Winnipeg gardener here. I once accidentally started a cherry tomato plant in December (it was in the pot of a flower I was overwintering). Eventually I gave it its own pot and it struggled on until I planted it out in late May. That plant grew higher than the peak of the garage and produced an abundant crop!
I started my sweet onions in January last year and then transplanted them into my garden in May. I had big, lush onions by the end of August. I am definitely going to start my onions now. Thanks!
“Along with my x boyfriends.” Love the sense of humour. Yes Canada is cold but also to see your dog run for three days says we’re pretty flat too. Love your work. I think I’m becoming a new geek. Don’t have the knowledge like you but I’ll get them with your videos.
2 years ago I saw that in the UK they sowed onions en masse on the second day of Christmas (Boxing Day). I live in the Netherlands zone 7B and since then I have been doing that too with good results! I also sow leeks, lettuce, herbs, peppers! The rest in February because they become slender plants due to lack of sun!
I'm in Manitoba and dealing with our second snowstorm this week. so decided to throw caution to the wind (gale-force, btw) and order columbine, leek, artichoke, and shallot seeds. and I'll see what happens. Merry Christmas and let's all hope we have a wonderful gardening season in 2025! Shari
Starting alliums early definitely makes a difference. Last season I started some onions and shallots in January then again in February, and the ones started in January turned out way bigger by harvest time. I just dump the seeds into larger pots rather than than potting them up over time. Just give them a haircut if they grow too long and you’ll see the stalks start to bulk up and they’re easy to transplant outside in the spring because they’re more robust.
Hello from Ontario. I've been growing tomatoes and greens under the lights in the basement for a few years now to enjoy through the winter. This year I'm attempting to grow a zucchini!! So far so good.
I'm not sure how much effort it takes to timestamp the sections but I love when videos have timestamps so I can watch sections I'm interested in and scan the general overview. Great video though thanks again as always!
Honestly I have been looking into this also because I have a day job that’s just stupid busy these days and I have ZERO extra minutes. I have to options 1 I find an AI program that can do it. Option 2 - a GIC that has spare time emails me where they thing the TIMESTAMPS should go and then I can pop them in on my studio end. The couple AI ones I tried were garbage 🗑️
@GardeningInCanada it's definitely a challenge to garden up here. A heated greenhouse is pretty much a necessity to grow tomatoes, etc! We need to create our own soil & grow in raised beds since the ground is so cold. Definitely need to love gardening 😄
Last year I started onions by seed. It was such a success. We also bought onion sets in case the seed starts didn't work out. Soooo we harvested a lot of onions. This year I will be more confident with seeds and will not buy onion sets. A bit of babysitting but well worth a larger onion.
Haha seeing your dog run for three days reminds me of a ford dealership in Edmonton had a series of commercials featuring Nicky Fordinski who’s wife decided to get fit by walking and he hadn’t seen her for months. Well i just started a bunch of random seeds today. I had a baby in feb so it was impossible to garden in 2024. I was so fed up i just started some bc my husband made me a nice little set up in our extra room. My baby is going to learn two things from birth, he is a child of the earth and your past time will be helping people. He is going to volunteer at the food bank 3 days a week with me. Anything extra we grow and we purposely grow extra, to give to the food bank.

@GardeningInCanada haha, it's about 15°F at night right now but we have a short season here like you so I have to start things inside early so I get a harvest in that 105-120 day frost free window. I started asparagus seeds in a pot late summer. Now it is January still in a pot in my garage in winter and still green. Planting in spring will see what happens.
I do believe my over winter pepper plant isn't going to make it. The branches are turning dark. It's a habanero. The deer feasted on it and after moving it the plant was so bushy, beautiful and full of flowers which all fell off when i brought her indoors. I'm broken hearted. So, how do I know for sure?
My own Lessons learned in asparagus growing in zone 3: 1. Do not buy walmart crowns. 1 of 10 survived 2. Find crowns at your local horticulture site if possible. UofS has a sale every year and all of my crowns survived. 3. Aparagus seeds take forever to germinate and they need to be transplanted gently... Its a long game...maybe in 3 years ill be able to eat some. 😅😅
@@leahnichol6665 they likely need a few weeks of cold stratification. I did that with alpine strawberry seeds last year and was very successful. I have white strawberry seeds to try for this season and will be starting the cold stratification process in the next day or two.
Oh gosh!! Little buggers 🐱. I clip a sheet over my grow shelf because it’s close to my front door and while there is room I always find my cat laying on the shelf under the lights. He wants to grow! Onions and leeks are my struggle every year.....
Yeaaa that are so easy to forget about
Can i put asparagus seed in the garden to overwinter or do they need to be warm for germination
I started asparagus seeds in a pot late summer. Now it is January still in a pot in my garage in winter and still green. Planting in spring will see what happens.
I just can't seem to find the motivation to start. It's gonna be a toughie.
I am kind feeling burnt out too 😩😩
I do believe my over winter pepper plant isn't going to make it. The branches are turning dark. It's a habanero. The deer feasted on it and after moving it the plant was so bushy, beautiful and full of flowers which all fell off when i brought her indoors. I'm broken hearted. So, how do I know for sure?
Even if you have a stump left water + light and see what happens!
My own Lessons learned in asparagus growing in zone 3:
1. Do not buy walmart crowns. 1 of 10 survived
2. Find crowns at your local horticulture site if possible. UofS has a sale every year and all of my crowns survived.
3. Aparagus seeds take forever to germinate and they need to be transplanted gently...
Its a long game...maybe in 3 years ill be able to eat some. 😅😅
Yes very good tips!
What about strawberries now?
That is another good one to start
@@GardeningInCanadaare strawberries started from seeds?
@@ProudCanadian-vv6bkcan be, evidently. I watched someone plant white strawberry seeds that didn’t germinate. 😢
@@leahnichol6665 they likely need a few weeks of cold stratification. I did that with alpine strawberry seeds last year and was very successful. I have white strawberry seeds to try for this season and will be starting the cold stratification process in the next day or two.
@@way2fast503 That makes sense. She planted them in summer, if I remember correctly.
I am growing chard in my bathroom lol. I got me a lil problem called kitties.
Oh no 🙈 lol at least they are cute
Oh gosh!! Little buggers 🐱. I clip a sheet over my grow shelf because it’s close to my front door and while there is room I always find my cat laying on the shelf under the lights. He wants to grow! (Not that he needs to lol). He’s older and leaves most of my plants alone but likes to chew anything grass like…my onions mostly 🤦♀️
I tried lavender once, but it didn't work. I do intend to try again. What is the best way to germinate lavender?
The jokes at the beginning got me 😂😂
😏😏
Can you do a future video on just onions showing the process please?
super hot pepper seeds canbe started real early some take a month to germinate
I start my super hots in January and am always nervous 😅
My neighbours left a Bell pepper plant in a pot on their deck, now frozen solid, I'm guessing there's no bringing that baby back to life then?
Or should I snag it & give it some love?
Depends on how frost if any of the main stem survived you actually will be okay. If everything is mush though you are SOL.
can't find the time stamp for Eucalyptus ..... anyone know where she talked about the Eucalyptus ?
I didn’t totally forgot! But it’s falling under longer time to put on biomass.
How about zone 1b?.
I would just push it back a couple weeks. But your last frost date from my understanding is only 2 weeks after mine.
Don’t you think zone 3 is getting warmer every season? Iam harvesting into October and early November now.
