- Lucia marries Georgie and is made the mayor of Tilling,though Georgie is peeved to find that it gives him no standing and,on Lucia's orders,they must set an example by economizing.
Lucia is asked to select a Lady Mayoress,which has her female acquaintances vying with each other though Mrs Wyse seems to scupper her chances when her pet budgie,which she is wearing as an ornament on her hat after accidentally killing it,falls into her meal at the candidates' banquet.
Lucia decides there is only one obvious choice - Mapp,whom she can keep in check as her subordinate though Mapp is displeased by the unfortunate photo,taken by 'Quaint' Irene accompanying the newspaper account of her success.
She can derive some mirth from the fact that Lucia,championing the use of the bicycle in Tilling,gets done for speeding whilst riding one.
Saw this wonderful series years ago which inspired me to read all the books. This amazing ensemble acted it out in my head as I read. If you haven't read the books, you're missing bushels of hilarious LOL moments.
I too have read the books many times and I never tire of them or the television series. Wonderful casting.

I watched this wonderful series with my lovely late friend, Hillary. We would chatter all through it, commenting on the beautiful clothes, the witty expressions and the humour.
now you need to watch it and listen to the beautiful words too. :)
From the golden age of British TV before it became obsessed with reality shows and "celebrities" .

One of my all=-time faves! Brilliant cast of characters, wonderful story lines and the fashions of the times.i have re-watched several times as befits "Mapp and Lucia". RIP to the several cast. British tv's loss as well as to it's many fans.

@suekennedy1595 I was always massively impressed by the materials that Lucias clothes were made from... you know that was no cheap offcuts... did you also notice Divas hat, with flowers attached, taken from other old clothes

The BBC adaptation of this a few years back with Anna Chandler is my absolute favourite.
I find it difficult to choose. I grew up, and discovered the books through the original series. The later version took the stories and mixed them up in a big way. The Guru never appeared in Riseholme, and for purists things like that muddled the timeline up.

It was telling that Miranda Richardson was basing her performance on prunella scales😅
Miss Geraldine McEwan was really a beautiful actress
She was really fantastic wasn't she, oh how I wish I could have met her and interviewed her. Still, I DO have a letter from her, talking about EF Benson and the Mapp & Lucia characters.
Was not one of the actresses one of the Nuns as Reverend Mother in the Magdalene Sisters? Or in similar film about the Magdalene Laundries?

Geraldine McEwan and Prunella Scales could not have bettered, and neither could the brilliant Nigel Hawthorne. I absolutely agree that the books are wonderful, and incredibly camp, but this television series was the best television adaptation imaginable and worth watching time and again.

@@alidabaxter5849 The other adaptations are lacking. I think brilliant direction and casting were also in abundance when the muses whipped this little gem together. This adaptation is the setting of a timeless gem into a tiara Georgie would have been proud of.
