It makes more sense now. The board of Twitter sees one of their most prolific and high profile users is a seemingly successful billionaire business boy that has a lot of criticisms of the platform. They give this 'successful billionaire' one of those nice, cushy, highly paid seats on the board, find out he's an idiot and freeze him out. With his ego dented, he starts angrily throwing money around and agrees to purchase the company and take it private, giving him sole control. Reality eventually kicks in and he tries to back out but he gets legally forced to buy the company that he's already significantly devalued, for the amount be agreed to pay. Presumably, when Twitter collapses, he's fine but his creditors lose the best part of 44 billion. But they can still sue for negligence causing the collapse and bankrupt him. It'll be interesting to see where this story goes.
