I am on an airbase in Iraq with a hair system. I do the shaving and fitting myself its easy now. Even sharing bathrooms you make it work. No one here knows i have a hair system and they will never know. Believe me you can make it work.
You know I'm having a rough time with all this hair stuff cause I started with dutasteride and experienced some sympthoms and had to stop it, and my only hope now is a hair system but I tried it once and stop wearing it and watching your videos and how sincere and honest you are is making me thinking on giving it a chance again, thanks a lot!
The systems that are out there today are very natural in appearance. However, It always amazes me that in the year 2023, we are still using the same antiquated methods of attachment. Why can’t someone invent a way to adapt the “vacuum suction” method of attachment that is out there for “full” wigs and make it available for all systems? So much more liberating, cost and time saving than what is currently out there.
The only reason I'd stop wearing a system is if my natural hair grew back overnight. Once you get yourself acclimated to it, it's smooth sailing, just like any other type of grooming routine. Great video as always!

Doing my own maintenance and re-installs was the only option for me because I was not about to pay $100 every week or two weeks. I also used Curtis's ebook and video training to learn how. The first time I tried to do a re-groom, I seriously about threw my hair out the window because I wasnt getting it lined up right. Then I took a break, took a breath, and was like nope, I got this. I took my time and I got it on perfectly. It was easier and easier each time. Its all about just getting through the learning curve. Good video buddy! The hair looks great!

Can I just say how incredibly important men like you are to other men's self assurance and mental health? Talking about feelings like they're real instead of some thing only women deal with or somehow it's wrong for a man to have feelings or be insecure about his appearance. Its total bullshit. What you have said in this video is about hair systems, but you are also speaking on certain emotions you can relate with and that is incredible to see. More of this needs to become the mainstream. Men helping other men with their insecurities and emotions versus sucking it all up and getting angry.
Good points. I am curious as to how you trim your hair in back and sides when it comes time for you to put your hair back on so it will blend properly. Also, how did you cut your system hair to fit in all over? Did you do it yourself? Crazy. Looks great!
My uncle had one of these. It looked great. He finally got tired of the maintenance, had it removed, shaved his head and now he looks like the guy on”Pawn Stars.” Looks better IMO.
Something you'll realize as you continue to wear hair over the years is that not all pieces are the same. For some reason, some pieces are just easier to apply than others, don't ask me why, I usually buy Factory made pieces and they're usually way too dense and on the rare occasion that I do go to a stylist they usually never thin it out enough so in order for it to look realistic you often need to work with it, like for example I used this leave in conditioner it's not oily but it gives you a shine basically the wet look to help the hair look thinner and as you wear your system over the next 3 to 6 months or whatever it will lose hair on its own, so I often find that a hairpiece six months down the road looks even more realistic than one you just bought because it doesn't have as much hair and doesn't look as perfect and it seems like every stylist is adamant about not thinning it out too much. The last couple times I went to a stylist they did such a bad job that I bought a piece on Amazon unfortunately I forgot to get the knots bleached but I wear bangs so it doesn't matter but anyways I actually used a razor rather than a scissors to cut it in and I'm talking like a really tiny razor that I bought at Sally's not like one of the big ones that a stylist uses and the piece is one of my best ever. you're going to have to not only master the maintenance the install but also styling it because you'll look back in pictures and be like wow I should have worn my hair that way or this way or whatever the case may be so I also advise using your cell phone cam to see how you look because the cell phone cam often brings out the worst features I was not only your hair but your face depending on the lighting. A mirror is not enough because our minds often trick us into believing that it looks good when it often doesn't and so many people are afraid to be honest about whether or not your piece looks realistic or good that it's a judgment you really have to make yourself. like it will often take me 3 hours every time I reapply and style my current system. I I try to set it up so that once I have completed the reapplication of the hair system and styling of it, it will only take me about anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes to style during the week. I usually reserve cleaning and reapplying the hair system on a lazy Sunday. It's not something you'll want to do before work although I have done it but who needs the pressure
For about 20 years now, I just use one strip of tape in the front and one strip of tape in the back. I take the system off every night before bed and replace the two tapes every morning after I shower. I hated the glue, the cleanup and the cost. One system can last about two years. Live and learn.
Thanks, Jake. My bond broke on me 10 days after I first attached it. The videos you and Curtis make has helped prepared me for this situation both mentally and emotionally. On Sunday I attempted to clean my system and replace it with tape. After trial and error, I finally was able to attach my system on myself and it looks great. I feel good that I am able to do it myself. My goal is to become my own expert at it. With your knowledge and guidance I feel I’ll get there sooner than later. Very true man! I remember the first time it did a full reinstall all by myself. It does feel amazing lol! And your right it can 100% be done by yourself, just takes a lot of practice. I have recently been cutting my own hair also. Makes you feel even more independent! I highly recommend it.
Hry Jake great vid, totally know where ur coming from. So glad i stumbled onto ur vids. I learned to completely go tape vs bond/tape and it freed me from regular appts. I'd still go for cut-ins and if system needed dying due to oxidation, but it's saved me a lotta money and time plus I moved home to Hawaii where there's no HC or other outfit but did find a stylist that does reinstall for a dirt cheap price (i just have to come prepped). When hair goes long I go to a specific barber w my baseball cap ie no system, who knows i wear a system, and who trims my hair, not super short but jist a trim then I'm able to install my system myself and it still looks pretty decent and blends well. I'm still a work in progress but still learning, esp wrt maintenance and knowing how to handle my system to make it last longer, etc. But I'm glad I'm free and liberated and empowered to take control. It really came out of necessity. And so I dont worry like i used to just making it a part of my lifestyle. Esp after I went to Bosley earlier this yr to see if i was a candidate for h. transplantation, which they deemed i wasn't. So hallelujah! 🙌😎
Pushing out a re-install makes it much much harder to do. 1-2 weeks is best. As a person who does this it takes more time, and the adhesive is more of a mess to clean up.
This was exactly the thing I was worrying about when getting my hair system, relying on another person for refits when needed. Definitely going to be learning how to do it myself or having my GF do it 🤙

Jake, buy a hand mirror... so you can see the back of your head for shaving. Buy a styrofoam wig head (with clamp) and put the system on that, and then you can use two hands to put the tape on the system. There is a trick to attaching the system in two phases so you can position your system perfectly!!! You can ping me for it... I will send you the method. It takes me 15-20 minutes to do an attachment now,
I don't have a hair system yet but I want to get one.....What if I only want to use tape for my hair system and take it off at night and put it back during the day? Or go a couple of days with it off and then wear it again? I know that this sounds odd but I want to be able to use my system that way....Can that be done?
I also want to do it that way. Kind of what women do with extensions, fake eyelashes, fake nails, make-up, etc. Just use it on special occasions or whenever I feel like. Not for everyday, but rather as an accessory, without hiding it from people either. To have photos on Instagram with hair and others with a shaved head, etc. The only thing stopping me from doing this is that I see that in order to have a hair system, you first need to grow your horseshoe area. I would like to be able to go from the shaved style to wearing the hear system without having to grow my horseshoe area like George Costanza. I would never walk in public like that. So, I don't know what to do.
This is such a good video. I am starting this journey right now and already experiencing the lows. I did one re-install myself and wasn't totally happy, so then I had my partner help me, frankly, I would say I did just as good on my own. My biggest problem was getting the system cleaned, thought I did, but nope. I had a bad install and style, so I haven't yet experienced the total highs! But..... I always thought I looked good with a buzzed/shaved head, and frankly I am fortunate enough that for close to 30 years it was my style, taking the system off, now I realize how much I missed having hair. Hi hair bro's I'm wearing a system now a full year! And it is definitely worth sticking it out We have only one studio in Northern Ireland which offers this service, which is hours away from where I live Jake your videos are so essential for all of us - I have been in lockdown for 3 months now and i posted my units to my stylist and he cut them and i have learned to install them myself - it's so liberating! Sometimes I just wanna get it off my head - shower and climb into bed without it!! Once you master putting it in yourself it's fantastic- personally I hate tape! Makes my head itch - so I do a full bond! I've also moved to a gas permeable poly unit and boy is it comfortable I have also found that my local Turkish barber is brilliant at cutting them in - he was afraid at the beginning but he does a great job at a fraction of the price
Seems like the bond is the biggest limitation of the unit. Maybe gluing some sort of locking device to your scalp that connect to the unit at least on the parameter. Just a thought
E - book is a great idea! Maybe a noob question but if you order a hair system can you Choose for curly hair or so too? I have naturally curly hair. And where do you order your system?
I am actually about to give up on hair systems as I feel happy to have one and the hair BUT here are the issues: 1. I play football (soccer for americans) and it kinda forces me to change it every 7-10 days 2. cleaning - OMG I hate cleaning my hair system from the glue. It sticks there. It won't come out (especially from the lace part), I am using alcohol, I am even letting my hair system in warm water mixed with dish-washing soap to make the glue loose a bit (but my hair systems feels really destroyed after that). It takes overall so much time and you get so dirty doing the cleaning..it's frustrating. 3.money - ok I am wearing a hair systems for 1 year now and the last year, I bought 4 of them. I figured out, that having the mono with lace is the best choice BUT it costs a lot of money to maintain, for the glue and to buy one. 4. hot summer - let's be honest, wearing a hair system during summer means, you sweat a lot --> the hair system will scratch and itch you like hell during that time , not to mention the glue melting down So overall..I am considering hair transplant, which would be much easier
short answer: don't do it long answer: Let me explain. I play football(Soccer) and I still have my hair systems as I am getting the hair transplant this september (had to save some money to visit Turkey etc) I am getting really sweaty so I use 2 things before I install the hair system - Walker No Sweat + Walker Max Hold Sport and tape AND EVEN WITH THIS , THE HAIR SYSTEM GETS LOOSE while you sweat a lot. It is ok, because after I cool down, it get's back to normal. Sometimes I have to reaply at home with some extra glue. No to your situation: When you play boxing, you probably will sweat a lot. So when you get hit into the head , it could simply move. If you are OK with this and you don't care what other people say about you wearing a hair system or don't care if it falls off- go for it. If you wanna keep it a secret - don't do it.

If u use it like a cap its really easy to maintain. Dont glue it permantly & sleep and bath with it. 1) Clean & Apply bond once a week 2) clean hair once a mth. Tats all needs to be done

I know this is an older video, but I agree with you 100 percent. I live in a large city, and shockingly, there are really only two well known stylists that do systems (I call them whigs, and I pronounce the h, because I think it's funny). We're a big tech city, and a lot of my person's clients are like straight tech bros who are absolutely uninterested in learning any sort of cosmetic skill to accompany their whig... So the person does full glue bonds for $800, and then re-installs for $500, and these guys legit spend $500 every 3-5 weeks to have this piece of plastic and hair re-stuck on their head. And they're happy to do it. But I just couldn't. And not due to the money--I could make that work if I really wanted to... But what I wanted was control. I figured, if I was going to make this drastic change that you can't really go back from (other than shaving your head), I needed to be able to solve any possible problem I could encounter. I couldn't imagine being one of those guys with no knowledge of what was stuck to their head, going on vacation, and having something go wrong--and be totally helpless to fix it. THAT would make me depressed and anxious. But now, since I've learned how to manage it myself, it's like total second nature. Nothing panics me at all. Yes, it's a learning curve at first. My first solo reinstall, which was like 10 days after my initial cut-in, was an absolute dumpsterfire. That hairline was SO far back, and the back of it got stuck to my natural hair at the back hairline and took forever to unstick--it was highly unpleasant... But I just had to laugh. I was like, nope, we're going to make this work. And I did. Each reinstall got a little better and a little better. And now I can do the whole thing in 60 minutes, completely on autopilot whilst watching TV. So--if you're on the fence and you choose to go for it, I think it's the best decision you'll ever make, but REALLY commit to it. Don't half ass it or think it will be easy. It won't. Maybe even go into it fully expecting it to be a difficult nightmare, and then you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is!
Hi jake, had my first system for one week, and already thinking about how to do this for myself. The place I had it done is miles away , I’m a complete novice don’t know anything about the glue and how to remove it or anything else, got a lot to learn. I like the system but not sure if it has been fitted right they glued around the edges not all over, the first week I found it could become a bit irritating like itchy, if you bring the e book out that would be great. I quit because the people Around me could never not support my choice. My mother ridiculed me so I reacted badly so I shaved my head and then she wouldn’t be seen in public with me . The second time I tried I had a much nicer system but lacked the confidence to stick with it because of the negative feedback from the first time.

I know about the high , but then there are the limits . Swimming is a challenge while wearing a rug , especially on a date , when you are trying to keep your secret.Also at my job , in a safety department , we were training on how to fire eguipment , we had to put a firefighters mask on over our heads, I told them I could not put it on because I was claustrophobic .But he the high when I first put it on and this was years ago , before bald was okay , I was in my early 20's and the girls were smiling at me again .
Just had my first system ever installed on June 2- going into it I swore Id be able to go maybe 3 1/2 to 4 weeks between reinstalls but 10 days in and now know that I HAVE to learn how to do reinstalls alone. This video is 100% true in everything you say. Im paying $300 a month for a hair club to provide me 4 systems a year + Having to pay $100+ every 10 days is not realistic on top of the stylist not having openings for a month out. Im determined to learn how to do this on my own and only go in every 3 months for a new system install. Your knowledge and product suggestions are so helpful, just need to locate a video step by step from taking off, to cleaning to reinstalling all in one

im glad you can do it, I really don't have to do mine myself, I'm a stylist, and I have two other stylist friends that wear a unit also, so we get together every 3 weeks on Monday evening, and just simply do each others. it works out great, and since we are really good friends, its friend time with each other. For those of you that know someone else that wears a system and you're not sure about doing it yourself, get together with a friend. Jake I'm glad you can do yours yourself! I think its easier when you have tape . Im a Swiss lace full bond guy, so that's just a little different. Cant wait to read your E-Book. Might even be beneficial to me. Hi Jake. I just recently discovered your great videos! I'm 57, and only within the past year has my hair really gotten thin. At the crown, it's nearly bald. So I've been investigating what I should do. After my research, and watching your videos, a transplant is not for me mostly because I can see them a mile away. Would you recommend HAIR CLUB as a good first time experience? Now, here's the deal. I am a long time hairdresser and wig maker on Bway shows, TV, and film, so I know the ends and outs of the whole hair replacement game, except for, as you said, the covert ways they operate. As far as proper placement of a hairpiece, no problem. I know doing it on yourself can be a very different thing. For all my wigs and pieces, I use what is called SUPERLACE for all my foundations, and single knot everything. There is something called FILMLACE that is very very delicate, and never be suitable for everyday wear. I think I might opt for the thin rubber foundation that I've seen. And blending the colors is a problem because I can't see my own head for a proper match. I would much rather have someone else do that. It’s the opposite for me , I had the system fitted , I so disked the hair cut , I felt uncomfortable with the style , I still have the cut and I’ve refitted myself , I’m just waiting on a appointment to have the style changed to much shorter on top , the trouble is Covid ! Today I did my first reinstall all by myself. I thought I'm gonna cry because it took me the most frustrating 2 hours but even towards the end of getting tape on I got so much better closer to edges cleaner showing that it just takes practice. Now fitting it perfectly as it was before was also challenging without a second mirror but fortunately even though I miss a spot a little bit I realized you will really have to mess it up to be visible to others. Now I have to get itching under control we'll see how it goes
To be honest I can't imagine going to somebody to do it all the time since I train a lot I have to do it around every fifth day so it still feels fresh.
I'm so glad you got it down pat on your own. Your dialogues in your videos are so spot on when explaining the mental mindset and sometimes struggles that almost everyone has when first wearing a hair system. A couple of tips for installing is to spray alcohol, or even just water on your scalp, on top of the tape or glue, whichever you're using, immediately prior to setting the base/system down on your scalp. This gives you a few extra seconds to move it around and adjust it before the alcohol or water evaporates. Then however, once it evaporates its going to start to grab more. Also, for myself, I find it easiest to place my non dominant hand using my thumb and index fingers and just barely pinching the system base extreme front centered forehead edge and knowing exactly where I want that point to be placed on my hairline. You can use a removable marker, or just indent on your skin w a comb by pressing down to leave a pushed in temporary indentation on your forehead. Eventually you will memorize exactly where this spot is on your forehead without having to do this step. So after placing the front and center edge down, ever so lightly using my dominant hand while still holding my front area in place, hold the center backside of system and place the very back down in the center of your backside. You should be able to feel it after a few times. This gives you time to push away from the center top of your head and you can start pushing out any wrinkles. Once you've done all of this you can press it all down Wow, I started a novel but decided halfway through that I had to finish it lol. Cheers!

I don't see what's so difficult. I wouldn't consider going to a stylist; I've been cutting my own hair for 20 years because I could never get a so-called stylist to cut my hair the way I wanted it cut
Right away, I set up my basement bathroom with a mirror installed in front and behind. I get better at it every time. It takes me an hour to shave, get the tape on, get the hair in place, and glue the hairline. I use painter's tape to help keep the glue close to the hairline without going past the hairline. I have few tricks that will keep the hairpiece looking good and lasting longer.
I just got my first system from a club, pretty expensive. I like it, looks like my hair as a kid, even the way it parts. But don't like the way the hairline came out . Part of my hairline looks good, nice natural round like hairline if that's a good explanation. But the other half looks unnatural, it's like a straight line going back, leaving like a triangle like bald spot. Totally different hairline when he it was first fitted to install. Can't notice it combed forward, worked all day, ran into a co worker and not even a glance at my hair. I just wish the hairline was "fuller". Don't wanna comb my hair forward all the time.
Hey jake, One tip I could give you if you not did it already is - 3 way mirror. I also had to cut my own hair during quarantine when all the barbershop were closed, and that mirror really helped me.

I'm glad you're away from that money making rip off environment! It probably wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the greed. I'm sure a big part of it is their overhead with huge salaries, personnel, property cost, advertising, etc. But that's not our problem to pay for their costs!

Agree 100% I'm two weeks in and you really need to manage the touch ups and maintenence. Something that comes with the teritory. I'll be doing my first removal, re clean and fittong on my own this week. I've been doing the hair line touchups and it can be a pain but it's something you need to know how to do. Can't be working on another person's scedule when shit is hitting then fan. Been learning more everyday and gives me more freedom knowing I can do it on my own.
My first reinstall took me over 3 hours and nearly brought me to tears with frustration. I much prefer to wear my system daily and take it off at night, reapplying tape every day, or every second day.
@@stevedgrossman I originally wore it like that, but found it to be very irritating having the system on my head for that long. The sides of my system are poly, so it's not much of an issue having to put new tape on everyday. Plus it's a weaker tape which makes for easy removal. It's over a year old now and still in good shape.
Dood, I’m right there with you 100%! When I got my system it was the middle of the rona here in Oklahoma. So I was forced to wait. I was like screw that and thought heck I’m just going to put it on and see how it looks..... I ended up LOVING it..... I like it longer, and when I was able to get a cut in I just had her blend the back a little bit.... I’m still using my original system and love the freedom of doing installs and maintenance myself. My question is, when the time comes to getting a new system installed...are you able to just go to your local barbers, have the system already glued (you do that yourself before you go in) and go get the style you want? Rather than having to go to a salon for complete installation etc
You really did do a good job Jake. I love your attitude and personality so much. I’ve done the head shave myself but lining it up on my own is still a challenge. Like you, I’m determined to eventually do it on my own after I get the cut in. It’s way too hard when it’s so long. Jake do you ever have issues with hair coming through on the lace side?
@@JakeKent a little hair coming thru on the back side occurs when you remove your unit. Its never much, just a few. I've been wearing a unit for 3 years, and that's just a small draw back. Its gonna happen!
Quick question, so how long does the tape actually hold? If u take it off and put it on? 10-14 days? Because I was thinking of doing a front glue bond and the back being tape kinda like what Curtis does. I haven’t had my first system yet I’m still trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can.
The answer is it depends. For some, they’ll get a month plus. I get 10-14 days on front hairline because of how much I sweat. The tape around the sides and back generally is nowhere near pulling up though.
Another excellent vid! My lazy ass goes to a salon, but I can do everything solo. For the perfect install, put a strip of tape in the center of the unit. I only, initially, peel the white tabs off of that part, and use 99% alcohol on the middle of the scalp. I then place the unit on my scalp, and move it around until everything feels perfectly aligned. I then let that piece of tape settle. Now, with everything perfectly positioned, I peel off the white tabs off of the tape on the back of the unit and then push that part down with my finger tips and brush. I then do the same with the front. Perfect every time!
I am on an airbase in Iraq with a hair system. I do the shaving and fitting myself its easy now. Even sharing bathrooms you make it work. No one here knows i have a hair system and they will never know. Believe me you can make it work.

You know I'm having a rough time with all this hair stuff cause I started with dutasteride and experienced some sympthoms and had to stop it, and my only hope now is a hair system but I tried it once and stop wearing it and watching your videos and how sincere and honest you are is making me thinking on giving it a chance again, thanks a lot!

The systems that are out there today are very natural in appearance. However, It always amazes me that in the year 2023, we are still using the same antiquated methods of attachment. Why can’t someone invent a way to adapt the “vacuum suction” method of attachment that is out there for “full” wigs and make it available for all systems? So much more liberating, cost and time saving than what is currently out there.
The only reason I'd stop wearing a system is if my natural hair grew back overnight. Once you get yourself acclimated to it, it's smooth sailing, just like any other type of grooming routine. Great video as always!

Doing my own maintenance and re-installs was the only option for me because I was not about to pay $100 every week or two weeks. I also used Curtis's ebook and video training to learn how. The first time I tried to do a re-groom, I seriously about threw my hair out the window because I wasnt getting it lined up right. Then I took a break, took a breath, and was like nope, I got this. I took my time and I got it on perfectly. It was easier and easier each time.
Its all about just getting through the learning curve.

Can I just say how incredibly important men like you are to other men's self assurance and mental health? Talking about feelings like they're real instead of some thing only women deal with or somehow it's wrong for a man to have feelings or be insecure about his appearance. Its total bullshit. What you have said in this video is about hair systems, but you are also speaking on certain emotions you can relate with and that is incredible to see. More of this needs to become the mainstream. Good points. I am curious as to how you trim your hair in back and sides when it comes time for you to put your hair back on so it will blend properly. Also, how did you cut your system hair to fit in all over? Did you do it yourself? Crazy. Looks great!
My uncle had one of these. It looked great. He finally got tired of the maintenance, had it removed, shaved his head and now he looks like the guy on”Pawn Stars.” Looks better IMO.
Something you'll realize as you continue to wear hair over the years is that not all pieces are the same. For some reason, some pieces are just easier to apply than others, don't ask me why, I usually buy Factory made pieces and they're usually way too dense and on the rare occasion that I do go to a stylist they usually never thin it out enough so in order for it to look realistic you often need to work with it, like for example I used this leave in conditioner it's not oily but it gives you a shine basically the wet look to help the hair look thinner and as you wear your system over the next 3 to 6 months or whatever it will lose hair on its own, so I often find that a hairpiece six months down the road looks even more realistic than one you just bought because it doesn't have as much hair and doesn't look as perfect and it seems like every stylist is adamant about not thinning it out too much. The last couple times I went to a stylist they did such a bad job that I bought a piece on Amazon unfortunately I forgot to get the knots bleached but I wear bangs so it doesn't matter but anyways I actually used a razor rather than a scissors to cut it in and I'm talking like a really tiny razor that I bought at Sally's not like one of the big ones that a stylist uses and the piece is one of my best ever. you're going to have to not only master the maintenance the install but also styling it because you'll look back in pictures and be like wow I should have worn my hair that way or this way or whatever the case may be so I also advise using your cell phone cam to see how you look because the cell phone cam often brings out the worst features I was not only your hair but your face depending on the lighting. A mirror is not enough because our minds often trick us into believing that it looks good when it often doesn't and so many people are afraid to be honest about whether or not your piece looks realistic or good that it's a judgment you really have to make yourself. like it will often take me 3 hours every time I reapply and style my current system. I I try to set it up so that once I have completed the reapplication of the hair system and styling of it, it will only take me about anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes to style during the week. I usually reserve cleaning and reapplying the hair system on a lazy Sunday. It's not something you'll want to do before work although I have done it but who needs the pressure

For about 20 years now, I just use one strip of tape in the front and one strip of tape in the back. I take the system off every night before bed and replace the two tapes every morning after I shower. I hated the glue, the cleanup and the cost. One system can last about two years. Live and learn.

Thanks, Jake. My bond broke on me 10 days after I first attached it. The videos you and Curtis make has helped prepared me for this situation both mentally and emotionally. On Sunday I attempted to clean my system and replace it with tape. After trial and error, I finally was able to attach my system on myself and it looks great. I feel good that I am able to do it myself. My goal is to become my own expert at it. With your knowledge and guidance I feel I’ll get there sooner than later. Hry Jake great vid, totally know where ur coming from. So glad i stumbled onto ur vids. I learned to completely go tape vs bond/tape and it freed me from regular appts. I'd still go for cut-ins and if system needed dying due to oxidation, but it's saved me a lotta money and time plus I moved home to Hawaii where there's no HC or other outfit but did find a stylist that does reinstall for a dirt cheap price (i just have to come prepped). When hair goes long I go to a specific barber w my baseball cap ie no system, who knows i wear a system, and who trims my hair, not super short but jist a trim then I'm able to install my system myself and it still looks pretty decent and blends well. I'm still a work in progress but still learning, esp wrt maintenance and knowing how to handle my system to make it last longer, etc. But I'm glad I'm free and liberated and empowered to take control. It really came out of necessity. And so I dont worry like i used to just making it a part of my lifestyle. Esp after I went to Bosley earlier this yr to see if i was a candidate for h. transplantation, which they deemed i wasn't. So hallelujah! 🙌😎
Pushing out a re-install makes it much much harder to do. 1-2 weeks is best. As a person who does this it takes more time, and the adhesive is more of a mess to clean up.

Jake, buy a hand mirror... so you can see the back of your head for shaving.
Buy a styrofoam wig head (with clamp) and put the system on that, and then you can use two hands to put the tape on the system.
There is a trick to attaching the system in two phases so you can position your system perfectly!!! You can ping me for it... I will send you the method.

I don't have a hair system yet but I want to get one.....What if I only want to use tape for my hair system and take it off at night and put it back during the day? Or go a couple of days with it off and then wear it again? I know that this sounds odd but I want to be able to use my system that way....Can that be done?
I also want to do it that way. Kind of what women do with extensions, fake eyelashes, fake nails, make-up, etc. Just use it on special occasions or whenever I feel like. Not for everyday, but rather as an accessory, without hiding it from people either. To have photos on Instagram with hair and others with a shaved head, etc.
The only thing stopping me from doing this is that I see that in order to have a hair system, you first need to grow your horseshoe area. I would like to be able to go from the shaved style to wearing the hear system without having to grow my horseshoe area like George Costanza. I would never walk in public like that.

This is such a good video. I am starting this journey right now and already experiencing the lows. I did one re-install myself and wasn't totally happy, so then I had my partner help me, frankly, I would say I did just as good on my own. My biggest problem was getting the system cleaned, thought I did, but nope. I had a bad install and style, so I haven't yet experienced the total highs! But..... I always thought I looked good with a buzzed/shaved head, and frankly I am fortunate enough that for close to 30 years it was my style, taking the system off, now I realize how much I missed having hair. So I guess that is the first step to the highs! Thanks for the videos and also for responding to my email. I never expected that.

Jake your videos are so essential for all of us - I have been in lockdown for 3 months now and i posted my units to my stylist and he cut them and i have learned to install them myself - it's so liberating! Sometimes I just wanna get it off my head - shower and climb into bed without it!! Once you master putting it in yourself it's fantastic- personally I hate tape! Makes my head itch - so I do a full bond! I've also moved to a gas permeable poly unit and boy is it comfortable
I have also found that my local Turkish barber is brilliant at cutting them in - he was afraid at the beginning but he does a great job at a fraction of the price

Seems like the bond is the biggest limitation of the unit. Maybe gluing some sort of locking device to your scalp that connect to the unit at least on the parameter. Just a thought

I am actually about to give up on hair systems as I feel happy to have one and the hair BUT here are the issues:
1. I play football (soccer for americans) and it kinda forces me to change it every 7-10 days
2. cleaning - OMG I hate cleaning my hair system from the glue. It sticks there. It won't come out (especially from the lace part), I am using alcohol, I am even letting my hair system in warm water mixed with dish-washing soap to make the glue loose a bit (but my hair systems feels really destroyed after that).
It takes overall so much time and you get so dirty doing the cleaning..it's frustrating.
3.money - ok I am wearing a hair systems for 1 year now and the last year, I bought 4 of them.
I figured out, that having the mono with lace is the best choice BUT it costs a lot of money to maintain, for the glue and to buy one.
4. hot summer - let's be honest, wearing a hair system during summer means, you sweat a lot --> the hair system will scratch and itch you like hell during that time , not to mention the glue melting down

I am getting really sweaty so I use 2 things before I install the hair system - Walker No Sweat + Walker Max Hold Sport and tape AND EVEN WITH THIS , THE HAIR SYSTEM GETS LOOSE while you sweat a lot.
It is ok, because after I cool down, it get's back to normal. Sometimes I have to reaply at home with some extra glue.
No to your situation: When you play boxing, you probably will sweat a lot. So when you get hit into the head , it could simply move.
If you are OK with this and you don't care what other people say about you wearing a hair system or don't care if it falls off- go for it.
If you wanna keep it a secret - don't do it.

I know this is an older video, but I agree with you 100 percent. I live in a large city, and shockingly, there are really only two well known stylists that do systems (I call them whigs, and I pronounce the h, because I think it's funny). We're a big tech city, and a lot of my person's clients are like straight tech bros who are absolutely uninterested in learning any sort of cosmetic skill to accompany their whig... So the person does full glue bonds for $800, and then re-installs for $500, and these guys legit spend $500 every 3-5 weeks to have this piece of plastic and hair re-stuck on their head. And they're happy to do it. But I just couldn't. And not due to the money--I could make that work if I really wanted to... But what I wanted was control. I figured, if I was going to make this drastic change that you can't really go back from (other than shaving your head), I needed to be able to solve any possible problem I could encounter. I couldn't imagine being one of those guys with no knowledge of what was stuck to their head, going on vacation, and having something go wrong--and be totally helpless to fix it. THAT would make me depressed and anxious. But now, since I've learned how to manage it myself, it's like total second nature. Nothing panics me at all.
Yes, it's a learning curve at first. My first solo reinstall, which was like 10 days after my initial cut-in, was an absolute dumpsterfire. That hairline was SO far back, and the back of it got stuck to my natural hair at the back hairline and took forever to unstick--it was highly unpleasant... But I just had to laugh. I was like, nope, we're going to make this work. And I did. Each reinstall got a little better and a little better. And now I can do the whole thing in 60 minutes, completely on autopilot whilst watching TV.
So--if you're on the fence and you choose to go for it, I think it's the best decision you'll ever make, but REALLY commit to it. Don't half ass it or think it will be easy. It won't. Maybe even go into it fully expecting it to be a difficult nightmare, and then you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is!
Hi jake, had my first system for one week, and already thinking about how to do this for myself. The place I had it done is miles away , I’m a complete novice don’t know anything about the glue and how to remove it or anything else, got a lot to learn. I like the system but not sure if it has been fitted right they glued around the edges not all over, the first week I found it could become a bit irritating like itchy, if you bring the e book out that would be great. I quit because the people Around me could never not support my choice. My mother ridiculed me so I reacted badly so I shaved my head and then she wouldn’t be seen in public with me . The second time I tried I had a much nicer system but lacked the confidence to stick with it because of the negative feedback from the first time.

I know about the high , but then there are the limits . Swimming is a challenge while wearing a rug , especially on a date , when you are trying to keep your secret.Also at my job , in a safety department , we were training on how to fire eguipment , we had to put a firefighters mask on over our heads, I told them I could not put it on because I was claustrophobic .But he the high when I first put it on and this was years ago , before bald was okay , I was in my early 20's and the girls were smiling at me again .
where did you buy your hair system. I went to a couple of companies and they will not sale to the general public.
Just had my first system ever installed on June 2- going into it I swore Id be able to go maybe 3 1/2 to 4 weeks between reinstalls but 10 days in and now know that I HAVE to learn how to do reinstalls alone. This video is 100% true in everything you say. Im paying $300 a month for a hair club to provide me 4 systems a year + Having to pay $100+ every 10 days is not realistic on top of the stylist not having openings for a month out. Im determined to learn how to do this on my own and only go in every 3 months for a new system install. Your knowledge and product suggestions are so helpful, just need to locate a video step by step from taking off, to cleaning to reinstalling all in one

im glad you can do it, I really don't have to do mine myself, I'm a stylist, and I have two other stylist friends that wear a unit also, so we get together every 3 weeks on Monday evening, and just simply do each others. it works out great, and since we are really good friends, its friend time with each other. For those of you that know someone else that wears a system and you're not sure about doing it yourself, get together with a friend. Jake I'm glad you can do yours yourself! I think its easier when you have tape . Im a Swiss lace full bond guy, so that's just a little different. Cant wait to read your E-Book. Might even be beneficial to me. Hi Jake. I just recently discovered your great videos! I'm 57, and only within the past year has my hair really gotten thin. At the crown, it's nearly bald. So I've been investigating what I should do. After my research, and watching your videos, a transplant is not for me mostly because I can see them a mile away. Would you recommend HAIR CLUB as a good first time experience? Now, here's the deal. I am a long time hairdresser and wig maker on Bway shows, TV, and film, so I know the ends and outs of the whole hair replacement game, except for, as you said, the covert ways they operate. As far as proper placement of a hairpiece, no problem. I know doing it on yourself can be a very different thing. For all my wigs and pieces, I use what is called SUPERLACE for all my foundations, and single knot everything. There is something called FILMLACE that is very very delicate, and never be suitable for everyday wear. I think I might opt for the thin rubber foundation that I've seen. And blending the colors is a problem because I can't see my own head for a proper match. I would much rather have someone else do that. Also, I only like to wear my hair in a very short faded on the sides and back style. What are your thoughts? Wwescagle@aol,com

It’s the opposite for me , I had the system fitted , I so disked the hair cut , I felt uncomfortable with the style , I still have the cut and I’ve refitted myself , I’m just waiting on a appointment to have the style changed to much shorter on top , the trouble is Covid ! Today I did my first reinstall all by myself. I thought I'm gonna cry because it took me the most frustrating 2 hours but even towards the end of getting tape on I got so much better closer to edges cleaner showing that it just takes practice. Now fitting it perfectly as it was before was also challenging without a second mirror but fortunately even though I miss a spot a little bit I realized you will really have to mess it up to be visible to others. Now I have to get itching under control we'll see how it goes
To be honest I can't imagine going to somebody to do it all the time since I train a lot I have to do it around every fifth day so it still feels fresh.
I guess I better get a girlfriend the one I want isn't real

I'm so glad you got it down pat on your own. Your dialogues in your videos are so spot on when explaining the mental mindset and sometimes struggles that almost everyone has when first wearing a hair system. A couple of tips for installing is to spray alcohol, or even just water on your scalp, on top of the tape or glue, whichever you're using, immediately prior to setting the base/system down on your scalp. This gives you a few extra seconds to move it around and adjust it before the alcohol or water evaporates. Then however, once it evaporates its going to start to grab more. Also, for myself, I find it easiest to place my non dominant hand using my thumb and index fingers and just barely pinching the system base extreme front centered forehead edge and knowing exactly where I want that point to be placed on my hairline. You can use a removable marker, or just indent on your skin w a comb by pressing down to leave a pushed in temporary indentation on your forehead. Eventually you will memorize exactly where this spot is on your forehead without having to do this step. So after placing the front and center edge down, ever so lightly using my dominant hand while still holding my front area in place, hold the center backside of system and place the very back down in the center of your backside. You should be able to feel it after a few times. This gives you time to push away from the center top of your head and you can start pushing out any wrinkles. Once you've done all of this you can press it all down

Right away, I set up my basement bathroom with a mirror installed in front and behind. I get better at it every time. It takes me an hour to shave, get the tape on, get the hair in place, and glue the hairline. I use painter's tape to help keep the glue close to the hairline without going past the hairline.
I have few tricks that will keep the hairpiece looking good and lasting longer.

I just got my first system from a club, pretty expensive. I like it, looks like my hair as a kid, even the way it parts. But don't like the way the hairline came out . Part of my hairline looks good, nice natural round like hairline if that's a good explanation. But the other half looks unnatural, it's like a straight line going back, leaving like a triangle like bald spot. Totally different hairline when he it was first fitted to install. Can't notice it combed forward, worked all day, ran into a co worker and not even a glance at my hair. I just wish the hairline was "fuller". Don't wanna comb my hair forward all the time.

One tip I could give you if you not did it already is - 3 way mirror.
I also had to cut my own hair during quarantine when all the barbershop were closed, and that mirror really helped me.

I'm glad you're away from that money making rip off environment! It probably wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the greed. I'm sure a big part of it is their overhead with huge salaries, personnel, property cost, advertising, etc. But that's not our problem to pay for their costs!

I have 2 spare units in my closet.
Agree 100% I'm two weeks in and you really need to manage the touch ups and maintenence. Something that comes with the teritory. I'll be doing my first removal, re clean and fittong on my own this week. I've been doing the hair line touchups and it can be a pain but it's something you need to know how to do. Can't be working on another person's scedule when shit is hitting then fan. Been learning more everyday and gives me more freedom knowing I can do it on my own.

No, it just starts to loosen a bit in the front. It's unnerving the first time it happens to you but it's really an easy fix.

My first reinstall took me over 3 hours and nearly brought me to tears with frustration. I much prefer to wear my system daily and take it off at night, reapplying tape every day, or every second day.
I don't see the logic in this. Each time you remove the tape, it's more wear and tear on the system. You are better off leaving it on 1-2 weeks.
@@stevedgrossman I originally wore it like that, but found it to be very irritating having the system on my head for that long. The sides of my system are poly, so it's not much of an issue having to put new tape on everyday. Plus it's a weaker tape which makes for easy removal. It's over a year old now and still in good shape.
@Dark Dream I would definitely consider trying a full lace unit in the future.

Dood, I’m right there with you 100%! When I got my system it was the middle of the rona here in Oklahoma. So I was forced to wait. I was like screw that and thought heck I’m just going to put it on and see how it looks..... I ended up LOVING it..... I like it longer, and when I was able to get a cut in I just had her blend the back a little bit.... I’m still using my original system and love the freedom of doing installs and maintenance myself. I shot some footage of the tape trick by the way! Thank you for the videos!

My question is, when the time comes to getting a new system installed...are you able to just go to your local barbers, have the system already glued (you do that yourself before you go in) and go get the style you want?

Yes, you can. What I’d do, is actually ask one of my barber friends, who is comfortable with a razor.

Hey bud! When I’ve taken it system off, I’ve seen a few come through. But not issue really in my opinion.
@@JakeKent a little hair coming thru on the back side occurs when you remove your unit. Its never much, just a few. I've been wearing a unit for 3 years, and that's just a small draw back. Its gonna happen!
Quick question, so how long does the tape actually hold? If u take it off and put it on? 10-14 days? Because I was thinking of doing a front glue bond and the back being tape kinda like what Curtis does. I haven’t had my first system yet I’m still trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can.
The answer is it depends. For some, they’ll get a month plus. I get 10-14 days on front hairline because of how much I sweat. The tape around the sides and back generally is nowhere near pulling up though.

Another excellent vid! My lazy ass goes to a salon, but I can do everything solo. For the perfect install, put a strip of tape in the center of the unit. I only, initially, peel the white tabs off of that part, and use 99% alcohol on the middle of the scalp. I then place the unit on my scalp, and move it around until everything feels perfectly aligned. I then let that piece of tape settle. Now, with everything perfectly positioned, I peel off the white tabs off of the tape on the back of the unit and then push that part down with my finger tips and brush. I then do the same with the front. Perfect every time!
