thanks for watching! i'll be choosing a Patron whose portfolio I'll review in the next video! what's the part you struggle most with when putting together your portfolios?
Thank you for this. For years I couldn't wrap my head around what to do and how to do it. I'm 42 years young and still hoping to get something done within the industry. The rest will be a breeze (they need to show this type of stuff in art school, at least where I went 20 years ago).
Thank you so much for posting this! I’m applying for a character design internship and I have so much anxiety because I’m not sure what they might be looking for (if they want something that fits more of their style or if they want to see something unique) but this has helped a ton!
I love Brittany Myers! She’s one of my biggest inspirations im so glad u including her and I love that you know each other ❤❤ you are both such great artists!!
thank you so much for the video, it's showed to me when i REALLY, REEEEEEEEALLY NEED to know this things. I'll build my portfolio based in your tips. thank you!
This video was amazing!! I love the content you put out. Im currently putting together a portfolio to apply to college and this definitely helped with that too!
I LOVE your videos! Thanks for this one!! I'm trying to make a new portfolio for a position I'd love to get, so I'm trying to make sure it's reallllly on point! A video like the one you've made here gives me a lot of confidence, thank you so much! 🥰
I just discovered you on tiktok and i'm lowkey obsessed with the type of content you make there, so I guess I'm just really interested in your experience/journey priorto joining the animation industry as well as your current experiences as a character designer/director. So, basically, keep up the "interview with yourself" type content, it's working out great!
This is really helpful but as for fanart like I have had so many mixed reviews for fanart. I have had college professors tell me to include fanart because it's still art. While my highschool art teachers have told me not to include fanart. I think it all really depends.
if it's most of your portfolio, for juniors that's okay. studios also will usually state on their website if they allow/encourage it when submitting your portfolio. just be attentive to what your employers are looking for! your portfolio will tend to be curated for the position you're applying to. tldr; yep it does depend! just look at what employers want and allow :>
Hi Jackie, thank you for the video, this is extremely helpful! I was wondering if there’s a chance that you could do one video about visual development portfolio tips with examples, too? I am struggling with what to put in my visdev portfolio and how to make it more successful. Thank you so much!
all of this is valuable information but as a newcomer who studied multimedia design (from print design to video to sound design etc.) and artist in my freetime it‘s hard for me to narrow down what I want to focus on my portfolio…
I'm so happy you're putting out so much content on tiktok & I hope you post more youtube videos!! I can't wait for the next one (and I really hope you go through with that hour long character design vid omg) your content is super helpful to me as a high schooler who wants to enter the industry in a few years! I hope you're doing well!
Hello! Is it ok to have multiple tabs on your portfolio if you want to apply for multiple things while getting in the industry? Like a character design one, storyboard, concept art and 2D animation?
What about when you’re working two different things? For example, someone is a character designer but they’re also an illustrator. Do they have separate portfolios or do they combine it in one big portfolio?
a lot of artists i’ve seen have created separate pages in the same website (for ex you can make multiple pages on wix) and just label them “illustrations”, “character designs”, “personal work” etc!
Omg this is the exact explenation that i need. But i have a question. Let's say there's 3 characters. Do i have to make turnarounds, expression and poses for each of them? Or can i just make the expression for character number 1 and turnaround for character number 2 etc.
I’m in a dilemma atm with my name. I have had my artist name for a while now.. would it be better to have your actual real name as your website or your artist name ? Does it matter?
A little late to this comment! But I’d just use your real name. It’s what the company you’re applying to will refer to you as anyway. I had the same issue for a while until I I just settled on my real name haha, it’s easier and avoids confusion.
Hey Jackie! My goal is to work for a specific animation studio in the future and I am wondering if I should include character designs in the studios style in my portfolio? Could I create an original character project in the studios style/universe? ^.^
hi! absolutely, if you're applying to a studio that does preschool TV, include that type of style and fewer pieces that show realistic video game concept style for example. but be careful, you want this piece to be versatile enough to show it to other studios and not have it look like you're just 'lifting' a studio's style. good luck!
Hi. I am a versatile artist having skills in character design, backgrounds and graphics. The problem for me is how a versatile artist's portfolio should be, who is willing to get hired for any job?
I've been loving your videos and been learning a lot on getting into the industry, the do's and the tips. But I'm curious, is can I work for studios/companies under an alias? Obviously when a legal document is required or asked for that needs my legal name, I will be happy to provide it but is it possible to mainly use an alias such as in your resume, credits, portfolio, whatever name-required basis? Because I am planning on having two careers. one is an art-focused career in which I figured I should use an alias for when working for studios/companies as a freelancer and/or full time, while the other is more non-art, more "physical" career where I may use my legal name more
I like this video but had to turn it off around the 14 min mark because that awful screeching sound the background. Thought I should share incase I'm not the only one
Can someonw please explain to me, or point me ro a resource that does, what exactly qualifies as fanart and where is the line between re-imagining an existing story and FA? I am very confused about that...
Thank you so much this was a great video! When you’re coming up with poses for your character design, are you drawing these all from imagination or is it alright to use models for reference when developing poses? Thanks!
Is an Instagram account an acceptable portfolio if you create a separate account just for your best work? I have an art account, but it would be really convenient if I could just have a separate account just for best work that I can show people
I loved this video. I was revamping my portfolio by redoing an old show I loved (fanart 🥲🥲🥲) so I’m gonna go with something else now. Glad I saw your video when I did. Such great tips. I’ve never had a good portfolio, but now I think I’m on my way to a better one at least ☺️
What's good about Jackie's chanel is that I now know THAT MUCH about portfolios even tho I'm 14 💀
Мне 15 и я поступаю с колледж, и это видео мне ой как нужно😅

God I needed this! I've just finished my degree in animation and am wanting to be a character designer so this is so helpful. Thanks for sharing!
Do you also need an art portfolio to get into an art college?
@@danztheman2763 some yes, some no
usually yes, but it's not as strict as a portfolio to get a job@@danztheman2763
@@danztheman2763yes it’s pretty obvious, some colleges won’t ask but mainly yes.

Probably the most helpful character design video I’ve seen so far.
Thank you so much for posting this! I’m applying for a character design internship and I have so much anxiety because I’m not sure what they might be looking for (if they want something that fits more of their style or if they want to see something unique) but this has helped a ton!

Hi. I am a versatile artist having skills in character design, backgrounds and graphics.

who is willing to get hired for any job?
So in the porfolio you can put anything? It doesn't need to be in any order?
hey, im 16 and just got into digital art can you tell me some tips on drawing backgrounds?
do you think I could organize this by project? like there’s a button for every project I want to show?

Hello, very good information. Could somebody tell me what is “turnaraunds” ?
-
Turn arounds are basically sheets that show, well, the character turned around. Front, back, side, sometimes 3/4 views
You are amazing and beautiful
And also would you say our portfolio needs to be “complete” in order to create a website. Or can we create a website with the pieces we have?
I like this video but had to turn it off around the 14 min mark because that awful screeching sound the background. Thought I should share incase I'm not the only one
I personally don't hear anything 🤷♀️
Would Behance also be good instead of a website?
I do storyboards and illustrations and a little bit of comic so my portfolio should be just that?
Can someonw please explain to me, or point me ro a resource that does, what exactly qualifies as fanart and where is the line between re-imagining an existing story and FA? I am very confused about that...
Do you think I can use references while preparing a portfolio because it is very bad when I draw without any references?
Thank you so much this was a great video! When you’re coming up with poses for your character design, are you drawing these all from imagination or is it alright to use models for reference when developing poses? Thanks!
Can i ask you a question? Is this character illustration? Or just character design?
Is an Instagram account an acceptable portfolio if you create a separate account just for your best work?
I have an art account, but it would be really convenient if I could just have a separate account just for best work that I can show people
Someone here could explain to me what exactly is the position, or basically what is it to be a visual development? its the same as concept artist?
What did you study?
u lost me when u said tumbler :(
