    I really like that he did sparring on his test, a lot of older Masters shy away from it. I also like his love of foot sweeps in sparring (a man after my own heart). Nice self defense demo and breaking too!

    Master Whitlow and I got our first degrees together under Master Hardin in 1976. This was old school TKD. He has always been a natural. I switched out of TKD into Chinese internal arts but have always been on the path. Master McNeely invited me to this testing which I would not have missed. He is my lifelong brother along with Master McNeely, and along with my first teacher, Master Hardin, I will always admire their skill, devotion to the arts, and dedication to promoting it to others. They're just all around great people, and a lot of fun! Thanks for posting this!

      Of course. And thank you for sharing. I'm sure we probably met there. I got him ready for the test and the weapons portion was mine. I was the big boy he was beating with bat's. Lol. And yes. I have always admired them greatly. Started with Hardin in 89 and got with GMW in 95. Bend with him every since. He is definitely my brother and definitely still a inspiration to me to this day.

    I make it a point to watch belt tests on you tube, it is an entertainment I afford myself. I have to say, you are a very energetic, skilled and fit martial artist for someone gaining their 9th dan. Usually, I watch either mcdojo 9th dans or older people gaining their rank by just showing up and trying to move about without breaking a hip.

    Someone on here was commenting Grandmaster Brad Whitlow about his ability to really defend himself from a real attack. I will say this how many martial artist have ever really had to use their skills in a real life situation?And 2 being a black belt doesn't mean you are invincible.But the person also commented on UFC if I remember rightly being more realistic than the likes of Taekwondo.The person may have a point in terms of the practicality of the use of UFC when it comes to a self defence situation. But at the end of UFC is still in a ring and even though it seems effective when it comes to it's moves compared to the flashiness of Taekwondo.UFC is still in a controlled environment and nobody is attempting to kill you with a knife.

    • @GuroBillyBrown

    • @miltonbrown7479
      @miltonbrown7479 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Sifu / Guro / Master Billy Brown Sifu, you are saying all the right things anyone can criticise Taekwondo in terms of practicality in a life or death situation.But I will go even further compared to what I said before regarding UFC.Any martial art looks good in a controlled environment,but I'll even go further than that.Even a martial art like Ju Jitsu that would be more effective than Taekwondo when it comes to self defence when it comes to being on the floor. How effective would Ju Jitsu be if you had 3 or 4 men piling on top of you?One man, meaning to damage you,the situation would favour the martial artist. So, like you said, Sifu, unless a person has been in a life or death situation,then that person is just being ignorant.

      Sifu,Brad Whitlow deserves massive respect. Like I mentioned earlier, there's videos of other Black belt testing on TH-cam. Black belts from Junior Black Belt to Senior ones kicking technique had a lot to be desired.Like I said, the Junior Black Belt girl couldn't even execute properly a back kick to break broads. That's why when she tried to do a jumping back kick, she could hardly come off the floor or even do the technique. But yet I could do a jumping back kick breaking boards blind folded. But yet I am and was only a Blue Belt who could execute Black belt techniques. Brad Whitlow puts these First Degree Black belts to shame. Only one kicking technique did he fail to break the boards at the first attempt.How is it possible that my technique is better than some of those Black belts?And I was only a blue belt. But then that was all down to our instructor, Mr Ngo. He taught us proper technique. Like Bruce Lee once said a belt is only for holding up your trousers.

    I practised Taekwondo in the 90s, and I got to my Blue Belt in ITF Taekwondo,and to me, looking back now, I really earned it.Belts are award in general how well that you perform your patterns,but because the examiner wasn't happy with my sign wave while doing the pattern I failed a few times.The things is when it came to kicking I was doing Black Belt techniques like Jumping Back Kick and breaking boards blind folded..In our class the majority of us where colour belts,ranging from White to Red belt black Tag,but our technique was great. That is solely down to our instructors teaching..On other TH-cam videos, I have been watching Junior Black Belts and Black Belt. First, Degrees have countless attempts to break boards. And I don't mean attempting to break boards with a jumping back kick,I mean with basic side kick or reverse turning kick. There's a Junior Black Belt whose kicking technique was just terrible,she couldn't even bring her leg up properly to execute a jumping back kick or reverse turning kick. It took her countless attempts before she even broke a board.If it wasn't for the fact you saw with her Junior Black Belt on you'd have thought that she was a Yellow belt.But not just her many of the black belts were finding it hard to break boards. Just goes to show people get promotion through there patterns,or if they were fortunate to have an examiner who didn't care how your patterns looked like. Big respect goes to Grandmaster Brad Whitlow for actually taking his 9th Degree black belt exam,and at the same time showing how I as a former Taekwondo practitioner expect from a black belt. And it shouldn't matter what Degree of black belt you are. If you take umpteen attempts to break boards with a basic side or you can't even jump properly to attempt to break a board with a jumping back kick. Then that is embarrassing for the art of Taekwondo. But more to the point what does that say about those students instructor?

But after more than over 30 years, I am looking to do martial arts that are more effective when it comes to self-defense.Would you say that I should look to do something like Wing Chun or Ju Jitsu?I did Wing Chun back in the day but that was only for a few months and before I did Taekwondo. Sifu, did you ever practice Taekwondo yourself?And what are your thoughts about it?

    I trained under Master Whitlow in Murfreesboro, TN during the early to mid 1980's. I watched him test for 3rd degree black belt. I will never forget watching him execute a hook kick in very slow motion. Master Robert Hardin a judge. The reason I mention the hook kick in slow motion is simply this. But let me point out first and foremost Master Whitlow is a teacher at heart. I told Master Whitlow I can hardly wait til I can do the splits. His reply and I will never forget, "what good are the splits if you don't have the strength to pick up your leg?" People like Brad Whitlow, Robert Hardin, et al truly understood the dynamics and techinque of the remarkable power that can be developed in kicking technique with proper form and training. Odd that such depth of understanding of a martial art like Taekwondo comes from Arkansas!

      By the way. MjW is a chump that couldn't really fight his way out of a pillow fight but I'm glad that you think somehow a actor compares to a man who has traveled the world multiple times for the US team kicking ass plus has real life experience as a bouncer and body guard which your fav actor does not, to a actor who won some karate point matches... Dude. Use your mind be for making idiot comments.

      Lol.. Considered by many to be one of the best kickers of his time. A 65 year old man with 2 bad knees needs to work on his kicks... Stfu. Where are your kicks. Where are your videos? This man was kicking the sht out of people around the globe before you learned how to stroke your keyboard.... Lol
