    In today’s episode, we show you how to fix dark shadows in photoshop.
    Working with Dark Areas
    It can be extremely annoying to deal with dark areas of an image. Using Curves isn’t always the best option because the highlights of the image tend to get blown out as well. We ran into this same problem when trying to use Levels to brighten up dark areas. So with two of our most commonly used techniques rendered useless, we had to find another method that would brighten up the shadows without blowing out the highlights.
    Shadows/Highlights
    Our best option is the Shadows/Highlights options. This allows us to only effect the shadows or only adjust our highlights. This is an extremely powerful tool because of the precision is gives us when working on an image. There is even a way to bring the color back into our image which really helps tie it all together.

    I know nothing about photoshop. Sometimes I just need help adjusting a photo so I can paint it. I never know what I’m doing. I generally find TH-cam videos to be to quick and never explain anything. THANK YOU. I’m in a zoom meeting with my class, and trying to figure out how to edit this photo (per my teachers suggestion) so I can paint it for my in class assignment. I’ve watched some videos before this and literally almost gave up. I’m happy I didn’t or I wouldn’t have discovered your channel. Subscribed and happy about it!!! Thank you for a simple quick fix, and I am now get to painting so I won’t fall behind. I paint slow enough as it is.

    Although I was aware of the feature, I enjoyed Aaron's smooth approach. The same tool is available in Lightroom as well, though with a limited options. I use it quite a lot - having a 14 bit .NEF RAW file really gives you a lot of details in the shadows, especially when you underexpose the image intentionally to get faster shutter speed, for example.
    Thanks again and keep those great videos coming.

    I like mixing this feature with some basic masking to remove that outer glow, as well as some low opacity and very soft strokes to certain areas of the photos that need them; such as a highlight that gets washed out or some type of circumstance similar to that. Overall, fantastic video!

    Hey Aaron - Is there a way to blend several landscape images together - same scene, but from many different times of day, and (importantly) blending the sky together so it isn't a hard transition? So the blend from an afternoon to evening to sunset sky has a smooth transition and not a hard or jarring transition of the different colours? Thanks!

    Good lesson, however, I am curious: Once a Shadows and Highlight adjustment is made, is that same tool still able to be edited after you make an adjustment? I seem to not be able to recall the tool and have it return showing my adjustments and therefore, my adjustments seem destructive to THAT layer. Is there any way to call up and change those edit without staring over?

    Any advice on correcting B&W images that end up with super black/dense areas in print, but look fine on the screen? This typically happens when I dodge and burn into selected areas of the photo by hand. I found that by not doing too much in one area helps or to do the majority of the adjustment to the overall photo, but this isn't always the best result. I check the image by sliding the middle LEVELS pointer to lighten everything to see what is too dark (then I put it back). Just wondering if there's a better way to do this. Again, this is a print issue. Thanks!

    Aaron just curious but could you adjust your shadows up then use blend if to blend the highlights back to where they were or bring up shadows then mask out the highlights to the original?

    Hi Phlearnies,
    one question bothers me for quite a time now: How do I remove that tiny little hair on a (girls) forearm (in a photograph)? I heard about some duplicating the layer method (but I’m sure there’s a more Aronesc way to do it)…
    And the other thing is a little tip: every time I start to edit an image, I copy the basic layer and leave it invisible on top of all the other layers, so I can in an instant swap between before and after, without having to click alt/opt and selecting all the relevant layers anew when going back to editing.
    But most of all: thanks for all your valuable and entertaining tutorials, they helped me a lot and brightened more than one day ;-)
    Cheers
    Michael

      @jeffrydemeyer5433 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tomas Ramoska Yes, that is what I would like to know too.
      I just bring up ACR when I need to tweak shadows and highlights

    • @EminoMeneko
      @EminoMeneko 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tomas Ramoska I don't think it is better. Just with curves you can edit several points to achieve the results you want. To me it is just about promoting these options. Editing RAW is always better because you just edit functions which are saved in an XMP file or in a database. Anytime you need to show your file the data source is read. Basically it is non destructive. As soon as you get into image editing you start to be in a destructive kind of processing. Pixels are coded in the file and that's.
      But well RAW dev has its limits too so to make it short the best way is to do as much as possible in developping the RAW and fixing it in image edition software.

    • @corckie555
      @corckie555 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tomas Ramoska You are totally right, even Adobe recommends using ACR in their YT channel. They consider 'shadows/highlights' feature in PS itself as 'legacy'.

    I'm not sure if this is a stupid question, but I always felt more than a little confused with the distinction between the concepts of luminance, luminosity and lightness, and how that applies to photo editing and color grading. I looked it up online, but the information is scattered and you can't find it all together in one place. I got even more confused when I tried to think of that in combination with the different blend modes. Any valuable inputs on that? I really don't know who else to ask.
