If you are old enough, and have been around the block a few times, this song really pulls at the heart. So much meaning and so much depth in such a short song.
I enter my 8th decade in 37 hours time in London, nervously and I PROMISE you that this beautiful song becomes more and more relevant as you get older and lose friends and family, who you have known all your life. Also, imagine being,say,15 years old and you have heroes in Sport,Films,Music,Theatre etc.Realistically,to have made a mark in their chosen fields they will then be around 10 years older than you,say,25 years old which means when you hit "70" they are "80" with all that entails..
@@Isleofskye I will be 71 in 7 days time and I won't try to deny that I just cannot do even the heavy lifting I could do a year ago. I have explained this to senior management and she understands that I am not 65 any more but still cracks the whip just like she must have done in a past life in ancient Egypt! Getting to 70 is quite a big deal but have another cup of tea and an extra slice of birthday cake and you'll soon get over it and feel fine again👍😀
Lennon considered this to be his " first major piece of work. " Lennon asked George Martin to add a piano passage for the song. He composed a baroque-based solo which elevated the material immensely. Ringo's drum pattern is uniquely fitting.

Such a beautiful song - so cleverly written and the perfect launchpad for everybody's personal backstory. Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. Great reaction fellas
John wrote just over half of the Beatles songs. There were nearly 300 songs in their catalog (as a group) and John had about 136 to Paul's 131 and the rest were written by George, Ringo or all 4 (like Flying from Mystery tour. )
Since the Break up, Paul had released 50 albums, soundtracks and arias in 50 years since the Beatles. He has a never ending gift. John, George, and Ringo, never had that kind of output.
George Martin, (the producer) played the harpsichord on this one. Although all 4 Beatles could play piano, they all could only play very basic "Key of C" chords and notes. (all white keys only). All of them got better at piano as the years went on, but this early, they had to have someone play it for them.
McCartney was interested in classical music at the time, including J S Bach's counterpoint and was inspired to use some baroque/classical style melodies. Hence the 'harpsichord' solo.
John started the Beatles. Would we be listening to McCartney today if he never met Lennon. I’m glad they met & produced the best catalogue in music history. The Beatles were four guys, John, Paul, George Harrison & Ringo Starr. The original supergroup. A few years before Cream.
To truly experience the Beatles you can't cherry pick your way back and forth through their albums. To appreciate all of their music you have to start with the first album and work your way forward and grow as the Beatles grew in their journey of making music. Also turn your mind off, relax and float down stream as you listen.
I remember where I was and the exact moment when I realize the harpsichord bridge in this song was lifted straight out of Pachelbel's Canon in D Major; a blend of Beatles and classical music. (It's not piano; it's harpsichord, a different more ancient keyboard instrument.) OMG! Did the Beatles invent 'sampling'?!
Personnel According to Walter Everett:[21] The Beatles John Lennon - double-tracked vocal, rhythm guitar Paul McCartney - harmony vocal, bass guitar George Harrison - harmony vocal, lead guitar Ringo Starr - drums Additional musician George Martin - piano, tambourine.
Lennon and McCartney were the principle songwriters. Usually the person who contributed the most to the writing of the song is the person who sang lead. In this case it was more Lennon in the composition and that’s why he sang lead on this. McCartney definitely contributed but this was more John. It is so beautiful. Thank you for a great reaction to this. 👏👏🥰
Guy"s don"t know if anyone mentioned this in the comment"s,but this song is so great, that Ozzy Osbourne did a cover on it,check it out on utube!,one of my favorite Beatles songs!
Rubber Soul is the album where the Beatles entered their own stratosphere. Before Rubber Soul they were merely the greatest band on the planet. For another great John song from Rubber Soul, I suggest Norwegian Wood or Nowhere Man. For a great Paul song from the same album, I suggest Michelle or You Won't See Me or I'm Looking Through You. For all of these songs, it's better to listen to the album version before you try any live versions
You need to understand how things were back in the 60s, all songs back then, were short for the radio. You have to get things in context. Also studio time was short, bands had very little time to record.
not early beatles. middle beatles. Should have listened to the remix when using headphones. panning is less distracting people in the comments hate on gabe so much lol, but really, he's come around a lot on The Beatles. He still has a bit of skepticism, but he's not outright saying, "I don't get it" like during the first reactions. That's a character arc!
Unfortunately we as a society feel we need to pick McCartney/Lennon/Harrison. But they all needed each other to pull out the greatness. Their solo careers proved that
There's a TH-cam channel called Mike Williams Sage of Quay. He is under the ridiculous notion that this song and many other Beatles pre-1966 songs were written by ghost writers. What absolute nonsense! This has Lennon stamped all over it. Rubber Soul is a great album.
This guy needs more Lennon. Without Lennon the Beatles would have been obscure and boring. Lennon was the driving force. He is also the founding member.

Just about my all time favourite Beatles song and I have been a fan since 1964.

Imagine writing a song this mature, beautiful and introspective only when you were 24 years old. John Lennon was an excellent writer
My funeral song - I love it.

This is definitely my favorite John Beatle song.
I danced with my daughter to this song at her wedding
Next station: Strawberry fields forever
Lennon is the lead vocalist and principal songwriter. Amazing song.
NICK, you need to play for GABE, "FOR NO ONE" by the Beatles. I want "IN MY LIFE" played at my funeral.
I was 14 when this song came out on the Rubber Soul album in 1965. It's one of my (many) favourite Beatles songs
In My Life and Eleanor Rigby are top,top songs of theirs👌
AM radio required tracks to be under 3 min. To allow for more ads. When FM radio entered in the 70’s longer tracks were more common.

The piano solo was Pachelbel's Canon, and it does show up in a lot of places, including commercials.
That was their producer, George Martin on the piano.
"Tomorrow Never Knows" is just under 3 minutes.
Would Gabe call that a "jingle"?

The Beatles
John Lennon - double-tracked vocal, rhythm guitar
Paul McCartney - harmony vocal, bass guitar
George Harrison - harmony vocal, lead guitar

McCartney said he set Lennon's lyrics to music from beginning to end, taking inspiration from songs by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles.
Great reactions.
Ringo's drumming is spot on.
I think I'd like this played at my funeral!

This song (which is too short) and 'Help' are my favourite Beatles tracks. I believe that it was a harpsicord or something similar not a piano.
It was a piano but it was recorded at half speed so on playback it has the quality similar to a harpsichord.

I agree with Gabe...i always thought Paul was the genius then i heard imagine and then i swayed toward John...
Got to love a bit of harpsichord before going to work.
No harpsichord in this song.
George Martin played the piano for the solo, which was sped up to get that effect.
Not convinced of that. Sounds fun, but why do all that just to sound like a Harpsichord. I’m sticking with it was a harpsichord.
And I don’t care what google says. It was a Harpsichord in the adjacent studio (Studio 2) which was also used for Little piggy’s”
@@andrewdoubtfire4700 And you don't care what George Martin says, I presume?
Not sure of the exact numbers but Lennon had about 170 vocal leads with McCartney about 10 less.

Bette Midler did it so much better with her cover.

Like her but this version can not be topped. Any painting of the Mona Lisa is just a copy, no matter how "good" it is.
Out of The Beatles catalogue of 230 songs,I would suggest only Joe Cocker has topped their version of any of their songs,my friend.
