This is probably my favorite Dorothy monologue in the entire show. It’s just so shamelessly sarcastic, dry, spiteful and HILARIOUS. Bea was always my favorite.
+phoenixnyc That's probably why Rose was hesitant to ask. She was afraid she would be chastised for asking a dumb question (i.e. sarcasm and a hit on the head with a newspaper).
@@phoenixnyc There were two other times. Once, Blanche asks Dorothy why Rose asks such things, but Dorothy came back around and said she'd allow the question. The other time, it was Rose's birthday or something good or bad happened.
My mother did this, but instead of a paper bird, she just got a plastic dinosaur and said that God and “Santa” will turn the dinosaur into a dog, so after 7 months of being good, I find it dead when the Rottweiler next door used it as a chew toy.
I only just recently started looking up clips of this show here on TH-cam, but if volume of laughter is a measure of quality, this is probably the best clip I've seen. It shouldn't be so hilarious because it's such a horrible thing for Sophia to do to her daughter, but good lord, Dorothy's delivery is just perfect. :)
Here’s one that had the audience roaring, including a shriek of laughter from one woman. Sophia is writing her will with Rose’s help, but Dorothy finds out that Sophia has been hoarding money and she’s pissed. th-cam.com/video/LBR_V4PcQZc/w-d-xo.html
When my mother was 6 or 7 years old (around 1970 was the year), she won a mini gumball machine at a carnival. She loved that thing. It was red with a glass bowl top, and it took pennies to get your gumballs. For a week she toted it around and offered gumballs to everyone. Then one day her 13-year-old brother wanted a gumball. She told him you needed a penny. He replied that you did not, took her gumball machine, and smashed it on the ground. Glass & gumballs went flying everywhere. My mother cried for 2 days. It was the first thing she ever won, and it was gone in seconds. It didn't make her a broken adult, but she does think about it from time to time. It always makes me kind of sad when I think about it. 😢
"Well ofcourse I had a pet... :)" How I miss her so dearly! Her tone of voice says it all from the moment she opens her mouth I started laughing this line had it all LOL
What's funny about this is the first time I saw it, and before Dorothy answered Rose's question, I was trying to imagine a dead paper bird. The only thing I can picture was an upright paper bird tipped over to its side. Dead. I also love Rose's face when she's trying to process the same thing as well.
Dorothy's life is kind of a mess, and a lot of it is Sophia's fault. These stories are hilarious, but they make the heartfelt moments all the more touching.
Another one Was When Describing to Rose how she was a Contestant in a Beauty Pageant when Sophia was the judge!😂 Dorothy " I Practiced that Trombone for Weeks, and there was MA sitting in the front row sucking on a Lemon"!😂😂
0:25 "You know, the kind you have to twirl over your head to get them to tweet?" Rose: (skeptical) "And that was your pet?" Sophia: (defensive) "They're very clean." ROFL
😂I am reminded of the episode where Blanche was going on about what a gorgeous baby she was (pink cheeks, button nose, ruby lips, ringlet curls) and Dorothy countered with, "I was the tallest baby in the history of New York and had a rash on my head till I was two," 🤣
For months I'd only watched Golden Girls through compilations on TH-cam. This was the very scene, the exact moment that made me make a Hulu account to watch the entire show.
I laughed so hard when I first watched the episode with this particular Dorothy story. And up until today it is one of Dorothy's stories that makes me laugh the most. I don't know why. I think it's meanly because of the way she tells it rather than the story itself. That Bea Arthur truly was a genious of acting, may she rest in Peace.
Dorothy: So everyday I'm being very good and praying and looking for any sign of life, and becoming very attached to that ridiculous paper bird. So you can imagine in my heartbreak when one morning I find it dead. Rose: How does a paper bird die? Dorothy: Good question! Someone used it to restart the pilot light.
this is one of my all time fav of bea-dorthy cuz why would a paper bird die ask rose it seems she FINALLY graps a concept of conversation after all this time LOL love it then bea says Some one used it to lite a pilot how cruel LOL
Bea would have made a better live action Maleficent than Angelina Jolie. She very nearly looks like her (and Aurora's mom) without the huge chin, had the voice for it, height/build, etc.
This is probably my favorite Dorothy monologue in the entire show. It’s just so shamelessly sarcastic, dry, spiteful and HILARIOUS. Bea was always my favorite.
Bea was the main star tbh.

Bea Arthur's sarcasm is top notch in this scene!
"So you can imagine my heartbreak when one morning I find it dead" I'm in tears every time
Yes the sound of her voice at " dead" . The delivery and timing this woman had was incredible.
Tami Hayes And how she responds to Rose, with good question it’s all leading to that final phrase and Sophia’s reaction
I love how she smiles and is so cheery throughout this whole story 😂

My favorite part of this scene is Dorothy's tone and facial expressions at the line, "So you can imagine my heartbreak when one day I find it dead."

Take note all you future actors/actresses. THIS is how you deliver a line. Classic Bea.
@Logia dude
Bro you're talking to a comment that is a decade old.
With how dysfunctional Sophia's parenting was, it's amazing Dorothy turned out as well-adjusted as she did!
PintheDog Not that well-adjusted. Did you see the episode where she's telling the story about her doll and how her sister Gloria ruined it.... LOL
***** Of course! But still better-adjusted than Rose and Blanche turned out!
PintheDog That ain't much competition. Rose is from Saint Olaf and Blanche is the definition of slut lol.

*Camera on Sophia* XD
I love how she tells the story with a smile and her signature dry humor
Same. She also tell a story of St. Olaf to a father of a pregnant teen girl & she has the same calm voice
Even for Roses simple mind she was like," how does a paper bird die?" Love it!

I'm wondering if Dorothy told that pony/paper bird story to other people because Sophie even said "Not the pony story again".
I love Bea's voice during this delivery. The tone is perfect.

for once rose is confused from a ridiculous story and is asking the logical question

Sophia’s reaction: “ not the pony thing again” as she shakes her head and rolls her eyes.

I wouldn't be surprised if this actually happened to one of the writers of this episode. It has that perfect ring of truth to it.
