Very cool. I like seeing all the vintage cooking gear. I liked that coffee bean grinder too!!! Your Dad made his lunch “complete” with Texas Pete!!! 👍🏻

John, great video sir. I totally get a kick out of all the vintage stuff you used on your trip. I never thought about using the US mess kit in the Coleman oven to make cornbread. I can't wait to try that on my next trip. BTW enjoyed the garden tour. i hope to see your next video really soon. You are appreciated.

Fun video. I have a Polish mess kit and canteen, the kit is 1959 and the canteen the tens digit is hard to read, it looks like a 0 but that would make it 1907 which doesn’t seen right so I’m guessing 1987.
Listening to the stove fire up brings back memories and makes me want to fire up my old Coleman. I’ve been using propane for quite awhile.

WP means Polish Army, and 88 is a year of production. Lefana is a company who made it. There was some days I was using those staff. "Niezbędnik", "menażka", "manierka" and "chlebak".

Nice to see a mess kit video again. 👍 I acquired a quite a few items from watching your videos like that Polish bread bag, mess kit, and canteen. Now I need to get a Coleman oven. I used to have one many moons 🌙 ago.

Wow that cornbread turned out great. Goes great with beans with a bit of oink meat. I like to put ham hocks into mine. Yummy nummy camp meal. Ooh and fresh coffee ☕️ 😍 my granny always used a perkilator to make her black coffee

Good morning, John. Yesterday I was looking at the Polish bread bag on Amazon, do you like it? I think I’ll try the spam black eyed peas in my Soviet mess kit. Cool to see you use the refurbished Coleman. How awesome that you were able to cook the cornbread in the oven on the stove, nice. 👍

Thank you very much! The Polish bread bag is good. It has its own strengths. I like that it will carry a German style mess kit in the main compartment and all the little pockets for organization. But the one thing my particular bag lacks is water resistance (not sure if all Polish bread bags are the same). I can see daylight through the fabric of my bag and the flap barely covers the bag. For outings in Florida where rain showers can pop up at anytime, this is not best for me. But on a dry day, it’s great.
I carry 90% of the time a Czech bread bag made of heavy canvas. It has a rain resistant material and a flap that covers very well. It doesn’t have room inside to carry a German style mess kit but it has nice pockets to organize small stuff(ferro rod, light gloves, food seasoning, silverware, etc) and a large compartment that I carry a back up Esbit stove, bug repellant, fire starters head lamp, and a bit more. On the outside of the flap, it has some webbing that I sometimes attach a US or UK Osprey type canteen cup system using the flap webbing.
The other bag I favor is the Finnish gas mask bag because it’s made of heavy canvas, the flap covers the bag well, and it can hold a lot of stuff. I use it a lot when I plan to hike to a remote lake or river to fish. It holds a lot of fishing stuff, my lunch, and electronics.
I use all of my “haversack” bag setups with a back pack of some sort to carry other items. I might have to make a video on this!
Thanks for your comment and for watching another of my videos!

Czech M85 bread bag is much better than our Polish bread bag. It has two flaps that fit Polish / German mess kit handle. Just pull the flap through the handle. I always hang mess kit outside since it is very light. The other flap is for attaching a 13'' hatchet. I use a piece of paracord for that. I also always attach plash palatka and rain coat to the bottom of M85 bread bag. US canteen set inside the bag. This is my favourite "backpack". I use Czech M85 suspenders. Much wider than German suspenders

Hey John! Nice set up. I've got a very similar Coleman that runs like a charm. Last week I picked up and old stove for $5. I had no clue what it was. Turns out it's a Turner Brass Co. Made in the 30s. Very little info on the web about them. But I got it running with a bit of TLC. Kind of surprised, for me anyways, just how much chatter was on the radio. They have always kinda intrigued me.
I have that same oven too, but I have never used it. I have picked up a couple of small bread basket warmers. I want to use them in the oven for some thermal mass to help retain so heat. I'll see ya on your next one.

Hello Chris. Glad you stopped by. Sounds like a cool stove you have there. I enjoy restoring the old ones and taking them camping. I usually get some good conversation from folks camping near me. You will probably experience the same thing.
My next stove project is a original Coleman 425 (no letter) made between 1948 and 1953 for my brother. He found it in a old leaky shed he was demolishing. I hope to start that soon. After that will be a 413E stove made between 1954 and 1961 that my dad gave me.

Great stuff John, thank you. I picked up a Swiss mess kit recently from Varusteleka, really excellent and highly recommended. A little bigger than the Polish or German mess kits, but the quality of the Swiss kits is the best one I have seen (other than the Swedish kit).

    • @ryanvictoria6206
      @ryanvictoria6206 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Swiss stuff is always bulit to last a lifetime and then some. Just like their watches and SAKs. 🇨🇭 👌

The Swiss kit is one I haven’t collected yet. But my purchasing has slowed down. I’m not sure if I will ever buy one. I do enjoy my aluminum Swedish set. It’s built like a tank!
