    One thing to remember with contact glues (and that is what this is) is that the harder you press the surfaces together the better the bond will be. You get one chance so do it right the first time.

    Contact cement is an absolute godsend for things that can't be clamped readily. Shoe soles are a great example, as they often have strange geometry where they meet up with the rest of the shoe. I often end up repairing soles that have come halfway detached, and it's as simple as cutting down some toothpicks, stuffing them vertically between the shoe and sole to hold them apart, applying contact cement (and letting it dry), then pulling out the toothpicks with some long nose pliers and pressing the shoe and sole back together.

    Also for a stronger bonding, you can reactivate the two sides of your contact adhesive with with an electric heat stripping gun.. Just simply hold the gun at a 12-inch distance from your item once the adhesive is touch-dry but still tacky to the touch.. And with 1to 2 back n forth full length blasts on medium heat from the heat gun will be enough... Then apply both sides and, you'll "seal the deal" like nothing else.. Also. Applied heat works in reverse for stripping & removing most other materials where contact adhesives have been used.. I hope this is helpful to anyone. 🙂👍

    This is also an old technique used in the graphic design world. We called it a “Dry Mount.” This was done for items you wanted to REALLY adhere, so for presentations where looks were everything, or indoor board signage. We’d use rubber cement, coat both surfaces, let dry, then put tracing paper between them. We then would slide the paper out from between them while smoothing over the bonding surfaces. Once mounted, the excess was just rubbed off with a rubber erasure and it’d look clean and presentable with a pretty much permanent bond.

    • @TheDylls
      @TheDylls 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honest question: I'm guessing the bond isn't as strong, but do you think wood glue would be good enough to make this project last? (It doesn't SEEM like they'd get much handling, so I'm leaning towards yes?)

    • @AndrewDeLong
      @AndrewDeLong 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheDylls Typically, the bond that wood glue creates is stronger than the bond between the wood fibers themselves.

    • @jeffwells641
      @jeffwells641 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem with wood glue is it needs to be clamped as it dries to ensure a strong and more importantly in this case FLAT bond. That surface is way too large to easily clamp while the glue dries. No doubt there are scenarios where it can work (like bent laminate between custom molds), but contact cement can just be pressed with a little hand roller - easy peasy.

    In the automotive repair industry mechanics call it "gorilla snot" and I've seen it used in many applications from gluing cork valve cover gaskets to the covers so they can be removed and re-installed without destroying the cork (you have to grease the other side of the gasket before installing it) to actually smearing it on a leaking gasket joint area to stop a leak.

      @@ZacBuilds it's similar to rubber cement. The NASTY solvents keep the polymer is suspension until you coat the surfaces. The solvents flash off leaving the fresh rubber on the surfaces. Vegeta gave Goku his power when he was basically knocked out and was still alive after giving his power (Not that big of a gain). Goku still beat Jiren to the ground before taking his time to knock him out. Guess for yourselves (Goku = stronger that Beerus)

    Normally you just use glue for this.
    After you're done, weigh down the area evenly.
    The last master I watched used 10kg of sand at about 30x60cm. In 2kg bags.
    Then you don't have to worry about toxic gases.
    Btw, the complaining is necessary so that the pieces can be connected across the board with a lot of pressure. Otherwise it can easily happen that "bubbles" form at some point.
    I don't assume that you have to worry about something like that at the chemical club...

    When I used to veneer, the best process I found, was to use a thin layer of wood glue on both surfaces and let it dry to about 85%. Then press them together with a hot iron (any old clothing iron) WITH NO STEAM.
    Always came out perfect and always a very solid adhesion.

    Contact cement is a bad choice for raw wood veneer because it creepsover time causing cracks, wrinkles and bubbles in the veneer. You can get away with it on something like edgebanding but not in the field. If you don't have the proper equipment to veneer then the next best solution is to coat both sides you are bonding with PVA glue just like you did with the contact ... allow it to dry completely ... then apply it dry using a iron and medium heat. Even with this method I've had paperback alligator on me. Veneering is tricky ... it looks good when you walk away but look at it a year or two later and it's a mess.
    A tip on contact cement ... throw out the can and roller and get yourself some butane based spray adhesive ... the stuff I use is made by admiral, it flashes off and ready to bond in less than 5 minutes, no odour (I use it on as the approved p.lam adhesive on hospital projects) and bonds tenaciously. 3M 77 also works well on small projects

    If you buy Engineers 'Guide blocks' they are very smooth and cut to 'dimension'.
    They will stick to each other without any glue, dry or other.
    'bonding' is the process of stopping air getting between 2 surfaces, that's the best stick.

  • @rvail136

    Master cabinetmaker here. Pro tip, when you're applying the veneer NEVER start at the ends to apply it. If you're off just a little bit, you're screwed as it will be off a considerable amount. Start at the middle and work your way to the ends. It's easier to control that way.

    This stuff was used to stick laminate strips onto kitchen units, tables or whatever else he was making…..He made kitchens by hand them installed the finished product.
    That glue would get you high AF of the room wasn’t well ventilated, just by standing in the room for more than a couple minutes.
    An apprentice dropped a whole litre tub of it in a basement and we had to let the whole space air out for 3 days before we could go back in 😂…….That apprentice may or may not have been me.
