WSM MOD | CAJUN BANDIT WHEEL & CYLINDER LOCK KIT | GRILL MODS | WEBER SMOKEY MOUNTAIN

  • This is a modification to my Weber Smokey Mountain 22.5 Smoker to lock the middle section (cylinder) to the base section, to help prevent them coming apart when being moved around. I've had this happen when moving across patio pavers or hitting a joint in the sidewalk. The casters I previously installed will go down into the joint or bump against the joint, then with me pushing it against the lodged wheel or uneven joint, the pressure causes the middle section of the smoker to jump up out of the set position of the base section. This mod kit uses brackets bolted onto the legs to tighten down holding the middle cylinder to the base section in three points. This should prevent this from happening anymore. Also, there is a wheel and bracket assembly which is included in this kit. It works out very nice.

    It's a great mod Phil, real glad I went for mine. I did a lot of research before committing as it was expensive to import but I think worth it, you see a lot of thought has gone into the design. The struts serve a dual function in stiffening the legs as well as clamping the centre barrel. It helps with support instead of cross members. Glad to see you’ve put the how to fit video up, I couldn’t find any resource when I was looking a few months back so your doing a great service. Thanks man, hope all is good with you 👍🔥

    I'm diggin' those mods bro. That's one cooker I don't have yet. 😁 I try to have wheels on all of mine too. I hurt my back in the Navy and it flairs up from time to time.

    • @progers5019
      @progers5019  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Weber needs to address this. The WSM is a terrific smoker, however you don't need this happening. It should lock into place. They don't include casters or handles either. The 22 is big and a handful. Adding the lid hinge, the handles, and this wheel & cylinder locking kit is a must IMO. From the comments and feedback, seems I am not the only one. However, with these mods and the grilling mod, it makes the WSM my favorite go to smoker/grill. Thanks-phil

      @@progers5019 Exactly haha. Like stumping your toe in the middle of the night haha. It makes me wonder why Weber and all other brands that are similar don't already make a lock like that. It seems like a needed item to me. I have a Orion smoker and you have to bend way down and pick it up by the charcoal pan. I was just thinking the other day that it needs handles on the side so I can move it.

    Hey Phil, enjoy the videos,, and the mods.. something that popped into my head was, that it would be nice.. to have a kids wagon handle attached to smokey mountain, or a " Y" rope assembly that could be attached to 2 of the 3 wheels and pulled around.

    • @progers5019
      @progers5019  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Pepper. Yea Ive used my fire poker to grab a leg before to pull around. Others have said they do something similar. Your idea is another good one even with the locking kit. On smooth concrete it's a breeze, but on pavers or surfaces with divits, it's best to pull from the bottom of the cooker. Thanks for the tip.

  • @CarolinaChrisOutdoors
    @CarolinaChrisOutdoors 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That was pretty slick!!! I think Weber should've definitely considered handles... but then again, seems like I might have a 22 inch kettle with only one handle... easy to roll, but difficult to pick up. Great job on the video and modification. Everything makes sense what you said and videod. Just a thought while watching you here... I think Cajun Bandit should provide a better, bigger caster than those small hard wheeled ones they sold you. Like the ones you get on a nice roll-a-way tool box. It would roll much easier with a softer rubber and twice the size wheel. But then again... it's only a Weber smoker.. :o)

    • @progers5019
      @progers5019  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny you bring that out Tony. I'm in the process of replacing the CB wheels because of that. Fine on smooth concrete, still problematic rolling across pavers. Stay Tuned.

      Cool! I've got a custom built 'oak pit' bbq'er.. has those same tiny hard wheels on it. Always wanted to swap them out. Maybe your upgrade will motivate me to do so?! I'll be watching to see how your wheel upgrade works, Phil. I just now subscribed and 'hit' the bell.

  • @rickcormier9160

    I tried rollers on mine, but the legs felt flimsy and I worried about damaging the bottom. I took the rollers off and built a deck with rollers. I still had the problem with the mid section, so I use a rope to pull the bottom section.
    I really like that modification and may get that along with the rotisserie that will fit both my smoker and kettle.

    • @progers5019
      @progers5019  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting. I used a poker with a hook to pull it sometime. HMB just said a storm blew his off the 5 ft tall deck, and his didn't come apart with this kit. Not bad. Thanks-phil

  • @josephcecchini1697
    @josephcecchini1697 ปีที่แล้ว

    Webber just needs to make this standard. I contacted them about this and they said it was a safety issue to keep from rolling away. Most other grills have wheels. If you grill on a hill you're an idiot anyways. I also gave them a great idea for the grommet, but never heard from them.

    Are the Bandits wheels better then what you had on there? I have what you first put on there. I was thinking of changing to a red wheel to roll easier.

      Glad you asked. The bandit wheels are not as good as what I had. The wheels on the dolly I got fot the PBC are super good. Gonna get some like that for my wsm. They came from Northern Company.

    Looks like the Cajun Bandit wheel kit works great. Can you get away with regular wheels from the hardware store?

    • @progers5019
      @progers5019  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I actually began with those and it was just fine. I think that is what most people use anyway. I didn't need the wheels since I had done that mod, but it came with the package. I needed the cylinder lock so my mid section would not jump off the bottom when pushing it across the pavers. The wheels in this kit are smaller than the ones I purchased from Lowes which I had on there. The smaller wheels catch worse in the joints of my patio pavers so I need to get larger wheels. They were one large stud vs a four hole mount. I'm looking. The wheels which came with a drum dolly for the PBC are very nice and roll across the pavers with no problem. Buying alone are expensive. Still looking on this. The cylinder lock works great. Just need to get the wheel thing working better. If you have concrete it's no problem.

      Hey Johnny, this kit will fix that. I hate you have the problem, but makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone. Weber needs to make adesign change to somehow lock these two sections, and add handles. IMO Thanks for letting me know.

    Great mod! That's a good way to get hurt if you were not paying attention and pushing along and it pop off like that! Helps to stay safer and I also like the rubber piece so that it is not metal on metal! One question I do have, would you need to remove the brackets prior to cooking to keep the rubber from melting to the smoker? Handles should be an addition that should be provided by them regardless!

      Under normal conditions I wouldn't. However two examples for me would be if it starts raining, I roll the cooker under an extra large umbrella. Another reason is during winter months and shorter daylight, I roll the cooker underneath the floodlight to video the end of the cook. These are the type things TH-cam cooks do to bring content to viewers who shake their f-ing head.
