    I love how Ralph in the beginning felt intimidated because he thought he didn’t bring anything to the table. He felt as if he was standing next to a giant in terms of knowledge and comedy wisdom, but during this whole segment he opens up about something he really loves and doesn’t realize that he is teaching Joe about things he’s passionate about.

I’m a painter’s assistant at a body shop and everything he said from the mundane prep work, the fear of contamination, all the way to the variety of people you meet is so true. Really enjoyed this guy story. And he’s exactly right about paint contamination.
    Years ago my company’s assembly-line equipment was being blamed for paint issues at a Big-3 plant in Detroit. We spent weeks chasing the problem.
    Turned out one of their night shift maintenance guys had a work boot repaired with silicone. Just the tiny bit that boot off-gassed each night was enough to contaminate the area and ruin paint jobs for hours.

    Yep i was priming and sanding my scooter parts listening to this, 5 months in a customs shop taught me so much, all waxy products were kept in a totally different building in a locked cupboard

    • @philyamascunt7518
      @philyamascunt7518 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @timforbes6523
      We weren't allowed to have the clear coat products and waxy/good looking products in the same building either and I worked at a chemical plant in Massillon Ohio that made a lot of well known products for the auto body business and made the different types, but still the same JB Weld and the reason why is because of the dreaded "Fish Eye" that would screw up a ton of prep and paint work due to those little waxy particles in the paint/clear coat that would leave what looked like a dished out and round "Fish Eye" in the finish, the circles at first reminded me of a peacock feather looking circle/shape into the finish and it WAS BAD!
      We had our own, separate building/body shop at this plant and I loved being in the body shop and tried to transfer there because there was a guru/expert of a body shop/painter of a guy that was the only worker in the body shop to test all of the new products on actual cars and test batches of old products.
      This expert told me and the bosses that he would teach me everything he knows if I transferred to the body shop but the big wigs/bosses denied my transfer because I was one of the four "Industrial Maintenance" guys in the entire plant and they needed every guy that knew anything about real maintenance working in the main plant but I did get to help the guru in the body shop on occasion and I LOVED IT! Alas my body shop love would never be answered and I quit that place within 6 months after my transfer denial due to a lot of other bullshit... We made "All Metal" that was expensive as hell but it was putty/bondo with actual metal/titanium in it and when you put a sander or grinder to the All Metal after proper curing time that stuff would throw sparks.
      We also made a finish coating called "White Ice" that was impossible to keep up with the demand from body shops and suppliers. This plant had so many high paid "Deep Thinkers" in the shot calling process that this place would not keep spare parts for any machine line/operation/product line in the entire plant and if something broke or "Went Out" after the bosses left at 3 PM we would write the parts needed on a piece of paper and put the "Parts Needed" paper on each of the 5 bosses desks in the bigger, office that was actually built on the production floor.
      The next morning these bosses would see the list of parts/supplies needed and get into a 3 hour argument on which one or two bosses would have to actually get off their ass and makes a parts run
      One day at about 3:30 PM the production line for the "White Ice" shut down completely. I was new and only there for a week and went to get the line running again. The only apparent problem keeping the White Ice line running and producing was there entire line was dead, there was no "Juice" as in electricity on the line at all
      I went to the main control room, located the breaker to the problem and noticed immediately that the old and ancient breakers were shot, melted and rattled like a baby top when I removed it and went to get a new breaker
      I finally found another maintenance guy on the other end of the plant "Smhoozing" with every and all female employee which was about 90% of the employees and quite a few women.
      I told him the problem and asked him where the stock room/new parts room was located and he laughed in my face and explained the "No parts/supplies" system that this plant ran to keep money in their account instead of keeping money on the shelves
      I went in and wrote the parts needed on the list. There was a REAL bootlicker that found out what was going on and called one of the bosses while the boss was golfing, this bootlicker boss came in and huddled up with the ass kissing employee that called the boss.
      This golfing boss was weird and came up to me wearing old fashioned, traditional Scottish golfing attire, well thank God he didn't wear a kilt but his attire made me laugh and that pissed this weird boss off just a tad
      I explained the parts problem and asked why his boot licking phone caller didn't explain the problem to him over the phone to save the boss a trip? The boss said the problem WAS explained to him but even though there was nothing the boss could do that evening he wanted to make an appearance at the plant to look good for the higher ups
      Next morning I walked into the production line office to make sure that someone was getting the new breakers and what I walked into was the extremely assholish plant manager reaming the 5 foreman's asses out because the "White Ice" line is the plants biggest money making product and screaming "WHY WAS THE WHITE ICE LINE DOWN FOR 17 hours and counting?"
      That's when the plant manager turned to me and asked ME that same question with all 5 bosses turning their heads, crossing their arms and pushing the blame on me! So I let all 6 of these guys know that this was the ONLY place that I ever worked that didn't have extra/spare parts for anything in the plant let alone the necessities to keep producing their biggest money making products coming off the production lines.
      That didn't go over well with them and I didn't care since I was also a machinist and industrial maintenance man and could get a job anywhere within a week's time which is what ended u happening in due time after I got tired of their shit and they got tired of my shit.
      I was flabbergasted shortly after I started working at this chemical plant early on in my start at this plant when the JB Weld scam/business practice slapped me in the face. Something as small as the JB Weld ordeal really opened my eyes to a lot of the BS pulled by big corporations/medium sized businesses though.
      I retired a few years ago and spend my time fishing for musky, hunting coyotes and crows or working part time in a rural Ohio country store/drive - thru combo business but am currently off from working the store due to cancer that I was diagnosed with in April 2023

I remember I was painting a car one day and the paint kept reacting, I went to lunch and thinking about it I realized the detailer was working on a car outside the my area. When I got back from lunch I asked him if he was using armor all and sure enough he had been spraying the tire shine shit that was being drawn into the booth and messing up my work! @@gregbrown1091 I have hte added bonus of being hyper sensitizes to isocyanate. If it even touches my skin I can't breathe for months. I reused my mask the next day after shooting clear and it jacked me up bad in 2012. Now I look like a Dr trying to find the cure for zombies when I paint and I still get my lungs wrecked for a month or so. So if there is anything that is going to screw up the paint, I am very displeased because it is not only a hassle and expense to repaint it, it makes me unable to work for weeks at a time as well.
      Someone brought a can of WD40 to my shop, I don't use the stuff. Then they punctured the can and it sprayed all over the ceiling. I think I will build a new shed just to paint stuff... I can make it a downdraft using the drain in the floor, and maybe I won't get sick.
      Will have to be after the 72 Cutlass I am doing right now though, I need that thing out of my shop. Its getting a HOK candy purple that looks like Grand National paint until the light hits it, then the silver or gold undercoat flashes through it showing the purple. I need to practice on something, so my 76 C10 is getting the low buck home made version, but without the purple. I am not allowed to use two color names on here, one is the GN shade and the other was on TransAms 69-72 that was not blue.

I can relate with him on this I worked at a paint and body shop for 5 years . Sanding and prepping cars and buffing I would do . He ain’t lying before painting the vehicle surfaces had to be super clean before spraying. Any oils or even a finger touch could create ( fisheye) . Dust or particles floating in the air would land on the clear coat. You have to wet sand and buff. I’m 32 to now I worked there 15 to 22 years old. To this day I have my side business. I buff and polish all vehicles. 250 to 350 bucks is what I charge and headlight restoration. Still love doing it till this day. I salute ya Ralph keep pushing homie puro para arriba compa!!!
