      it is good to at least scrub the side of the rubber where the chain is since chain lube and other things may have been sprayed there

      Yes you can wash your bike with a shampoo weekly if you like, but there would be no need to reapply the wax weekly. Depending on wax or sealant you use, you have 2-6 months of protection. Now if your washing your car every week, make sure to keep your chain lubed frequently.

    I've never washed my sportbike. Like never washed it with a hose like that. That bike might look nice but pull those fairing and look at the hard to get areas and I bet it's all fucked up. My bike is a 04 and looks pretty clean and I don't even do much to clean it. Best thing is to just wipe a bike down with a microfiber after every ride, unless it's really dirty. And for bugs I let a warm towel soak on them for 10-15 minutes to soften them up.

    Still looking for a definitive guide on this. Everyone does it differently. What about electronics? what do you cover? Many videos say to clean/ lube the chain before washing? WHY? Wont water wash away any lube? Handle bar switches are not waterproof. I know motorcycles are made for rain, but ever take one apart that has some mileage? Dust and dirt gets in there and adding water created mud or more buildup over time. You can never get it all out. Power washing can force water into exposed connectors, causing electrical shorts as well as expedite corrosion or rust...etc. I can go on and on. I like this video, but my brain thinks there has to be a better way to keep a bike clean and preserve its longevity. I liked this video, but as I look to doing my first ever wash on my new (110 miles) motorcycle (my first bike ever), I'm looking for clear and concise answers.

    I haven't washed a bike with anything but a light spray cleaner (Meguire's EZ clean) and a microfiber cloth, or a plastic razor and a citrus cleaner for the really stuck on stuff. I haven't put water on a bike in over 10 years, and if I do end up in a rain situation, I take the wheels off and clean the hubs and use chain cleaner and apply fresh lube to both the axles and the chain/sprockets. But maybe I'm a bit too obsessive, idk.

    NEVER EVER use a power or orbital polisher EVER, why ? because no mater how good you wash is if you get a bit of grit on the pad there WILL be a shit load of damage caused to the paint well before you realise it , ONLY ever polish along the line of the panel and doing so you will not end up with swirl marks .

    It's generally not considered a good idea to use a pressure washer on bikes. At least not a powerful one. They have been known to break seals and get water into the electronics and places you really don't want water. Apart from that, the safety aspect and separating what brushes you use is a good mention. Had I not watched this I likely would've made that mistake by just trying to wring them out each time😅

      Thank you :) I am a part time professional detailer so I do know a thing or two about proper washing techniques, as much as motorcycles, detailing is another one of my hobbies :) I wish I could talk more about paint correction etc, and I may, but it would be out of the scope for this channel! * thinking about it, maybe I will make a video specifically for motorcycles :)

    • @ALLDAYANTHONY

      Haha I think we would be friends then! I also detail on the side and use a PC 7424. I keep my evo flawless, but the speed triple is black and we all know how black is to maintain, plus I have no idea how much clear coat triumph used on that thing. So correcting on my bike isn't my top priority. I know what you mean though, most motorcyclist aren't as OCD about paint as long as the bike is running haha. Whereas for me, that shit haunts me in my dreams

    The reason i know about this is from personal experience... I used a pressure washer. I had an issue with my starter... Turns out it was the starter switch. Comment from kawasaki engineer when he found out i was using a jet washer was.. *dont use a jet washer you can force water where you don't want it* also the waxes within the washes depending on what type of wash you use can lubricate the disks. So try to keep as much off your disks as possible.. PERIOD!! granted over a short while it will burn off. But hey every time you have to make an emergency stop doesn't wait until your brakes have recovered.. It might just happen before your brakes have managed to flash off the deposits... Also you say you are a professional detailer.. You are showing and advising people how to use the tools of your profession.. Something you are trained in and experienced in using. In the wrong hands and trust me the majority of people watching your video thinking hey what a great idea ARE the wrong hands. Would you let a person wbo has never used a powered paint buffer loose on your ducati after only watching your video... Erm no i suspect not. And the same goes for jet washing.. Some idiot watching your vid will likely jet wash at full throttle forcing water where it shouldn't... I am an engineer for a living not a professional detailer, on that bike you know about paint and Polish, i know about the rest of it.... Ummm i also train and write training and safety procedures for a living. Before explaining how the correct way is to wash your bike during this you should explain that you are professionally trained in the use of a hand buffing machine and you don't recommend using one unless trained... You should show how to use cloths, that way unless you're a complete idiot you wont damage your bike. Etc etc and so on. Without sounding like a hypocrite i also still jet wash my bike... But on low power and i pick and choose where i aim it, i also bag up my switch gear. I also bag my disks. I still clean them after, you should explain in your vid similar, dont jet wash Electrics, joints on the bike, bearings, rotating and moving parts, etc etc, you might think that's obvious to you but it wont be to others, your bike is designed to repel inclement weather yes.. But not water that has the potential to be forced at it ovet 100 psi. (you know where i am coming from) I agree with getting as much water on your bike as possible to remove any grit as you will not be happy if it looks like zorro had been let loose on yout paintwork.. Dont get me wrong i enjoy your vids, i am subscribed. But i dont agree with your video saying this is the correct way to wash your bike... Simply because of the tools you are using... It might be the correct way for a professional detailer trained and experienced but its not the correct way for the average joe, simply because after investing in buffer then wrecking his paint with it he will wish he hadn't seen your video but by then its too late. This is the only issue for me. Other than that i really do enjoy your channel.

    • @carswithsonduren
      @carswithsonduren  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alan Roberts right and I appreciate what you're saying and I am glad that your subscriber and that you enjoyed the videos but I think we might have a little disconnect in our opinions. I made this video under the assumption not the average Joe is not watching TH-cam videos and getting other sources of information on how to Simply wash a motorcycle. My assumption is the people that are searching up on TH-cam how to wash their motorcycle want to do it the proper way which this video says in the title. This is the proper / professional way. Now I agree you have to be very careful with the pressure washer and I state that in the video. But I have used the pressure washer on countless of Motorcycles Cars Etc and never faced the problem when used with caution. I do agree I should put a disclaimer to be extremely careful using a dual action power machine. I do have a separate video which I'm sure you are aware of on how to properly polish your motorcycle or car. Thank you for the passionate comments at least we are having good discussion :-)

    The only thing i dissagree with is using any kind of cleaner on the tires as i could make the tires slippery. I myself get my bike detailed in burlington at KDetailPlus as they use zero chemicals only micro fiber towls and steam. I recommend at the end of the riding season to stop by this place as steam can clean places that just ordinary soap and water cannot get.

      depending on your bike and how exposed your chain is you may want to go ahead and apply some lube after the washing process. in this case here I did not but depending on if your chain is dry and stripped of its Loop you may need to re lube Lube your chain :) *text to speech forgive me for the typos

    what about motorcycles with exposed engines? I read that it's better to avoid having water interacting with the engine itself because it can flood it.

    • @carswithsonduren
      @carswithsonduren  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lidnley Carmona Hey Lidnley few of my friends also had the same question. As long as you're keeping your good distance from the motorcycle and are not using a pinpoint pressure setting and instead using the fan setting you will be fine. Again just mentally avoid spraying directly at any intakes xcetera. Treat the pressure washer in your scenario as a way to Simply pre-soak the bike instead of pressure washing.

      Hey welcome to the channel! I would actually highly suggest you always try to pressure wash as much of the dirt and grime off as possible before touching it with any brush or mitt. Though once you've done that yes a brush and a mitt is the next step just be cautious not to rub so much of that mud and dirt into the paint 👍

    Great "how to" video!
    I ride year round and live in Ohio so I'm riding in rain, some snow and sometimes a mix of road salt and chemicals. I'm not interested in "best" appearance during the winter, but I am interested in knowing your thoughts about the best way to wash and prevent corrosion when the weather isn't great. I'm also wondering what you think the best way to remove light corrosion is? I have very small amounts of corrosion on the brake rotors, on the exhaust and the rear sprocket. Thanks for any ideas your have!

      I know this is a very late reply, but I highly recommend ACF-50 or similar products to anyone who reads this and thinks about how to prevent corrosion. You can apply them in a mist (cover the brakes and wheels first!) and you will get excellent protection against salt and other corrosive agents. Some people don't even bother to wash the bike and just apply ACF-50 (or again some other product) and their bikes are rust-free...

    Umm. The correct way in your opinion.. I certainly won't dislike but... Jet washing is ok providing you keep the pressure down.. You wouldn't jet wash under your car bonnet for the same reason you wouldn't jet wash your bike... Electrics... And possibly forcing water where you don't want it.. You should at least bag your switch gear... Jet washing that can cause it to fail. And as for recommending to use a powered buffer on a motorcycle are you nuts? Get some elbow grease and do it the hard way.. One slip or moment of distraction and the backup pad of that buffer will wreck your paintwork or something else. And back to polishing.. Micro fibre cloth per section of bike then put that in the dirty bag to be washed. Use several cloths to buff just in case you do pick up a bit of grit. And how about using brake cleaner on the disks to clean off the additives that was in the washing solution, those additives reduce the performance of your brakes. I wouldn't want you washing my bike...

      Alan Roberts you actually think car wash solution residue on your rotors will degrade performance? You don't know what your talking about.

    • @carswithsonduren
      @carswithsonduren  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Alan Roberts an electric pressure washer at that distance and at that spread with a PSI of roughly 1600 or even 2000 will not cause any damage to your electronics. Most motorcycles are built knowing the fact that they made get caught in inclement weather. I am also a professional detailer. Using this Porter-Cable dual action polisher it is almost impossible to cause any damage to your fairings paint work. Dual action polishers are not dangerous even in novice hands like rotary polishers. Using your hands to polish your paint is like cutting your grass with scissors. I don't want to come off rude but I think you need to brush up on some of your knowledge on polishing and paint work especially with new products. Also the performance of your brakes will not degrade do to any leftover residue from car wash soap. Whatever possible residue remains will literally flash off instantly in the first few brake actuations.

Too much for a nicely painted street bike. Also, a pressure washer can work water into places you don’t want it, sealed bearings, etc.

    Very professional video. Picked up a tip on the grunge guard. However, the video lacks substance, basic. The bike was already clean. I commute 24k each year, and after a ride does not look like the initial condition of your steed, no effectiveness. As far as waxing, where? Removal of seat or any items to get at the paint not exposed? Residual wax removal from other portions not needing a polish or wax? Difference in polish and wax? Fairing removal? What is and is not waxed? Still a smooth video; just lacks real substance. It is more of a showcase of what is spent than real technique. Lovely bike though. Ahhh, that was what you were hunting. Sorry, just don't fit in the big money I got this and that demographic soaking up the rays. Still very professional and smooth. Just add some meat.

I would recommend making sure if it's an older bike you be careful around the wiring or any exposed wiring and for any bike around the chain especially if it has just been lubed. most new modern bikes you don't need to worry about too much anything important will be covered and sealed from water. General rule don't point a pressure washer to close to anything
