I love the way you give feedback it’s so lighthearted yet firm but also wholesome and sweet! It’s a bit different then other popular feedback artist on yt. more down to earth and less for comedy and entertainment! New fav youtube artist
real. like a lot of them just turn the art they "review" into their own style and call it a day as opposed to Jackie working with whatever style and coherently building on it
I think it would be cool if you did update videos from the previous portfolios you critiqued. See what they did differently on their portfolio since you provided that feedback.
these are very informative thank you! oh but the fairy in the nutcracker is called the sugarplum fairy, and i think that's why her design wasn't leaning much into flowers. the bottom-skirt part really looks like a sugarplum!
There are some versions that show her as a flower (San Francisco’s yearly production has this motif instead) but I agree that it needs to pick either or in this case. It could maybe be both if it were a sugary flower! 🤔
If anyone asks me “how do you stay or get motivated?” I’m just going to send them your videos/this series. Your advice is so genuinely motivating for me, and whenever I’m about to sit down and do some character art, vis dev, practice, etc. I’ve found putting on one of your videos before and during really helps me remember what I need to prioritise . Thank you for your videos!! 🤩✨
Except sugarplums aren't actual tree plums. Plum was the generic word for dried fruit (usually raisins) and a sugarplum was just a little, rounded candy made the size of a plum (dried fruit). So it was in the sense of plum being a sweet thing, and sugarplums being sweet things made out of sugar (modern day: candy or sweet). It could refer to candied nuts like almonds as well, and more recently refers to chewier balls of dried fruit and nuts that are rolled in sugar, but that wasn't the original form. So really, the character design shouldn't be based on the fruit we call plums, which we used to call prunes (yes, even in the fresh form).
not to be that person, but in the original story of E.T.A. Hoffmann, there's no mention of a fairy at all (but a princess), and in the Russian ballet the character is called candy fairy, in german also sugar fairy and in japanese also a variant of candy fairy (other languages, idk). According to Wikipedia, "sugar plum" as well is a candy dragee, not a fruit plum 🤐
I gotta be real with you, Valeria's portfolio made me want to create my own designs to one of my country's legends but I don't think I'm good enough for a task But we'll see, maybe I'll do it anyway
this is extraordinarily captivating for my adhd brain, the way you explain and make your points really helps me to focus. I'm not always good at retaining information, but thanks to you ive actually learned quite a lot about portfolio creation and formatting, as well as character design and variation. In short terms, awesome video, and thank you!!
Omg i just found your account and I love it! Ive been trying to get inspired and back to art but your comments are really motivating! And this person’s portfolio is beautiful
It's so good to see a lot of portfolios being discussed! Cuz there's no one right way to do it, and one video would totally not be enough to grasp it. Thank you for your videos!! ❤
I love the amount of getting into character, even if it involves lil doodle sketches or doing silly voices. That alone helps me understand the kind of work that goes into character design.
21:40 another thing is with the seven dwarf re-designs, off the bat you can’t tell which is supposed to be which dwarf, so with the exaggeration it should be an exaggeration on their personality/name. Like we should see sneezy sneezing for example
9:38 i love how when you said the characters doing something sexy, i immediately had the same thought of the claw under the chin. it’s a cliche (i think so anyway) but i am a sucker for those types of things 🤭
Lovely video as always, but I am curious. In the other portfolio reviews you always say to avoid fanart, which makes complete sense, but what makes works that design for already established stories like the Nutcracker different? Are they not both fanart at the end of the day?
She's addressed that, I don't remember where. Basically if you design characters for a preexisting story it should be a story in a different medium, like a book, not a story with pre-made character designs. The Nutcracker was originally a short story, so it's fair game to make your own original character designs for (as long as they're not just derived from the San Francisco Ballet version or something). Fanart that should stay on your personal tab would be something like drawings of Sonic the Hedgehog, i.e. characters designed by somebody else. Bottom line, if you didn't create the character design, you shouldn't use it for a professional portfolio.
hey heyy, i'm an art student from germany and i've been really enjoying your videos in general. I'm having a course this semester regarding portfolio design so i was lookin into supporting you on patreon but i was wondering how many you get to review and how long the queue is to get your portfolio rated?
These reviews make me wish I didn’t quit film 😂 but at the same time I think I’d be better off as an illustrator for books at most. I mostly just design business cards and paint lol
hey question, where would I be able to get good references of peoples character turnarounds I am currently working on one myself and am trying to find some, if anyone could help it would be appreciated
i just watched 3 of your videos back to back and one thing about you, you're always gonna want the angry character to be grabbing another character by their shirt 😭😭😭 BAAHAHAHAH
heyy is it possible for you to make a video bout how to make a proper portfolio without and blunders...idk how to explain my adhd ass cannot- like a portfolio which you think is well done w/out any mistakes :D
what you said about a bunch of rats in the cloak made me realize: wouldn't it be messed up if the Rat King was a rat king? (if you don't know what a rat king is, i am not liable for any trauma received from looking it up)
at 10:02 see at the bottom, IDK if Jackie opt that out intentionally or what but it seems very much gay so where all this wife context coming from. Well its whateva I guess

BOTH OF THE ART PORTFOLIOS HAVE SM POTENTIAL!!! especially Tarek! 🤩
The first one was SO GORGEOUS!! OMG I LOVE IT SO MUCH
My fav series
I gotta be real with you, Valeria's portfolio made me want to create my own designs to one of my country's legends but I don't think I'm good enough for a task
But we'll see, maybe I'll do it anyway
You should go for it!
do it!!!
- I'm new to you but seeing the thumbnails really sparks me some light about your arts

Valeria's art is so beautiful i hope she gets some social media accounts started so i can support 😢
your advice is really good you can tell whats going on just by listening
I was literally in the middle of making a portfolio when you uploaded this
It's so good to see a lot of portfolios being discussed! Cuz there's no one right way to do it, and one video would totally not be enough to grasp it. Thank you for your videos!! ❤
The outfits at 22:26 are so unique an interesting. I am already interested in whatever this would be haha Like I want those puffer pants for myself!
Can you do a video on ctitiquing actual shows' chatacter roatations and other art from them?
love the portfolio reviews Jackie!! thank you
for your time.
I love how you actually give good criticism! There’s a lot of people who instead of giving helpful feedback they are just straight up rude!😭
I love the amount of getting into character, even if it involves lil doodle sketches or doing silly voices. That alone helps me understand the kind of work that goes into character design.
how can a video be both so inspiring and deflating at the same time.
I love how constructive you are this is so awesome for inspo
21:40 another thing is with the seven dwarf re-designs, off the bat you can’t tell which is supposed to be which dwarf, so with the exaggeration it should be an exaggeration on their personality/name. Like we should see sneezy sneezing for example
This review helped me very much to look at my own work differently. The turnaround review gave me goals to work on. Thanks for the channel.

1:58 i was skipping though the sponsor with the 10 second button and i was like wait wait wait hold up 😂
9:38 i love how when you said the characters doing something sexy, i immediately had the same thought of the claw under the chin. it’s a cliche (i think so anyway) but i am a sucker for those types of things 🤭

The little hobie holding your mic 😭😭😭
Thanks for sharing, Jackie.

@ruththompson7816 Ah that makes sense. Thank you very much!
@@xerox1084 You got it!
How do you feel about including sonas in a portfolio?? Maybe a spidersona, your star wars oc, or a hogwarts oc??
This was very helpful. Thanks!
1:32 "it's not your fault that your old.. or a man" gurl 😂😂😂
That rat king is kinda...
hey heyy, i'm an art student from germany and i've been really enjoying your videos in general.

I just opened two new spots on my patreon for portfolio critiques! They usually fill up quickly. I send back reviews within two weeks of getting them
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS !!! ❤❤❤❤
golden channel
Why are u so uniquely pretty
0:13 she posted 🎉
These reviews make me wish I didn’t quit film 😂 but at the same time I think I’d be better off as an illustrator for books at most. I mostly just design business cards and paint lol
pls do more of these videos!!
This video is so helpful! And I have no interest in ever becoming a character designer or animator teehee
hey question, where would I be able to get good references of peoples character turnarounds I am currently working on one myself and am trying to find some, if anyone could help it would be appreciated
I wish I would have your knowledge and skill 😅🥰
Honestly, as a ballerina familiar with the Nutcracker, I do feel like Clara needs a lighter outfit since she's such a young and naive character
clicked so fast omg
i just watched 3 of your videos back to back and one thing about you, you're always gonna want the angry character to be grabbing another character by their shirt 😭😭😭 BAAHAHAHAH
I love these videos
Is Sketchbook Pro a good app to make portfolio because I’m thinking about making digital art on that and put my work on Tumblr
Domestika seems cool :)
heyy
is it possible for you to make a video bout how to make a proper portfolio without and blunders...idk how to explain my adhd ass cannot-
like a portfolio which you think is well done w/out any mistakes :D
@mira5283 omg thanks!
What kind of art program do you use on a computer because I’ve been struggling on finding one and I really want to get into digital art
For the first one i think the values are a bit weak.
what you said about a bunch of rats in the cloak made me realize: wouldn't it be messed up if the Rat King was a rat king? (if you don't know what a rat king is, i am not liable for any trauma received from looking it up)
at 10:02 see at the bottom, IDK if Jackie opt that out intentionally or what but it seems very much gay so where all this wife context coming from. Well its whateva I guess
for showing a story that i have in mind with characters how would I do so? would it be showing more interactions of character dynamics?
no one does it like you!
Is it bad that I mainly use artstation for my portfolio?👀
i love the way you commentate but the one thing that killed me is thats a sugarplum fairy !!!!!! the skirt is not a flower !!!!!!
jackie? i have a question!!
Where can I find your portfolio?
so make it more dramatic ?? Exaggerated
-) meaning that .. the viewer should get the idea of the character with just looking at the design . Well thats what I got from this video .
-) the story should be clear from the scene alone
-) all more emotions if in action . anger (in action), humour etc.
-) add more variety . sooner the better
Well that is what I picked up
well of course this will not be 100% acurate as she is professional and I am not into college but for some notes this is alright for now
i did copied it and put this in a folder with some more notes I made from different videos
I swear everyone has the sad clown boy from Pinterest (me included)
Ur hair is soooo cyuute
1:28 SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY
Very Nice
🤍🧡💚🤍
I would love to know what tool you use for digital art
why do these people not use artstation?
This is a bit hard to answer but... if ur an illustrator u don't necessarily need to use it for ur portfolio vs if ur a 3d artist
2 minutes ago is crazzzy
❤❤❤
