Why do you have that awful and loud background music? I can't even focus on the interview. 3:44 I can't hang it is just too loud.
Honestly, I keep calling it Baltaro
Nah, I prefer Balatro.
This is Daniel Mullins. I called it.
Not sure about that, but Mullins is definitely a great game designer. Inscryption was quite the experience.
Nope!
wish this didnt have music
