I have been in two collisions, one of which was life changing. While I am old and slow, now, I think your harm reduction no judgement approach to "stunting" is realistic. Your channel is full of win! I put "VIPs" on the back of my sled so I plan on learning how to be safer forever. Room for improvement is the biggest room in the world 👍
i've noticed the more I ride the more cautious I am. even in my car now. when driving or riding I'll see if im in someones blind spot, and sometimes I can kinda sense 'you're gonna merge aren't you' sometimes i see that blindspot light and feel a bit better, but am still cautious. good tips! love your videos!

Hey, man. This was a really nice video! Braking down a bunch of scenarios that are similar but a little different from each is a great way to explore variable situations.
Getting over debris, throttle on then off to lighten the front then rear as you clear the object if you can't go around it.
Tip number two, check your pants. An appropriate tip for the number two.
Leaf man at 6:00 brought back a memory. (I wonder if he didn't use the front brake in that fall) After Halloween beware of smashed pumpkins in the road. After they've been run over a few times they assume the color of pavement. I snagged one with a not so well timed light application of the rear brake. I was slowing to turn right onto my street. Fortunately I hadn't initiated a lean or the turn and just carried on straight after a little butt puckering. Didn't know what it was until I turned around and came back. Worse than wet leaves in the road.

Don't even have to come off the throttle to lighten the rear. A little bit of power will allow the rear wheel to climb over it. The bike should come down more evenly front and back like jumping off a step rather than rocking forward into a stoppie.
@@stormatron6184 that depends upon what I'm crossing, how tall it is and whether or not it's a living being. Chopping thr throttle unloads the rear suspension. Staying on it will have you wheelie over an object. If I don't want to damage a tire I'm letting off the throttle.

YOU WILL LEARN a LOT from Dan's video's. FACT.
What i do on my dirt bike to jump obstacles and even launch myself on speedbumps and the like is to push the bike down with both my hands and my feet just before and the suspension will bounce back and it will be almost weightless when rolling over the obstacle, or gets pushed even harder up by the speedbump to launch and do a high jump.
used to do that with a bycicle and after some practice ended up also doing it with the motornike.
Called; Preloading the Suspension.

On the first video yes, he did indeed lock up the rear tire but the snap correction that almost caused a tank-slapper is because he released the brake while the rear tire was at an angle in comparison to his direction of travel. If he had waited until the rear was straight again it would not have tried to snap correct.
3:50 check it in slo-mo; notice the rear tail light comes on. No road surface hazard; rider panicked, grabbed a fistful of brake, and broke traction.

@ 2:23 this is the most common error any rider will make. Not understanding proper cornering technique. Outside, inside, back outside is the way to corner. Meaning he should have loaded the bike farther inside of the lane. Leaning into the apex and powering the bike out of the corner. Play any racing video game and turn on the proper racing line, it'll show you what im talking about. It works for all vehicles not just motorcycles.
For a space bubble just imagine there's a 15 foot 360 degree invisible wall around you and anytime another vehicle enters that wall you need to react to it. If someone's riding on your ass, increase your speed until they're not, if you're following a vehicle and it's too close, decrease your speed and increase your bubble. Never ride in anyone's blindspot either increase your speed or decrease your speed so they can see you.
New rider here. Second time on a bike I high side on a turn and suffer a grade 5 AC separation. I still want to ride, but I'm having second thoughts due to how easily I sustained a serious injury. I wish I had found your videos way sooner.
if you need to build back confidence, start at a parking lot or something similar near you. getting more familiar and skillful with brakes and handling in a no risk context is awesome and pretty fun too imo. high sides are nasty. I dont blame your hesitation.

Start slow man and gradually work your way up to different ride conditions. Take the MSF course, start riding local neighborhood streets with little traffic at slow speeds (less than 25 mphs). Practice shifting grips, braking, using the clutch, slow speed maneuvers, etc. until you are completely comfortable. Once you are no longer focusing on operating the clutch, brakes, throttle, you might be ready for road riding
The camera shake is clearly him locking up the rear wheel and the back started to go out on him. When he released the brakes, the wheel gained traction again and the bike jerked back straight and had a tiny wobble. I did lock up the rear once in an actual emergency stop, with a car in front of me. If I have done the same as in the video, I would have smashed in the car. What I did is stand up and shifter ALL my weight on the handlebars, I don't remember if I kept braking with the front or not, this all happened instinctively... I just know I used the sideways drift to steer myself to the left, while drifting, and I slowly released the rear brakes to ease the traction back in as to not jerk the bike, and I passed between the car in front of me and the car to it's left, and came to a stop between the two cars in front of them...
This was by far the closest call I ever had... My life flashed before my eyes. I must have gotten distracted and didn't realized the traffic was stopping in front of me...
if you go over something on the road and you cant avoid it try and hit it or go over it head on/ straight so your front wheel doesn't go over it sideways causing you to hit the deck and damage your bike.
I agree with Dan on the space cushion, I do it myself. I have noticed that cars DO NOT respect your space cushion AT ALL.

2:03 If you play it at .25 speed, you will see that his front tire may have dropped into a crack, right as he braked, causing his bars to jerk. This probably messed with his line as he was braking. The rest is just him target locking on the ditch. Remember: The machine tends to head in the direction you are looking, so look at where you want the bike to be.
He never touches the front brake though so he's rear brake only. So we already know he has no clue.

on the first debris in the rode. If you count seconds at the truck, or car pass various "land marks" there is MAYBE 3 seconds max between when the truck passes something and the motorcycle passes. So maybe following too close.

You got it! I just passed mine a couple weeks ago. They go over everything that they test you on, and in my state there are 5 riding tests and a multiple choice 50 question test that is mostly common sense. Biggest thing they look for is looking where you are going and not focusing on the lines, if you can do that follow the instructions, you will pass. If you remember, let us know how you do

The big mistake that new riders make (and I count myself as one, too) is that they assume that they „can ride“ as soon as they are done with motor school and have their license in hand.
No. In motor school you learn the bare basics that help you move the bike and how to not kill yourself doing it. All the real practice that makes you a rider comes after that.
For my small motorcycle license I had exactly one driving lesson of an hour. I had driven around parking lots before on a CBR and a Bandit though and I had driven scooters. After that hour the instructor sent me on my way and said „I don’t know what else to teach you. You know all the basics. What you need is practice. You just need to get on the road.“

Chin Mounts look cool, but they are $35 for a $1 part. And another $35 for an arm to properly mount the camera.
Your space cusion should be ALL around you, especially in the open lane pattern situations! So basically treat the traffic in the lanes next to you as you would in your own lane if they're ahead of you.

I see so many new riders hit the corner too fast, and their brains tell them they can't brake while leaning, so they straighten right up and go off the road as they hit their brakes. I don't think it's target fixation as much as not trusting their tires to hold traction (lack of experience using brakes while cornering).

You give a lot of great info but I feel like the biggest thing I learn from you watching Moto Stars vids ends up being "don't be a goddamn shithead on a bike". You don't need to challenge cars, you don't need to fight for position, you don't need to shout at drivers or lay on your horn when you can easily tickle the brakes and avoid a situation, just be mindful that you're on a small, hard to see, vulnerable vehicle and behave accordingly.

@@douglas8245 exactly! The skid mark and flashing brake lights too, it's very quick but the brake lights flash like 3 times , he most likely panicked.
I hold a class A CDL and had to go through the smith system as a part of my training. In your opinion do you think it should be included as part of the MSF courses to teach people about the vision aspect of riding and looking further up the road most of the time it seems like if the rider had built in more of a stopping distance there would be less issues
They do to some extent; Some people just ride like everything will go their way.
Do you hold a class M1 endorsement too? Last I checked you are supposed to look 10 to 20 seconds ahead eith a bike. Then check your rear view every 3 seconds... am I misremembering or does that sound right?
@@kevinfikes1920 they are not that much most of the small car and motorcycle preferred distance is between 4-7 seconds of following distance but no matter what you are driving the most distance you create the more you can see and predict the road
Had a car pull out infront of me on a 55mpg road. I was withen arms reach of the truck of the car with my 250 dual sport sideways. Somehow it straightened out and i didnt fall or crash. Idek how i did it
Always ride to the just below the limit of what your equipment is rated for, and never ride to the point where your limits are questionable within yourself.
We have encountered people stopped, unloading their truck, in the right hand (our lane) of a two-lane BRIDGE... Def need to keep a hypervigilant, keen eye out for "uncommon situations" aka dum-dums!!😂 And slow down!!!

The first video from what I can tell he tried to swerve/steer around the hazard while applying alot of brakes. When he felt the lock up he let go saving himself and his bike.

They are scared. Especially in curves and turns if you use that front brake, you will fall, plus the front holding 70% of the power, its just a lot more of a force to use and takes a lot more thinking before you use it. That's my guess

Agreed. That's why it's important to slow BEFORE a turn. Trail braking is also a pretty useful skill to develop. Hopefully, the person took some classes and improved his riding.

Well it's difficult to practice and mentally prepare for a huge metal panel to fall right in front of you.
Practicing panic brakes. Find a spot and practice stopping as quick as possible
@@zombanator3000 that I do, but even that is not really possible, because you are already aware that you will have to react and when to react. It's much different when it happens absolutely unexpectedly, and especially that the road obstacle I mentioned is rather rare.

Biggest problem is ..Americans being allowed to ride any Machine without proper adequate training .... and i used the term 'Adequate' ...... The MSF is the most inadequate course that allows you to ride whatever you want ...
It's no better that the CBT we have in the U.K (compulsory basic training).......this only allows you to get on the road with Learner plates ...
Until the U.S takes their vehicular training more seriously , incidents like these will keep happening ... i mean , C'mon ....doing all your Braking with just your rear brake? ....what idiot is teaching this?

So many problems could be avoided if people just bought bikes with ABS, basically just allows you to grab as much front/rear break as much and as fast as you want without any consequences, literally 0 disadvantage to it, if i manage to get over 1G of breaking until the rear wheel came up so can you, i really would wish for if more people started to tell people to get ABS bikes instead of teaching proper breaking technique, its the safer option

Why is it always pickup trucks that have the butthurt drivers? I've been cut off before, pulled out in front of, the works. Most is from ignorant drivers. However, the only driver's I've ever experienced aggression from was from those driving pickup trucks.

Very appropriate. I saw a guy mowing and blowing grass clippings onto a backroad I frequent... literally covering an entire lane. I wasn't on the bike at the time, but I stopped and explained to him why it is so dangerous to do what he's doing. Called me an idiot and told me to FO and mind my own business. The next week when I went by, there he was doing the same thing again. 🤦♂ I'm convinced some people are just born stupid.

In an open lane pattern, remember one thing.
If your bike is quiet, there is no chance they will hear you.

If it's loud they don't hear you either as all the sound is going backwards. They only hear you when you are next to them. Loud Pipes don't save lives. they are made to boost Ego's.

@ordinaryman1904 I actually have a few bikes. Some loud and some quiet. The loud pipes do FA to people in cars other than scaring them as you blast past the drivers window. If you drive a car the stereo blocks out the sound of a bike behind them. The loud pipes won't save your ass. Only you can do that. Without Rev bombi ng and making your loud pipes scream for nothing. And I do know what car drivers do hear as I drive bikes, trucks, and cars.
