I agree that Sohyang is a really talented singer, but she is NOT the best in Korea or in Asia (like someone in the comments has suggested). I agree that she is the best in this list, but Korean vocalists such as 송창식, 양희은, 이선희 are all more accomplished vocally, and Chinese vocalists Liu Huan, Han Hong, and Sun Nan all exhibit more control of vocal technique. Yes, Sohyang has a great mix, but she is OFTEN pitchy, is tense more than her fans would like to admit, and she also doesn't have a developed lower chest register. Almost of all her unedited performances of the last two years (and maybe even in general) have instances where she goes off pitch, or is tense, or is otherwise not demonstrating the level of technical mastery you would expect from her if you simply read her fans' comments. I'm not hating on her--she really is a good vocalist. But to suggest that she is "by far" the greatest South Korean vocalist is wildly inaccurate.
Sohyang only gets pitchy when she is sick, which is acceptable cuz she is a cancer survivor and has to suffer from lung disease. She has just built up her own Academy along with write novels, so she isn't healthy most of the time. However, when she's at her best, I think noone in Asia can compare to her. I know all the Chinese singers u recommend, as I also often listen to them (my favorite is Han Hong). But when it comes to vocal technique, none of them can beat her, especially in high register, both mix and headvoice, supported and resonant. Judy Garland was practically a walking corpse before she died, and she still managed to give performances that vocally blew people away. Her singing was always diaphragmatic and on pitch, not to mention she could tackle complex vocal phrases in all of her registers with OUTSTANDING dynamic control. Now, about the Chinese singer statement, I don't know how you can consistently listen to Han Hong or Sun Nan (or ESPECIALLY Liu Huan) and not see how they have better command of vocal technique. Starting with Han Hong, as you referenced her directly, she is able to mix with resonance up to G#5 and support up to B5 while ALSO being able to phrase in her lower register (as low as c3). Most sopranos are lucky to even support G3 (Sohyang doesn't even do that consistently). But Han Hong not only supports MUCH lower than that, she phrases these notes, which requires much more breath control and vocal stamina. It should also be noted that Han Hong has massive resonance, and her head voice is stellar (which makes sense because she was trained at a classical conservatory). Her dynamic control is far superior to Sohyang's. Just listen to Sohyang's performance of "Memory," and you will see that she doesn't have the proper dynamic control to sing the song as intended. Not only that, she is forced to lower her larynx as high as A3 (which isn't that low, even for a soprano). I suggest you listen to Han Hong singing 我很丑. Here you will see the strong support behind her notes, which she carries all the way down to a phrased d3 and her resonance up to a phrased E5. This is INCREDIBLE for a soprano (or any other voice type, if we're being honest). Pay attention to the dynamic levels throughout the song. Sohyang usually stays in some form of forte, even when the piece she is singing requires delicacy. Notice how Han Hong is able to seamlessly transition through different registers and varying dynamic levels without losing vocal clarity. Her voice is always bright and pure, and she is able to masterfully round the sound of her notes, even in the upper register, and change her dynamic level without having to belt the notes. Sohyang is unable to do this, as she nearly always forces a change in dynamics by belting or mixing (or sometimes head voice). Now, yes, Sohyang is able to utilize her mix more in the upper register than Han Hong, and I applaud her for that, but it's often off-pitch. If you compare CONSISTENCY in their upper ranges, you will find that Han Hong (outside of a few performances from 2014) generally keeps her support in that range better, AND she stays on pitch. Sohyang fans cannot keep using her health as an example of her pitch problems as an excuse for her. Almost every vocalist has battles to overcome, but a solid foundation in technique will allow them to overcome these barriers most of the time. Now, you say that no one in Asia can compare with Sohyang when she's at her best. Then you tell me when Sohyang has given performances like the following: 1. Liu Huan 你是这样的人--Here you can see Liu Huan incorporate bel canto technique into a contemporary performance. The breath support required to pull off a piece of this depth with such smooth legato and also seamlessly tackle complex vocal phrases that often require abrupt changes in dynamic levels while never losing resonance is immense. Sohyang has never given a performance of this caliber. 2. Han Hong 你是这样的人--Here, singing the same song, Han Hong does much the same as Liu Huan, but makes the climax even more dramatic and bombastic. You can hear the clarity in her voice and the effect of her tidal-wave resonance. She is able to take on classical characteristics while maintaining largely contemporary technique because she has mastered her mix and completely utilizes the size of her dramatic voice. 3. Sun Nan 我期待--Here you can hear the resonance he is able to maintain in his upper mix and also get a glimpse at his admirable vocal stamina. Sohyang is often lauded for her upper mix--and she should be--but Sun Nan has greater stamina in his mix, and he is not pitchy like Sohyang. He also doesn't encounter the same tension issues that Sohyang is known to display (especially the tension she has when she descends from her mix). Not only that, Sun Nan has an even column of sound and three supported registers (from B2-D5). This is great for a tenor (or any voice type). 4. 양희은 금광의 예수--In this performance, 양희은, displays immaculate vocal control. Notice how beautifully smooth her legato is. Most vocalists, if they use legato at all, might use it in their mid registers, where vocal phrases come more easily. 양희은, however, manages to connect all of her phrases, even deep in her lower register, and she is able to resonate and project them with the full power of her dramatic voice. She also displays a great head voice and a fantastic moment of pure belting that's rare for someone of her musical background. 5. 송창식 푸르른 날--Like 양희은, 송창식 displays one of the smoothest legatos in contemporary music, and he is able to carry "classical" (for lack of a better term) resonance up to G4. He also masterfully tackles quick vocal phrases and resonates really every note. A trained ear can easily discern that there is a much greater degree of freedom in his voice than that of Sohyang's. 6. 이선희 상록수/사랑으로--In this performance, you can hear her resonate all the way down to G3 (a note Sohyang barely supports), and while she does not mix, you can hear the power and control she displays over belts as high as D5. The amount of chest resonance she is able to release is astounding, and is frankly reminiscent of Western greats Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey. All of her singing is highly diaphragmatic and free of tension here. Now it's important to note that all of these vocalists consistently sing on this level (or even on a higher level). These performances should not be taken as the capstones of their careers, but rather as an insight into the abilities they possess that disqualify anyone from simply stating that Sohyang is the best. The burden of proof is on you to show how Sohyang overcomes any of these fantastic vocalists. I will admit that she has one of the best mixes, but so does Sun Nan, and so does Han Hong (in a sense). Vocalists like 양희은 and 송창식 who come from more classical backgrounds don't need a mix like Sohyang, and neither do vocalists like 이선희, who comes from a more contemporary tradition. Despite this, all of the vocalists I mentioned are able to produce resonance in all of their registers (Sohyang cannot), and all posses greater dynamic control and have a greater sense of pitch. They are also more consistent in their execution of technique (no matter what you think of their vocal approaches). Of course, I respect your opinion as well, and I'm not saying Sohyang isn't good. 음역뿐만은 아니예요. 발성과 폭발력에서도 앞서요. 호흡도 젤 좋아요. 고음으로 갈수록, 진성(힘을 실어서) 소리를 낼수록 호흡이 어렵거든요. 소향 싫어하다가 실제로 들어본 사람들이 "괴물" "사람 아닌 것 같다"고 얘기 많이 해요. 소향은 가창 자체가 음향 통해 유독 왜곡 되는 가수중 한명이예요.
김범수 팬이 2-3년 전 호주 조인트 콘서트(소향-이영현-JK김동욱) 갔었다가 김범수 다음 팬카페에 후기 남겼거든요. 자기는 원래 이영현을 젤 좋아했었대요. 역시나 이영현 좋았대요. 근데 김동욱 목소리 너무 좋더래요. 기대와 달라서 많이 놀랐대요. 그리고 마지막에 소향이 나왔는데 그리 좋아하지 않았었대요. 근데 두 사람보다(?) 소향이 딱 3배 더 잘 부르게 자기는 느꼈다네요. 김범수 다음 팬카페에서 검색하면 나오지 않을까 해요. 한번 보세요.

그러나 박기영, 이영현 등 다른 가수들도 강점들이 많죠. 박기영님은 다양한 장르에 대한 센스가 좋아요. 맛있게 노래를 부르시죠.
