Winnipeg gardener here. I once accidentally started a cherry tomato plant in December (it was in the pot of a flower I was overwintering). Eventually I gave it its own pot and it struggled on until I planted it out in late May. That plant grew higher than the peak of the garage and produced an abundant crop!

2 years ago I saw that in the UK they sowed onions en masse on the second day of Christmas (Boxing Day). I live in the Netherlands zone 7B and since then I have been doing that too with good results! I also sow leeks, lettuce, herbs, peppers! The rest in February because they become slender plants due to lack of sun!

Starting alliums early definitely makes a difference. Last season I started some onions and shallots in January then again in February, and the ones started in January turned out way bigger by harvest time. I just dump the seeds into larger pots rather than than potting them up over time. Just give them a haircut if they grow too long and you’ll see the stalks start to bulk up and they’re easy to transplant outside in the spring because they’re more robust.

Last year I started onions by seed. It was such a success. We also bought onion sets in case the seed starts didn't work out. Soooo we harvested a lot of onions. This year I will be more confident with seeds and will not buy onion sets. A bit of babysitting but well worth a larger onion.

Well i just started a bunch of random seeds today. I had a baby in feb so it was impossible to garden in 2024. I was so fed up i just started some bc my husband made me a nice little set up in our extra room. My baby is going to learn two things from birth, he is a child of the earth and your past time will be helping people. He is going to volunteer at the food bank 3 days a week with me. Anything extra we grow and we purposely grow extra, to give to the food bank.

I grew Columbine from seed last year and when those went to seed, I sprinkled all the seeds in the area I wanted more. Fingers crossed. The Foxglove I grew from seed last year got put in the ground way too late. Those seedlings established themselves at least, and I'm really hoping to see them flower in spring. For years I've been starting onions from seed in Dec/Jan. They never get big enough to bother harvesting here in WI. I'm going to try again and get them out as early as possible and give them extra compost and organic fish fertilizer. Also, I've grown asparagus from seeds I saved. They are so cute when they are babies...and SO easy to lose to weeds:/ Love your videos! Thanks:)

Note that there are columbines that are native to North America (Aquilegia Canadensis) and also varieties native to Europe (Aquilegia vulgaris) and it's always better to choose the native variety of possible; it will self-seed and maintain itself much better.

"See my dogs run for thee days!" - Uhhhh. So I have relatives that live in Saskatchewan and I literally heard them tell this exact same joke. I know the population isn't that big but I didn't think it was so small that y'all told the same joke!
Also I roadtrip from MN to see them and it's basically the same flat view from ND onward. I once took a pic of a lone grain bin just because I just left a gas station in ND where they had all these sweatshirts and postcards saying "See scenic North Dakota".
That was it guys. That was the scenic view! Anyway I got distracted. I haven't watched the video yet . . .

My own Lessons learned in asparagus growing in zone 3:
    1. Do not buy walmart crowns. 1 of 10 survived
    2. Find crowns at your local horticulture site if possible. UofS has a sale every year and all of my crowns survived.
    3. Aparagus seeds take forever to germinate and they need to be transplanted gently...
Its a long game...maybe in 3 years ill be able to eat some. 😅😅
