      Go away Memo guy. This is a true professional craftsman sharing real life techniques. By showing his mistakes, he also teaches how to fix them. Those lessons are pure gold and learning those is the path to being a much better woodworker. I hope he never stops his format of video and his lust for helping the wounded heroes. Thank you Rob!

      Critical people often hide behind a screen name. I prefer to let my name be visible when complimenting, criticizing (constructively) or asking questions because I'm careful not to respond in a way that I would be embarrassed to have people know it was me.

    Pure gold dust. Tenacity and determination - remember it's not what you produce, but the way you do it. Only produce perfection, no matter what the cost, and the knowledge and experience will be off the chart - and ours will grow too by soaking this up. Keep producing these with included mistakes, Rob - priceless. Nobody anywhere ever made as high quality fine furniture as this without making mistakes, and often in strings, like this. Nobody. Long live the Purple Heart Project.

    I don't want you to skip recording stuff just to get this series over faster. Watching your problem solving process is very helpful for carrying over to my own shop issues. I periodically end up with "design features" on pieces that started as a way of hiding or fixing something I messed up and seeing how you work through those things is a great learning tool.

    I can write only on behalf of myself, so give this comment whatever weight appeals to you. For me, the value if this series of videos is not learning how to construct dovetail drawers. Rather, I give the highest marks to the study these episodes gives to the thought process of a master craftsman. Nowhere else have I seen not only how to undertake a project, but also the painstaking process by which that project is thought through and corrections made on the fly. I won't be so frustrated with my own workshop shortcomings in the future. I will miss these insights when Rob and the crew find that they can no longer devote so much effort to creating and uploading videos like these.

    I know the rabbet trick works well but I’m wondering if you’ve ever tried a dovetail alignment board?. David Barron is the most common design I’ve seen used for this but I’m not sure if the original idea is his. Maybe something like this would work better where the stock is narrower leaving less registration surface on the rabbet? Great videos I’ve learned tons watching this series.

I have a question though, I don't know i I missed your reasoning, but I notice you don't do a dry run of putting the drawer together first before gluing, is there a reason for this?

  • @larrychristensen5917
    @larrychristensen5917 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rob a thought is there a slim chance after you prepared the walnut front / back it could have developed a very slight twist? It would be interesting to check them with winding sticks. That could cause the issue you had.

    Take care.

  • @scottbrader-kd9vyy225
    @scottbrader-kd9vyy225 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wondered about the problem so I went back and watched the earlier video again where you marked and cut the dovetails. I make no claim to be anything other than a total novice, so I may be way off, but when you offset the boards by the saw kerf did you reference off the top edgge? I kind of lost track of the top and bottom surfaces as you moved the boards around, so I may be totally wrong on which edge you used and maybe the top was the correct surface. I'm here to learn and I have no problem with someone telling me I'm completely off base. I hope to be able to put together the tools and make it to a training the hand workshop at some point in the future so I can tackle dovetails with confidence instead of fear.

  • @amgrant
    @amgrant 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Rob! Any possibility the inexplicable twist in the drawer is due to the amount of time in between marking and cutting the joints and the final assembly? I’m guessing if you were doing this on your own, off camera, you could complete it in the span of one day. Since you’re doing it here over a number of days, is it possible the wood has moved ever so slightly in that time? Wouldn’t take much.

      cbryantbear not a silly question, but one that you need to consider what answer you’re looking for. That Jointer is definitely flatter than my bench and my No. 8 Jointer, and it’s a little more flat than my tablesaw (because of the wings added on). So, even though it might not be “perfectly flat” it’s the best in my shop, and so that’s what I have my standard set at.

    Painful to watch you run out of hands but it makes me feel better that I am not the only one.

    And that right there highlights the dichotomy of this medium. Whilst providing legitimate content to interested parties, someone else sits there and watches something he obviously has little interest in, making him an armchair expert with a voice in the process. Me personally, I work with wood and appreciate the standard to which Rob works (I thought it was just me that uses feeler gauges!). Yes, I find it frustrating sometimes, as others have commented on, and I cringe when the penny has drops that he's erred, just as I do - and probably you do too!
    This idiot though has grown up in an environment where limited syntax skills and rudeness are considered acceptable! He'll hopefully liberate himself and go and address his insecurities by watching something involving smoking tyres or half naked women, or both.
    Let's look at it this way; hypothetically, if I was watching some fool assemble and disassemble a rifle only to go out and shoot at hapless animals for 'sport' for 22 episode, I'd be yawning for England, however, whilst I might comment on the futility of his activities, I'd respect that persons right to live out his fantasies... I just wouldn't watch to a point where I had to be obnoxious!
    Rob, you do a good job! I'm sure you don't, but don't take it to heart; let's just ignore the distractors, crack on and get the drawers done!
    Incidentally, why did you stop promoting the PHP stuff? I have a diagnosis of PTSD from my time in the police in the UK, If your guys have similar issues to me then you must do all you can to help! Again, if this attracts negativity, then so be it.
