The example below is India...but Asia represents 2/3rds of power development in the world. Cheaper than coal In 2018, India’s “levelized” cost of solar-power generation-an analysis removing the impact of direct subsidies and figuring in the costs of construction and financing for a new plant-fell to 14% below that of coal, the first time anywhere in the world that generating solar was cheaper than coal on that basis, according to international energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie. India’s national energy plan doesn’t anticipate construction of new coal power plants for at least several years. Even state-controlled Coal India, one of the world’s largest coal-producing companies, in November said it planned a pilot solar project as it navigated a future with less coal. Across Asia, a region expected to account for two-thirds of the world’s new power demand during the next two decades, price declines will make wind and solar combined 17% cheaper than coal by 2030 on a levelized basis, says Wood Mackenzie. In India, solar generation will be almost 50% cheaper, it projects. www.wsj.com/articles/solar-power-is-beginning-to-eclipse-fossil-fuels-11581964338

Mark Hemsworth it isn't about which form of energy is cheaper, the fact is solar is not green due to the sheer amount of mining and coal burning needed to create the infrastructure for it. Your article details a plant that can power the equivalent of a small US town. If we look early in the docu and see the solar array that purportedly could only run about ten US homes, the scale of the one in India would have to be massive. Extrapolate that to running a country or the world? Impossible. Population and energy usage reduction are the most realistic solutions i think.

@soldierofvanity nice but this quote says nothing. Basic laws of ecology state that the energy loss from each trophic level to the next is approximately 90%, i.e., you waste 90% of the energy (nutrients in the plants) by passing them through animals. It's very simple, really.

Will Man Ruin the Earth Beyond Repair? “A generation is going, and a generation is coming, but the earth remains forever.”-KING SOLOMON, 11TH CENTURY B.C.E. * To the ancient Bible writer, the fleeting nature of man stood in sharp contrast with the permanence of the earth. Indeed, for thousands of years, generations have come and gone, and yet the planet Earth has proved to be remarkably resilient and stable in its ability to host life-until now. The years since World War II have been dubbed by some as the Great Acceleration. In a single lifetime, people have seen remarkable advances in transportation, communication, and other technologies, which have brought unprecedented economic changes. Many enjoy a standard of living once thought impossible. In the meantime, the earth’s population has nearly tripled. All of this, however, has not come without cost. Human activities are said to be pushing the earth beyond its natural cycles. In fact, some scientists say we have entered a new geological epoch called the Anthropocene-an age in which humans are making an increasingly notable impact on the planet. The Bible foretold a time when man would ‘ruin the earth.’ (Revelation 11:18) Some wonder if we are living in such a time. How much further damage will be done? Is there a point of no return? Indeed, will man ruin the earth beyond repair? A POINT OF NO RETURN? Is the earth headed for a point of no return? Some scientists feel that the effect of changes can be difficult to predict. Because of this, they are concerned that we might be approaching “tipping points” where sudden and unanticipated climate changes could bring disastrous results. Consider, for example, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Some believe that with sustained global warming, there is a point where the melt of this ice sheet could be irreversible. This is because ice cover naturally reflects the sun’s rays. But as the ice sheet thins and shrinks, the ocean below, which is less reflective, is eventually exposed. The dark ocean surface absorbs more heat, which in turn leads to greater melting. A self-feeding, runaway cycle could be created. The resulting rise in sea levels from the meltwater could spell disaster for hundreds of millions of people. MOUNTING ECOLOGICAL DEBT Various road maps have been drawn up to deal with the “planetary emergency” we now face. One long-standing strategy has been called sustainable development, which means promoting economic and social growth within the ecological limits of the planet. What have been the results? Sadly, like the global financial debt crisis, earth’s ecological debt continues to mount unabated. Humans continue to consume our planet’s resources faster than these can be replenished naturally. Can something be done? One ecologist frankly acknowledged: “In a sense, we don’t have any clue how to manage the planet successfully.” The situation very much fits the Bible’s assessment: “It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step.”-Jeremiah 10:23. On the other hand, the Bible assures us that God, the Creator, will not allow man to bankrupt the planet environmentally. At Psalm 115:16, we read: “The earth [God] has given to the sons of men.” Yes, our planet is a “good gift” from our heavenly Father. (James 1:17) Would we expect God’s gift to be temporary in nature, as though it came with an expiration date? Of course not! That is evident from the inherent design of our planet. WHAT THE CREATOR PURPOSES The Bible book of Genesis tells in great detail how God carefully crafted the earth. Initially, the earth was described as “formless and desolate, and there was darkness upon the surface.” Yet, specific mention is made of “waters”-essential for life-existing on the planet. (Genesis 1:2) God then said: “Let there be light.” (Genesis 1:3) Evidently the sun’s rays penetrated the atmosphere, and there came to be light visible on earth for the first time. The formation of dry land and seas is then recounted. (Genesis 1:9, 10) Next, “grass, seed-bearing plants and trees yielding fruit” made their appearance. (Genesis 1:12) Elements needed for processes and cycles that are vital for life-such as photosynthesis-were thus in place. What was the purpose behind such extensive preparation? The ancient prophet Isaiah described God as “the One who formed the earth, its Maker who firmly established it, who did not create it simply for nothing, but formed it to be inhabited.” (Isaiah 45:18) Clearly, God’s purpose is for the earth to be inhabited by man forever. Sadly, man has misused God’s beautiful gift to the point of ruination. Yet, the Creator’s purpose has not changed. A man of old said: “God is not a mere man who tells lies, nor a son of man who changes his mind. When he says something, will he not do it?” (Numbers 23:19) In fact, rather than allow the earth to be ruined, the time is rapidly approaching for God to “bring to ruin those ruining the earth.”-Revelation 11:18. EARTH FOREVER OUR HOME Jesus Christ in his famous Sermon on the Mount said: “Happy are the mild-tempered, since they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5) Later in that same sermon, Jesus revealed the means by which the earth would be rescued from ruin. He instructed his followers to pray: “Let your Kingdom come. Let your will take place, as in heaven, also on earth.” Yes, God’s Kingdom, or government, will accomplish God’s purpose for the earth.-Matthew 6:10. Regarding the remarkable changes the Kingdom will bring, God declares: “Look! I am making all things new.” (Revelation 21:5) Does this mean that God will replace the earth with a new one? No, for there is really nothing inherently wrong with our planet. Rather, God will do away with those responsible for the planetary crisis, “those ruining the earth,” that is, the present-day human system with its governmental structure. This will be replaced by “a new heaven and a new earth”-a new heavenly government, God’s Kingdom, ruling over a new earthly society.-Revelation 21:1. To eliminate the ecological debt caused by man, God will rebalance the ecological budget, so to speak. Describing what God will do, the psalmist was inspired to write: “You care for the earth, making it abundantly fruitful and very rich.” With a regulated climate and, above all, God’s blessing, the earth will become a paradise yielding plenty of food.-Psalm 65:9-13. According to his secretary Pyarelal, Mohandas Gandhi, the late spiritual leader of India, observed: “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need but not for every man’s greed.” God’s Kingdom will address the root cause of earth’s problems by bringing about a change in people’s hearts. The prophet Isaiah foretold that under Kingdom rule, people “will not cause any harm or any ruin” to one another or to the earth. (Isaiah 11:9) In fact, millions of people today from all walks of life are already learning about God’s elevated standards. They are being taught to love God and neighbor, to show a thankful spirit, to care for the environment, to conserve natural resources, and to lead a life supportive of the Creator’s purpose. They are being prepared for life in a paradise earth.-Ecclesiastes 12:13; Matthew 22:37-39; Colossians 3:15. The earth is far too precious to end up in environmental bankruptcy The creation account in Genesis concludes with the words: “God saw everything he had made, and look! it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31) Truly, the earth is far too precious to end up in environmental bankruptcy. We are comforted in knowing that our planet’s future rests safely in the hands of our loving Creator, Jehovah God. He promises: “The righteous will possess the earth, and they will live forever on it.” (Psalm 37:29) May you be counted among “the righteous,” who will call earth their eternal home. Man’s Mismanagement of Our Planet Atmosphere. “There is unequivocal evidence that Earth’s lower atmosphere, ocean, and land surface are warming . . . The dominant cause of the warming since the 1950s is human activities.”-American Meteorological Society, 2012. Land. “Nearly 50% of the land surface has been transformed by direct human action, with significant consequences for biodiversity, nutrient cycling, . . . and climate.”-Global Change and the Earth System. Oceans. “Around 85% of global fish stocks are over-exploited, depleted, fully exploited or in recovery from exploitation.”-BBC, September 2012. Biodiversity. “Many scientists think . . . the blame for [the next mass extinction], perhaps the fastest in Earth’s history, falls firmly on the shoulders of humans.”-From science.nationalgeographic.com. The Zone of Life What is the “zone of life,” or biosphere? According to NASA, it is “the portion of Earth and its atmosphere that can support life.” Like the shell of an egg, the biosphere is a very thin layer, or zone, that encompasses our planet. The biosphere consists of living things and the environment-the atmosphere, the land, and the oceans-from which they derive the energy and nutrients needed for life. For instance, plants capture solar energy and use it to convert carbon dioxide, water, and minerals into oxygen and food. Humans and animals take in oxygen and food and return carbon dioxide and other matter to the system. And the cycle repeats itself. Thus, the biosphere can sustain life indefinitely. For good reason, then, God is described as “the One who established the productive land by his wisdom.” (Jeremiah 10:12) As one Bible scholar observed, “the habitable part of the earth is admirably fitted for the use and service of man.”

(While watching this movie I was reminded of the somewhat recent moves by the Sierra Club to label John Muir - who did so much to save the redwood forests - a white supremacist. This together with its support of burning "wood chips" (forests) in the name of saving the environment shows the true colors of the Sierra Club.). My eyes were opened to a lot of things I didn't know as well, although none of it was surprising.
@@betsyj59 I've kept my messenger notifications from Sierra Club active post documentary... and each time one comes through it reminds me of their hypocrisy.
@@betsyj59 I hundred percent agree with your feelings on the killing of the ancient Joshua trees! That was just gruesome and enraging. The capitalistic mind loves to classify deserts (and swamps) as "wastelands" so they can exploited and abused in a whole variety of ways (nuke tests, military exercises, uranium mines, off-road vehicles, garbage dumps, toxic waste and radioactive waste dumps and so on...). Even the ancient forests that I, and Muir, love(d) so much were up until very recently (and some still see them this way amazingly) were considered by many to be biological deserts (see a slam on both the forests and the deserts) and cellulose cemeteries and were considered wasteful. It was considered morally right and even morally imperative to cut these forests down and replace them with spindly overstocked monoculture tree farms/plantations where the trees would never be allowed to reach anywhere near their maximum ages and therefore would never be able to provide the ecologically stability and resilience that ancients forests do. Their impacts on carbon cycling and water cycling and quality and biodiversity, much more manageable forest fires and so on... are incredibly beneficial to life as we know it.

That's the thing. Everyone likes to rally and go to Earth Day festivals and all that. Well, not me personally but I digress. But once the rally and Earth Day is over? They get back to buying stuff and checking their instagrams and driving their cars to the mall. Very few are highly serious about these matters.
What does this empty statement mean? The only way to change is to wipe large portions of the population from the Earth and go back to early agriculture type living. Are you willing to do that? Oh by the way before the last 100 years about half of children died before the age of 5, our use of energy, mostly fossil fuels has changed that. Be my guest but my guess is you still want your hot shower.
Yes, GM killed the electric auto though those who were leasing them wanted to buy them, but GM falsely said no one was interested. Though GM started to get back in the game, they're quitting again because of weak sales. The real issue is that technology is rapidly advancing, such that the newer electric cars have greater distance capability. Sweden is building an electric highway system so electrics can charge while driving, thus needing less batteries, decreasing the car's overall weight. New electrics with older tech, don't sell! A report this month shows Germany's emissions hit a 70 year low as it reduces reliance on coal in 2023. Some countries, the US included, are dragging their feet. Things are possible, where there's a will, there's a way!
Yet Germany is again after polish land to acquire its massive and mostly untapped coal and other mineral resources. Already polish pres Tusk mostly of German blood gas banned the polish people from some river ways and some as yet but likely German she'll company gas bought many of the polish mineral water sources for profit. Germany like girre is not a leader but a pirate under other name with no concern for the green movement or the planet... it comes down to simple greed. I am scottish BTW just not asleep.
The true Green Movement only exists amongst the common folks. Big business and politics are focused on a different shade of green, dollar bill green. The only color that truly matters to ALL commercialised movements.

Don't get duped into thinking the only reason we have not solved these problems is greed. Ideologues love to have an enemy to fight but if the acknowledge that its physics that makes environmental demands so difficult/impossible well then there is no great Satan to agitate against.
I am not a physicist, however from my education in the automotive business I learned this: Every time energy is exerted there has to be a heat exchange. Examples: Electric motors get warm when creating a rotary motion. Batteries get warm when charging or discharging powering lights and electric motors. Light bulbs get warm creating light. Ovens get hot to cook food. Two objects moving against each other (Rotating or sliding) create heat requiring an organic petroleum product to lubricate and keep cool. All forms of transportation (forward motion) require some form of a heat exchange to achieve this including internal combustion engines, electric motors, or hydrogen (which must be created retrieving hydrogen from water with a heat exchange process.) Burning of some type of fuel is required to heat a home whether it is a local source like coal, natural gas or electricity remotely created by burning other fuels like coal or natural gas at a remote location. Manufacturing items like melting iron ore with coke or natural gas to create steel. converting organic petroleum into molded plastic products. So where am I going with this statement? It is simple. For humans to survive on earth there has to be a consumption of some products like organic petroleum, vegetation (ash from burned vegetation makes excellent fertilizer that replenishes forests after a fire), or anything else that can be burned to produce any form of energy. The question is as this documentary demonstrates, when will sourced items that must be consumed (Burned) run out? This ia an excellent video. I was expecting praises and putting green energy on an alter to be prayed to. In conclusion something has to be consumed (burned) for humans to survive. It all started when humans burned things to keep warm and to cook food as they found uncooked animals were not good.

Remember folks that this film is from a skeptical view and about the exploitation by industries of new ideas being brought to the market. Like all new things getting it started is sloppy. It's also publicly misleading by environmentalists and industry, in order to get funding. Like at the beginning of the age of communication with 6 gauge wire, we are now using fiber optics. Where we ran cars with 6 miles to the gallon we now go 40+ miles per gallon. In the future, we could replace all the fossil fuel in the production of the equipment to produce renewables. We are only infants with this renewable stuff. However, we know there is a problem with the climate, and any step forward no matter how cumbersome, or on the wrong track it might be, teaches us along the way. I am just sad that they have not touched on geothermal energy production. The most promising of all the renewables.
I investigated this clip- th-cam.com/video/wN6I_-zDNOA/w-d-xo.html - 360 has about 100 donars, and yes they were supported by a trust fund early on, a trust fund that has given a lot of money away. But the case is should we let rich people decide where their money goes or tax them?

Not when a significant portion of what's shown is misleading or even blatantly false. The film correctly shows that many forms of "Green" Energy still aren't that green (yet- they get slightly better every year). But it neglects to mention they already produce around 1/10th to 1/20th the CO2 of burning Coal directly (rather than using it to make solar panels and wind turbines). The film correctly states that Green Energy has in most countries failed to displace fossil fuels. But it fails entirely to examine the reasons why: growing populations and growing per-person energy consumption, leading to the false impression "Green" Energy didn't help at all (if the same amount of capacity had been added solely in Coal and Natural Gas, things would be EVEN WORSE). Ultimately, the most correct thing said in the entire film was that Capitalism is a big part of the root problem. Yet it never once talks about Environmental Socialism (where private ownership of Capital is abolished and a variety of strong discouragement to excessive consumption, and to pollution, are imposed on the state corporations and Worker's CoOp's that come to own all Capital...), and takes the very simplistic view that the Environmental leaders went in with sinister motives rather than the much more likely scenario they slowly sold out their beliefs little by little without ever realizing it, to Capitalism.

@phred Yes, the point of doing that is to save energy & materials. With 1% of the number of moving parts, no direct fossil fuels & decreasing-toward-zero indirect FFs, EVs are the way to do that. We’re about there now. A football-sized bit of metal is used up during an EV’s life, which is considerably longer (1½-3x) than an ICEV's. An ICEV uses 4500 gal. (17,000 litres) of oil, a stack of oil barrels 300 feet tall (90m). ICEVs burn 300-400 times more material than are used by an EV, & ICEVs’ castoffs are all deadly pollution. A BEV already uses 58% less energy than an ICEV and emits 64% less CO2. It is certainly sad about those orangutans and what is also sad is the paradox here. I think the documentary accurately identified the issue at the heart of it all, humans fear and inability to face the reality of mortality. So how do the authors finish the film? They conclude it by tapping into that same fear and thus enable the disgust of death to continue. Perhaps that paradox is necessary. After watching this documentary by Moore, who I don't really like because he is also quite hypocritical at times (though thanks for making it freely available) is that the solution is fairly straight forward but capitalism in particular will not like it. What is that solution? Reduce consumption, stop wasting energy, plant forrests and reduce the human population through a one child policy. At least we can experience parenthood this way which might be better than a debatable alternative. I wonder for example if that alternative will be the corona virus vaccine. Is it's goal not vaccinate against a manufactured epidemic, but really to be the method of sterilizing the human population.

But how often are coal or other fossil fuel plants being replaced vs. solar/wind or other renewables?
@@scsi_joe yes ,it is happening, but the trend is very recent...this documentary really focused on years ago. The example below is India...but Asia represents 2/3rds of power development in the world.
Cheaper than coal
In 2018, India’s “levelized” cost of solar-power generation-an analysis removing the impact of direct subsidies and figuring in the costs of construction and financing for a new plant-fell to 14% below that of coal, the first time anywhere in the world that generating solar was cheaper than coal on that basis, according to international energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie.

Will Man Ruin the Earth Beyond Repair?
“A generation is going, and a generation is coming, but the earth remains forever.”-KING SOLOMON, 11TH CENTURY B.C.E. *
To the ancient Bible writer, the fleeting nature of man stood in sharp contrast with the permanence of the earth.

MOUNTING ECOLOGICAL DEBT
Various road maps have been drawn up to deal with the “planetary emergency” we now face.
WHAT THE CREATOR PURPOSES
The Bible book of Genesis tells in great detail how God carefully crafted the earth.
EARTH FOREVER OUR HOME
Jesus Christ in his famous Sermon on the Mount said: “Happy are the mild-tempered, since they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5) Later in that same sermon, Jesus revealed the means by which the earth would be rescued from ruin.

The earth is far too precious to end up in environmental bankruptcy
The creation account in Genesis concludes with the words: “God saw everything he had made, and look! it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31) Truly, the earth is far too precious to end up in environmental bankruptcy. We are comforted in knowing that our planet’s future rests safely in the hands of our loving Creator, Jehovah God. He promises: “The righteous will possess the earth, and they will live forever on it.” (Psalm 37:29) May you be counted among “the righteous,” who will call earth their eternal home.
Man’s Mismanagement of Our Planet
Atmosphere.
The Zone of Life

What is the “zone of life,” or biosphere?
We are fucked.

Climate change
soil erosion, compaction and loss of fertility
Ocean Acidification
Biosimplicfication by Western-style Agriculture
Deforestation
Loss of freshwater supplies
Sea Level Rise contaminating acquifers
Thawing of the clathrate - frozen Methane (CH4) in the permafrost
Growing ranges of parasitic and pathogens
Ecotoxicology of Sea Level Rise, as man-made waste voids are infiltrated by the rising waters

Thermo-industrial capitalism is going away shortly, whether we like it or not, and human population is likely to shrink for material reasons... But it is highly unlikely that all humans would disappear, even in worst case scenarios. We are causing a mass extinction, but there will be survivors. If there are a few resilient small animals to eat after the disaster, there will be human hunter gatherers to hunt them..
The point being, the planet doesn't care ; people don't care about the planet either, they just care about preserving an environment suitable to them .

I have been an environmental educator, advocate, and activist for many years, and I had my eyes opened many times in this film.
Watching those 500 year old Joshua trees get pulverized in the name of "green energy" was more than angering, it was painful, heartbreaking.
Even the ancient forests that I, and Muir, love(d) so much were up until very recently (and some still see them this way amazingly) were
considered by many to be biological deserts (see a slam on both the forests and the deserts) and cellulose cemeteries and were considered wasteful.

@@mape7467 Uhh, no. There is no climate change science billionaire class; only a fossil fuel one.

This is such a biased outlook on the big picture. We are all part of the problem! Blaming a set of individuals who have lived a less amount of time on the earth than previous generations is borderline ignorant. Regardless of the amount of consumption at the present moment, previous generations will always have consumed more of the earths resources, new generations just add to the problem. Yes it’s a battle for renewable resources and cutting down on our global footprint, but the main issue is our growth as a global population and not having enough resources to fill that need. If you think people born after 1996 who are just now 25 and settling into adulthood are the main contributors to our global crisis, and not the countless generations beforehand, then i don’t know what to tell you man, it’s just shifting the blame on the new guy.

Let's do away with designed obsolescence to start with. Think of the energy and resources that would be saved if your cars lasted for 30+ years.
That's improving even more as grids get more renewable, & primary energy (steel-making, mining vehicles, etc.) gets electrified.

Those orangutans left with one tree. F^cking sad, man.
