    Apologies if I wasn’t clear…the problem I’m referring to in the title is that I think some watch enthusiasts will not want this watch as it uses technology to achieve accuracy instead of mechanical engineering…If it contained a 9000 series automatic or a super high accuracy Quartz movement, collectors would be all over it….

      People like their old cuckoo clocks on their wrists still and will pay. I've given up on the Swiss automatic journey. I was fed up with babysitting a watch, the cost of services, over-hyped brands and just wearing something that's value said more about my ego than telling the time. I'm done with all that now and I am more than happy with my Skyhawk JY8108-53E titanium, as it does an incredible amount of things and requires zero babysitting and zero services and costs. So people can keep their cuckoo clocks, I just want a watch that looks after itself now

    I don't agree with the idea that it would be better with an automatic movement. Maybe that would appeal to some watch nerds, but the Eco-Drive movement is a real gem, a true set-it-and-forget-it watch that is always powered, always correctly set and always ready. It's for everyone who wants a nice looking, well-specced watch that never requires fiddling, it just does everything you actually need in a watch, with no drama.

      Agree but £600 for a posh eco drive? There’s a lot of profit in that. Lovely watch but I have other titanium watches with accurate movements for less than half the cost. I opened my first small business right as the 2008 crisis got going. Bar and music venue. It was miserable for a few years and I saw a lot of my contemporaries crash and burn. We finally started to turn a profit around year 5 and when I could finally take a small breath of fresh air I decided that it was finally time to buy my first watch because, you know, that's what successful people do.
    I spent weeks looking for watches and went with a citizen eco-drive titanium cocktail watch. I could not believe I was considering spending $200 on a watch but times were good and it was on sale. I got the full boutique experience at Belk in my local Mall and Amanda was nice enough to resize the bracelet for me before I left the Belk Boutique.
    I still have that watch 10 years later. It has never once stopped running, ever, and was the reason I am crazy about watches now. I love Citizen.

    I wore a Citizen "Atomic Time" watch for years. (Obviously, it's not atomic, but it refers to the time towers in the US which are kept by atomic clocks).
    But at least in MY watch, the synching to the towers took place once a day at 2AM, and pressing the button to check indicates whether or not it got a synch during the last attempt.....not that it was currently connected. (The Rx indicator shows when it is currently receiving, which could also be manually initiated). I usually got a fresh synch about 90% of nights.
    Anyway, Solar + Atomic Time = a completely hands off watch! When I was a much busier man, I appreciated that....

It's an EcoDrive and remains very accurate and stays charged by just leaving it on my desk under room lighting. I was very impressed by the quality, features, and finishing, and particularly the look and feel of titanium (all my watches are stainless steel, so the grayish color of the titanium is a nice change). And with reduced weight, it's very comfortable to wear. I just bought a Seiko Select (JDM) Solar watch, pretty much the same size as the Citizen, but it feels like twice the weight. I do think that Citizen is really stepping up their styling and finishing and are becoming a real competitor to Seiko.

    Gary the closest radio tower you can use is in Germany, possibly just at the range where it becomes unreliable for you in the UK. There are only 5 of those towers worldwide, 2 in Japan, 1 in China, Germany and Colorado 1 each. The function is really neat but I really wish there were more of them and the entire Southern hemisphere has no access at all. The watches are really popular in Japan obviously, having 2 towers.
    On titanium, I happen to like titanium, it can be worked and finished to not have that typical grey sheen and with modern surface treatments can be more scratch resistant than 316. I don't get your comment that the watch doesn't feel premium solely because it is lighter then steel. It think that's rubbish but to each his own I suppose.

    It's actually great that it connects to multiband towers. All in all I think it's an awesome watch. All those features are cool.

  • @hillogical
    @hillogical ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So the reason you're not getting signal is because of solar interference (ironically enough). I think your tower is in Germany, so you'll get great reception around midnight. I have an AT Citizen and it's my most complimented watch. I actually recommend Citizen as people's first watch over everything else because of what you get for the money.

  • @nickbernstein
    @nickbernstein ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You are almost certainly misunderstanding the "connect to towers" - the Universal Coordinated Time frequencies are AM/Medium Wave radio broadcasts. The watch receives them. It does not transmit, that would take way too much power. You can actually listen to the clock "ticking" with a shortwave radio or web SDR.

    • @ILikeWatches2
      @ILikeWatches2  ปีที่แล้ว

      So the watch doesn’t use the signal to adjust itself to the correct local time?

    • @nickbernstein
      @nickbernstein ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ILikeWatches2 it does, but it receives it; there is no outgoing connection. It's no more technically advanced than quartz. The first radio controlled clock came out in the early 80s. When you turn the radio on to listen to BBC 4, you aren't connecting to bbc4's tower, you're just receiving the signal. Same thing. If you synced your watch when the announcer said the time at the top of the hour manually, you'd be doing the same thing, essentially.

  • @kevinfestner6126
    @kevinfestner6126 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Since I got my first citizen, a citizen quartz in the early 80s, I have been a fan. I still have my CQ, and it works! I just bought a used citizen field watch, and it's gorgeous. I have my eye on their tsuno chrono panda, this in lieu of the seiko speedtimer panda. Both are quartz. Citizen is an overlooked brand competing against Casio and Seiko - Orient.
    Is citizen trying to morph into a kinda, sorta hi tech luxury brand or will Frederique Constant be their luxury brand?
    Btw, I still own my early 80s Casio TC 500 touch screen calculator watch. And, ya guess it, it still works. It is in excellent shape.

    For someone who bought this watch and loves it, you have a lot of complaints about it.
    The dial moves to “no” because the last time it attempted to connect to a radio tower failed to receive the time, weak signal. A demo of this near a window wouldn’t have gone amiss. It doesn’t have a constant connection to a radio tower since that would drain the battery, generally these kind of watches attempt to connect on a daily basis, another reason (as well as charging) to give it a home by a window.

And for about half the price of this Citizen.

    Standard Citizen quartz by itself is, in my experience, pretty accurate. The radio should add a perpetual date function and auto adjustment of time zone, so long as you get the signal. So, no good in Australia.
    Of course if you want a high accuracy quartz movent which is independent of the radio signal, get hold of a Calibre 0100 movement.

  • @awlonghurst
    @awlonghurst ปีที่แล้ว

    Why would it be better with a Miyota mechanical calibre? This does exactly what a watch is intended to do, it tells time pretty much perfectly. The time will always be right (assuming you can access the time signal once in a while), it's more shock resistant than a mechanical movement, it'll need opening up maybe once in 20+years time compared to the servicing a mechanical movement will need. It doesn't even need a battery or setting once set. Pretty much wear and enjoy. HAQ watches are nice but they have their issues and most (except Citizen's own ones) need battery changes and maybe even regulating every so often.
    I have, what could be described as the cheap and cheerful Casio version of this watch - a Casio Lineage LCW-M100TS (also JDM only) and it's been superb. I'm tempted to go for a Citizen ATTESA now as well for the improved water resistance and better bracelet.

    In many cases these "JDM" models are exported to certain markets. We get some "JDM" models here in Australia because the local company/agent/distributor has decided they want to bring it in. But then again there are some that never leave Japanese shores unless they are on the wrist (or in the watch roll) of an end customer

    I really like the top-of-the-line JDM watches. I own a Casio Oceanus, 2 Citizen Attesas, and have ordered a Seiko Astron. FYI, the reason for the 2 prices may be that one price is with tax when sold in Japan and one without tax when being sent outside Japan. I seem to recall seeing the 2 prices on Casio's Japanese website.

    It is a beautiful watch. It is funny how much the marketing of certain things about watches have affected the perception of quality. Weight has nothing to do with quality but it now is a false marker that something is well made, same with stiff, thick and heavy metal bracelets with screwed construction are seen as much better quality but those things from a technical and user comfort point are not actually good things for long term comfort. You want a thinner bracelet and one that has a bit of movement in it for increased comfort, likewise the fashion for thick heavy clasps decreases comfort.
    Your wrist is not a stiff unyielding thing, it moves all the time and a light weight thinner bracelet with a thinner clasp and with a bit of movement in the links actually is exactly the recipe for long term comfort. Try bracelets that were made 50 years ago, they still perform beautifully and remain so comfortable. As for screws, well, they are only useful once, when the bracelet is adjusted. Over time they work loose so must be looked at at least once a year to tighten or use a thread lock. A friction set up simply will never come loose and is a far better method long term.
    As for the movement. I never understand why someone would prefer a fairly cheap mechanical movement at this price point over an accurate quartz that is powered by light. There is nothing romantic about these cheaper auto movements. They are all made by machine with very little human input just like the quartz and when it comes to service time. After ten years a capacitor change will cost you about €50 where as a mechanical service on a cheap movement is going to be almost half the cost of the watch and will need to be done twice in that ten year lifespan so will actually cost the same as the watch in the firs place!
    Anything below High Horology level is pretty basic in no complex watches and under a thousand give me an eco drive any time.

    The reason citizen & Seiko & Casio & orient stick to the English & romance language alphabet even on jdm models is because they used these logos & names since the beginning for marketing purposes because it would probably not sell well in the west using Japanese characters. The Seiko and others name in "English" is just more recognized even in Japan, so that's why the dials are in "English" . I mean, Seiko & Casio are Japanese words just written in English. As for the online manual, I'm sure they know the models will trickle out to other countries. But the logos on the dials have always been in our alphabet for marketing. Same reason most Chinese brands put weird English logos on their watches but they're not nearly as good at it.
